How a Gaffer and his 3D printer trolled the world (2nd NX fake)

Do we have a collection of the journalists who claimed this was real? While we're at it we might as well do another list for those who confirmed its falsehood.

Like most people I thought the design was fake from the first image simply because Nintendo is in a bit of a hole and that kind of experimentation, which we know wouldn't be functional would likely be disastrous for the NX.

Yeah Nintendo would've had to have lost their goddamn mind to do something like that. I mean no buttons FOH.

I only followed the drama loosely over the past few days, but I can't stop laughing at the amount of thought and scrutiny everyone put into that damned tree.

I was fairly sure it was fake from the start (though my theory was that both supposed leaks came from the same source or from pranksters who were in cahoots), but there was just enough uncertainty introduced by the points in favour that people here were making that the concept of the design itself wasn't wholly out of the question, given Nintendo's typical battiness.

Amazing forgery, the best I remember. You have to wonder how much fun both of the pranksters had seeing their work get more traction and credibility than they ever could have expected.

One of the greatest fakes -- nay, pranks -- ever.

- copycated an existing fake to perfection
- choice of color
- 3D printed with real world photographs
- documented entire process
- double bluffed by casting doubt onto his OWN fake during initial frenzy
- classy good humored reveal
- to varying degrees altered the course of many hundreds of thousands of lives, pitiful, lonely lives nevertheless lol
- unveiled dodgy "insider" sources
- kept us entertained in this long E3/NX wait
- trees

Give this man GAF Gold and a tag of his choosing

I missed this! Let's have a link.

[Edit: Even better than I expected. In the original thread, kankki posts the source for his Confidential Property sticker, orchestrates a Finnish misdirection, and casts doubt on his own reluctance to photograph the back of the unit as he discusses in the video. It's well worth your while to revisit his posts on that thread.]

This !

And I was guessing the Rayman fake was the most work done on a fake since the Nintendo ON...

Somewhere there is a GAFer's 3D printer in mid-print, printing a 3rd fake that would have proved it could be done.

I salute you.

This was pretty great. I was fooled, I admit it. The best part was all the Nintendo marks trying to convince themselves and others the controller looked great.

I was in team real, and I don't regret it. It was a beautiful wild ride. The only thing I regret is calling Liam Robertson a liar, he wasn't in this case.

kankki, your troll is one of the greatest I have witnessed in my life. This is better than the fake Rayman leak for Smash 4.

I've honestly don't think I've ever been trolled as hard as I have before, and I'm glad that I was.

I give you all of my keks.

Holy shit man, you had GAF and the whole gaming community wrapped around your finger. You could have just kept it going as well by not saying anything.

You had people looking at google street view to find pictures of leafless winter trees and comparing branches.

This is GAF history in the making. I have been laughing out loud on multiple occations for the last hour.
What the, so the tree thing was not about that image with all Nintendo systems but a real tree hunt?

Or who despise Nintendo declaring it doomed.
Basically whoever has strong attachment to Nintendo in a way or another.

This is pretty funny. Are any of the publications commenting on their stories? It definitely looks bad on them...

kankki just shot himself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about GAF culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in GameFAQs where you can become successful by being a troll. If you screw someone over in GAF, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is a ban.

What this means is the forum public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to believe leakers for any system, nor will they buy any gaming journalist's claims. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but kankki has alienated an entire forum's readership with this move.

kankki, publicly apologize or you can kiss your membership goodbye.

The tree thing was so stupid to begin with since the reflection clearly showed a birch, and the ones outside of Massive's studio were not birches. Not to mention that reflection didn't match up with the height of those trees at all, since it'd have to be quite a bit taller than the level of the window. Even from the ground floor of Massive, that reflection wouldn't make any sense. But maybe most people / everyone was joking?

Wow, a tag! Hahah that's awesome. I was genuinely sort of expecting a ban :)

Thanks a lot for the kind words, too. Really loved making this thing too, not the kind of stuff I get to do a lot on regular work days.

Great work! And your English is basically flawless, with a very understandable accent.

And you're hot as, but let me not get too graphic if you're already...attached

Easily the best fake the industry has ever seen. NintendoON beats it for sheer effort involved, but this was far more convincing.

Congrats Kankki!
