Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Quick question for you all: I've just picked up an arcade stick and was wondering, are octo gates usually used in shmup arcade machines? Using a square gate doesn't really feel quite right compared to how I remember them feeling.

Japanese machines most commonly use square gates, I'd assume shooting games are no different.

As said, US arcades often use circular gates. I prefer square ones now after a brief time adjusting.

Octo gate is what I use for shooters, square for fighters - No idea if that's the standard for the genres, but I always assumed it was.

I actually have both a square and octagonal gate populated on p1 & p2 and switch between the two from time to time. square on the p2 since it's my preference and there's some games like ibara where I prefer using the p2 ship.

just go with what you like imo

After having a look, the joystick I want (Seimitsu LS-40-01, which has a short throw) comes with a multi-gate template, which from memory includes an octo and round gate. So I'm good either way :)

Now I just have to find one in Australia... they're damn-near impossible!

Good choice. My favorite unmodified stick for shmups.

Oh and they don't come with an octo gate. The restrictor that is attached to the bottom of the stick can be moved over to lock the stick to 4-way for games that only require 4 directions, like Pacman.

Ah. I couldn't quite make out nor find what comes with that gate. So it's 4-way or square then?

And it's all ordered, too. Couldn't find one in AU so had to get it from Akishop, but their shipping and prices were quite reasonable... $55AU for the joystick, 8x 30mm buttons and a single 24mm button.

Oh man that sounds awesome. Too bad none of the stores in Houston doing anything like that. At least I don't think they do

You might want to recommend it to them. If you think that you could get a group going there let them know and they might be open to the idea. Myself and my manager really love shmups so we knew we had to have an event to let people play them.

Just 1cced Zanac Neo for the first time. Score of 10 943 620. My chaining was really garbage but I finally understand some of the underlying mechanics that were inhibiting my survival before.

I actually think this game is horribly underrated. More than almost any other shooter I've played, it's just fun to go through. And the last level is a total clusterfuck of awesome. Strongly recommended.

Yep, square only. Just take the two screws out of the restrictor and toss it. If you happen to ride the gate, you'll feel it.

Speaking of Akishop. I need to order some push buttons to replace the HORIs in my Kai.

Still can't bring myself to buy Darius Burst for some reason. There's just something so bland about it. It was a neat experience playing it in arcades though.

I thought it could be picked up for cheap now?

I think each ship is like 5 bucks and you get a 3 pack for 12. I'm down for that. I need Rayforce in my game.
Still hovering around $40 on Steam with sales. I think $20 is my sweet spot. I don't really care which platform.

Edit: Holy shit, I just noticed that NightStriker is one of the DLC ships. Oh man....

If you have a PS2 it's also on Taito Legends 2, along with Rayforce, Darius Gaiden, and otherwise expensive games like Gekirindan and Elevator Action Returns.

IIRC there's a bug in Metal Black for Taito Legends 2 that affects the charge beam. The game is still mostly playable, but it's an annoying oversight.

Still a great compilation.

edit: Haha @ the Metal Black Darius Burst video. I was wondering why the player was crazily moving around during the Mud Wheel fight, and then I saw the trophy pop. Did the player really fight that boss for the first time?

I really wish DARIUSBURST came with some sort of model viewer for all the ships in the game. There's one on the mobile phone port. Seems weird not to include it in this game.

Not really a traditional shoot em' up, but I noticed Project Root going for $4 on US PSN. Impressions? It looks like an oldskool open world shooter from the PS1 era.

Just reached stage 6 in R-Type for the first time and aaahahahah, the game's reputation as a "memorizer" has never been more clear. This is insane!

Man, I have to say Mushihime looks better on PC than in the original Arcade, that extra resolution helps a ton.

Anybody in here 1CC R-Type? Arcade version.

Dying on stage 5 is brutal and I'm trying to figure out the best way of dealing with it. Deaths in Stage 4 are bad too, but I can sometimes pull out of those.

I did on the Xbox 360 version years ago, it was on the of the achievements. Must of spent all day doing that last achievement :(
