Kojima: MGS Peace Walker is indeed MGS5

mehdi_san said:
So many wrong things said in this thread, it's sad... Everyone at kojima production is working on this game (the team is maybe even bigger than the one for MGS4), and it was said it will have more content than MGS4. Even the script is longer than the one for MGS4 if I remember correctly what was said at TGS. Finally, Kojima said himself that working on a less powerful system allowed him to focus more on innovations and new gameplays so it should really be very fun to play (and the demo confirmed that).
Anyway, about the OP, the news is old, but the logo pictures are not. Thanks for posting them.
this...excites you?

there was too much script in the last MGS game. and now here will be yet *more* than that one?

how discouraging.

why can't they do Snake Eater-like balance between gameplay and script/non-gameplay elements?

going by the demo i guess it'll mean longass cutscenes but nothing more

Seems like this makes sense purely as a marketing move. They are probably worried about low sales (relatively speaking), and by slapping a "5" on the box that is bound to generate more attention.

Yeah it's not like Kojima is doing it himself and all, like that Dragon Quest IX it's not really DQIX!

Handheld haters make me sad. :(

Although there are genres/franchises that are more suited to the mobile touch n go short burst playstyle than others, so I think someone could construct an argument against a "traditional" MGS title being on a handheld on that basis.

Me, I'm just hating on it because 4 was such a goddamn disappointment. I'm fucking done with story-heavy games written/directed by Kojima.

Has some serious potential to be my favorite PSP game of all time. I'm still playing on an OG PSP, would love to upgrade but is just worried Sony will announce a new, much better revision of the system soon.

They aren't slapping a 5 on the box. They are saying that the game is MGS5 but they can't number it because it's a psp game.

So no, if Peace Walker is really MGS5 they are making a bad marketing move by not putting the number on the box.

I freaking love the Metal Gear franchise, but I can honestly say I have little 'hype' interest in Peace Walker. And its mainly because of what platform its on.

Yes I will still buy it, yes I will still play it..... but I ain't sitting here going MAAAAAAAAN I CAN'T WAIT FOR PEACE WALKER TO COME OUT!!!! like I would usually be for a console MGS.

I've just never been a big fan of the PSP controls and feel.

I know what you mean and fully agree. I'm hoping they either port it to PS2 or make it a PSN game. That would be awesome. If it comes down to it I will have to get a PSP just for this, but I really don't want to.

So, MGS5 for the PSP.

Sounds..odd.

I own a PSP, but I still think that releasing a big sequel on a handheld is unappealing, to me..

Well you have the right to not be excited by that, but that wasn't really my point. I am sad at people denying this game the attention it deserves just because it's on the PSP, and that's why I brought the comparisons with MGS4 (the team size, the length of the script, etc...).
Now, about the your remark, we don't know yet if the game's balance will be closer to Snake eater like you're asking or close to MGS4. Even if the script is longer than MGS4, it has also been confirmed to have more content than it, so it should be more balanced.

The only reason I bought a PS3 was for MGS4 (when the MGS4 bundle came out) so don't tell me the cost of a PSP isn't worth it :p... I could buy 3 PSPs with the amount of money I spent on that PS3.

To all the people that hate Portable Ops: CHANGE THE CONTROLS!!!

I first hated it, then I made it Syphon Filter controls (move with left stick, aim with action buttons) and made R shoot and then it played very very smoothly. I totally changed my opinion after that.

wait ...what?

I know you could fully customize the controls scheme ...but didn't know to this extent. Shit I may need to rebuy MPO on PSN then and give it a shot!

thanks

Those controls are a lot better than the standard controls, but it still wasn't enough for me. :(

Yeah, mapping all those actions to the Dpad sounds pretty rough. Still curious though...

I know, but like someone said earlier. I simply cannot enjoy handheld games. Poor graphics, small screen, no 5.1, innovations focused on control rather than storytelling, atmosphere, AI, animation etc.
Agreed.

But control based innovations are the best kind of innovation. Probably one of the hardest things to improve upon too. When done right everyone else is left thinking why didn't I think of that, so simple.

Directly related, player movement is completely neglected these days too. Why is boosting no longer a feature in games. Such a simple way to add verticality to the world if the levels are designed correctly.

Kojima really needs to tell Konami he's making a new series or they can fuck off.

They can always come back to MGS in 10 years and it'll make money and feel like a new game.

