NPD Sales Results for January 2016

I never knew they had two teams doing that. That's pretty rad.

They pulled together just about every R* studio from all over the world to complete GTAV. It had something like 1000 people working on it at one point.

GTA6 is obviously coming, but what I really want as well is a Bully sequel from R* Vancouver.

This is like a weird Twilight Zone episode. Grown men that care too much about a box and multinational corporations that don't really care about them unless they are getting some sort of money in return.

I think Dark Souls 3 switched over to Sony. Though I don't think either are pushing it too hard, so it could just be Namco doing the marketing.

I think it was always Sony, they just played nice with MS and had their trailer at their E3.

Then the Beta ("Stress test")was on PS4, and the recent international trailer shows the PS4 box ahead (which is generally a dead giveaway to who has the Marketing if any).

Not me who said it but I kind of expected higher. Judging by the prediction thread most did. It's up there with some of the worst months ever It's even worse when you realize we're talking about $499 for some of these numbers. That's if the rumour of worst Jan is true.

1) 77,000 (May 2014)
2) 115,000 ( April 2014)
3) 131,000 (July 2014)
4) 139,000 (May 2015)
5) 141,000 (Jan 2014)
6) 150,000 (Jan 2015)
7) 160,000 (Aug 2014)
8) 168,000 (Oct 2014)
9) 187,000 (Apr 2015)
10) 189,000 (Jul 2015)

Don't get me wrong, I expected better too (i.e.: higher than January 2015) but the difference between that and how the Xbox One actually did could possibly only be 50K or so which isn't very much.

Microsoft's bundling strategy has been puzzling to say the least. They need a permanent $299 Halo 5 or Gears of War bundle and they will move units in the US to rival the PS4. It's fine that they're doing 1 TB $399 bundles of $350 bundles with numerous games but there needs to be a base bundle at $299 preferably with Halo 5.

It's not doom and gloom like many in this thread are saying but consumers saw $250-300 bundles during the holidays and now it's back up to $350 in January. Consumers know a price drop is inevitable so they'll wait.

Yo. Next person that quotes that tweet is going to get smacked. It's not relevant to the discussion here.

MS weren't selling better than Sony at $50 cheaper so being the same price is just a horrible position for them. There has to be a price drop in March to coincide with The Division. Waiting any longer and it'll be a blood bath this first Q1 and 2.

Xbox's sales are really that bad?

Or just because PS4's are so much better, making xbox looks bad.

I think earlier in the prediction thread, Cosmicqueso already hinted that it decreased YOY. He suggested that everything actually decreased YOY (actually I should say everything came in below the aggregate predictions, which also I think end up being a decrease YOY?) except PS4.

Is this the earliest instance of a YoY decrease in sales for a console into its generation? Excluding handhelds I guess.

Kagari, just a suggestion if you don't mind, if people see it at page 1, they are going to quote it and not going to see your warning here in middle of nowhere given the usual pace of NPDs threads. Maybe it would be better if Nirolak puts a warning in the initial page to say that enough is enough.

No, but that's -1 sale for people who has a capable PC. Also you don't need a 980ti to play it, lol.

980ti is included in the recommended specs for Quantum Break PC. I think there's a lot less overlap than people seem to think. Sure, they might lose the occasional console sale, but how many software sales are they getting now that the game is releasing on another platform? Think of that and then ask yourself why consoles exist in the first place.

Hardware revenue being down 15% is not a great look but Nov./Dec. were good in the US and the PS4 is up YOY after a disappointing January 2015. I do wish hardware was up though, it likely won't be next month with the N3DSXL buoyed by the #1 game that month, Majora's Mask 3D. 3DS won't have that this year.

If the 15% is mostly the PS4/XB1 price cuts then XB1 and Wii U might not be doing much worse than last year at all, will wait for numbers.

These boxes are all about the software after all and some of you are going digital which affects NPD a bit.

Maybe Xbox will give a price cut like at e3?

IMO they should announce a permanent $299 Halo 5/Gears:UE bundle sometime in March and then save E3 for a potential slim model.

Or maybe they're waiting to do both at the same time at E3.

Either way they're doing fine in the U.S. in terms of units moved (close to PS4) so maybe they can afford to wait a few months till E3.

So the gap this month will be above $60k or so?

Edit: oh, I might be super wrong, even more than that?!?

GTA is a cultural phenomenon. It can't really be compared to most other games.

Also, like Minecraft, it has a massive presence on YouTube that's keeping it on peoples minds.
