Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

why is everyone butthurt?

seems like it will just open up better graphics for games. doesn't mean games won't work on your current ps4...

People are afraid that the game will not get optimized for PS4 [run worse than they are now].

Personally, I am not bothered by that. Devs will know that they have to serve the large userbase with good content, and that PS4K will not sell as good if entire PlayStation brand get damaged.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this for now, but we definitely need to hear from Sony. There is no way that this thing is launching this year, so Sony will most likely start talking about this next year at the earliest. I believe PS4 will get minimum of 4 years of "solo" time on the market, with another 2 of additional support for all home console software. That is 6 year of prime support [with more years as a "last gen" legacy device support], which is fine for a console generation.

So we're gonna get two new Hardware reveals this E3.

IMO, this is not coming out soon, so there is no point for Sony to mention this. Who knows if this "upgraded ps4" is even a plan that will be accepted by Sony leadership. We only heard few hints from devs.

how do you know
I don't know for sure but it's my take on the story (sorry, I should have stated that). It's like what Sony did with the PS3 Slim (or Super Slim), it was a little bit more powerful than the regular version. And since the PSVR is going to come out at the end of the year and Zoetis says "end of the year" it clicked. The console will be more optimized to run the PSVR in my opinon.

I dont understand why it would benefit PSVR games but not regular games.

Not for PSVR games, just for the PSVR, to ease the processing. But that's just my guess.

WTF

Not sure what I think about this. I can't imagine this being anything but an early PS5. Certainly not some add on, that'd be suicide.

So if we keep the same OS and x86 framework can expect Uncharted 4's "remaster" to just be a patch or mod with a texture pack and framerate upgrade?

Either way this is an interesting development.

If they do that, won't there be a lot of people who upgrade and dump their old PS4s? So much waste. :(

I'd prefer Sony to stick with the same system for 6+ years just to avoid all of the waste of frequent incremental upgrades. Ugh.

Not really. It's incremental upgrades, but of course some can if they choose too. The benefits of incremental upgrades is that you can jump in anytime and not worry of console generations. And if they're all on the same architecture, well, that will make backwards and forwards compatibility much smoother and easier.

Was it the Infinity ward stuff? Or was he the one to expose Konami?
Either way I trust Scoops Klepek
Edit: the XBox 180 stuff too

Infinity Ward drama at Activision and the XBox One-Eighty DRM story

Thanks everyone! I was trying to remember the Xbox One stuff.

the last big scoop was when this SJW got pushed out of giant bomb!!!!!!!

probably the xbox DRM stuff?

But games take stupidly long time to make.

So? What'll be the difference? So what if the developers now have to account for a higher end console? They have to do that for an insane amount of permutations for PC's right now if they're releasing the game there. So now they have to account for 2 or 3 hardware revisions for a console.

Honestly the more I think about it the more I'm on board with it.

I certainly wouldn't be okay with annual hardware upgrades (seriously who would?) but what if these upgrades came at a triennial basis? (once every three years).
It would be no different to buying the next iphone iteration or GPU upgrade for your PC, which certainly doesn't seem that bad.
Yea. If it was every 3-4 years. I'm better about it. Console gens used to be every 4-5 years.

Im all up for this. I have 3 PS4s in my house, as long as my kids can play the same games but at lower settings then its fine. Fuck buying another 3 each time but I really can not see them splitting the player base.

I have to laugh at the "Im going PC only posts"

like you dont really need to think about upgrading GPU around every 4 years to keep up with current releases there...

I had a PS4 and didn't think the exclusives + PS online subscription were worth it.
I had an Xbox and was disappointed by the system as well and didn't like the direction console games were going.

I looked at my PC and it did virtually everything the consoles did and better and with the push of MS getting their Xbox games onto PC and even some PS4 games like No Man's sky.

For me, focusing on PC and whatever Nintendo pushes out just makes perfect sense. This isn't me being PC elitist, it's just the way things are heading.

It's a big deal if true.
Why people would prefer that over PC?

I should sell my PS4 I guess and start saving for a Pascal/VIVE combo PC upgrade.

How much more powerful does a ps4 need to be to run games at 4K? I feel like it would need a complete redesign and will be $800 or something.

Someone earlier in the thread, but I forget where the post was...anyway, a good point was brought up that...this is kinda stupid in that, this decision seems to make sense to people because "it works for phones and tablets". The difference is, those have a much more massive market around the world. Game consoles on the other hand don't do those numbers quite as well, and all I can see it doing is alienating existing owners because they paid the same price(presumably) for an inferior version of the console a year prior.

No. It has been underwhelming. Saying otherwise is absurd, but you probably fall into the target for this PS4.5 thing.

So 2 years in going on three and your going to say it's been underwhelming? When it took Sony almost 3 years to fire on all cylinders for PS3, and at least 2 for xbox360.

By 2009 we had the big games that showcased why you bought a PS3. We now are getting shit tons of games this year, and next year that are in line when PS3 had their big titles.

WTF do you mean I fall in the target? WTF does that even mean, what kind of a bullshit comment is that?

The fact Patrick brought up that some developers sighed when they heard about it, other's were confused. Does that sound like something all Developers are excited for? When they finally have their engines, and skd's running how they should be for really good production? The amount of detail seen so far in 2015, and upcoming 2016 games shows dev finally have a handle on their tools.

So I disagree with Sony/MS coming out with something like this unless this is something of a more new console for next generation.

Console cycles exist for a reason. It helps temper expectations, helps people have some kind of perceived end date for life cycle. I really don't see the pro's outweighing the con's for developers, or the chip manufacturer's in the long run. Having set hardware to me helps put pressure on developers, pushes them to be more creative in different ways, if SOny/MS just start upgrading the consoles every couple years, that push will turn into complacency. Because of the awful hardware decisions Sony made, and coding issues with PS3 we got Last of us, puppeteer, Beyond 2 souls, among others that pushed what PS3 could do.

PS4 seems to be finally hitting it's stride development wise, and seeing how engines are getting better optimized, we are getting better quality games.

So no I disagree, and I feel your statement about me is unneeded.

It could be something really lame though. PS4 plus integration of the VR audio box and a some sort of high-end 1080p-to-4K scalar.

I just don't see how they can hit 4K on 14/16nm at a console price and power consumption point.

Unlike the launch model, I won't be picking this up for a while if true. Same with Xbox...my PC is looking much more attractive right now.