Nuclear Muffin said:
It's not impossible to change; Castlevania, Mario and Metroid have all managed to ditch the numbering and there's never any doubt as to the legitimacy of their handheld instalments.
I'd disagree. The "Super Mario Land" titles aren't held in the same regard as the "Super Mario Bros." titles, and even DS's New Super Mario Bros. gets a lot of shit. Metroid kept a "II" when going portable, and continued to use III and IV in Super and Fusion, even if they didn't get put on the box.

Unlike the last 2 MGS games (MGS3/4), Kojima really wanted to make this one from the get-go, there hasn't been a single time he has said that he didn't want to work on it and so on

I really find that unlike, many of the best selling PSP games have not had a port, and not even the smaller MG (Ac!d/PO) games have had one.

Inanna said:
I don't think that Otacon codec call was there for that reason. I think it was just a nod to MGS on PSX, and how times have changed that now you don't need multiple disks.
But when people saw that codec call everyone went ape shit going "OMG, Kojima is trollin' 360!"

I know that it meant that, but, well, for that scene to appear during the whole Blu-ray/PS3 vs HD-DVD/360 war, it could have had double purpose :lol

:D

Can't wait for this game. Love the demo. I just hope there is more Big Boss than MPO had. It was too easy just to use generic soldiers. I would get rid of this feature for PW. Maybe only have Big Boss, Miller, Grey Fox/Null(Just putting it out there) and a few other major characters.

bleh I want to play this, but I don't want to buy a PSP just for this game.

I tried Portable Ops and the controls are just.. bad compared to PS2/PS3. Sure you could learn them but it didn't give the same flexibility.

Really want a PSN port, or hell, even a PS2 port. It is annoying when they put a game in a major series onto arguably the worst platform this gen, when it has been on a much better platform before.

(Mostly just annoyed that I can't play this unless I buy a system that I will never play again.)

My only problem with MGS on PSP is the controls. Portable Ops was terrible in that area (yes I messed around with the settings). If they can get that right, I'll be excited.

Normally I would agree, but this is Kojima.

I have bought the following systems based on his games appearing on them:
PSX
PS2
PS3
GC (urgh)

So I finally have to get a PSP now. Well at least I have a bunch of PS1 classics already on my PS3. :)

So what is the best PSP system to get? I just want good controls and nothing that locks me out of future games.

I am a huge MGS fan, but damn I'm sorry, can't get excited. Its a portable game, keep your portable games separate from your console ones. I can't get excited for a portable Zelda the same way I do a console Zelda, same goes for Mario, Metroid and every series. It is just not the same. It could be an excellent game but I just can't get excited for it.

I wish Kojima had the stones to say no to future MGS projects. We all know he doesn't, but I would like to see him work on another IP before he dies/retires.

This "if it's portable it sucks" thinking is absolutely ridiculous. Especially since a vast majority of quality games this generation are portable.

Cut out the handhelds and this generation would suck.

But ehh I guess people will have to get use to it, because if the industry is an indicator, portables will start to dominate consoles.

PlayStation Portable games that have sold or shipped at least one million copies.
Yah, I don't find it unlikely for this game to hit one million

The problem is that Metal Gear is a multi-million selling franchise. After they just got done making the series highly relevant again (thanks to wise play exclusivity and timing) I doubt they'd want to take the same risk with the franchise as Capcom did with Resident Evil 4, in which they (rightfully) backed out of in the last minute.

Isn't he the art director for Peace Walker?

Edit: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3176464

In an interview, Kojima also noted that the 2D illustrated demo scenes you'll see in Peace Walker are also interactive to some extent. "During these demos, there are parts that the player can work by himself, moving the camera and looking around," he said. That was [art director Yoji] Shinkawa's idea. There's no huge penalty if you ignore it, but it works its way into assorted aspects into the game."

"For example," Shinkawa added, "if you zoom in on the scene where you first meet Paz, you can see the uniform she has on under her coat, and then what's under that. It's an idea I came up with while thinking about what makes games different from movies or animation. I think it's pretty interactive."

It's from an interview in Famitsu.

when numbers like that are so few and far between, it leads people to agree.

hell, if the next GT game came out on PS2, it would also sell a few million. would that stop us from pronouncing it "dead"? or is it more reasonable to suggest that premiere franchises have a way of simulating a ventilator in the emergency room?

watching the chest of a patient on a vent going up and down doesn't mean they'll wake up one day.

Not sure if this is the proper PW thread to post this in, but I didn't want to make a new one.

Kojima's Twitter said:
I am planning on making around 10 promotional videos leading up to PW's release, but let's get the 1st one out for starts. I want to emphasize that "PW is MGS and stealth action is possible on PSP" and want people to understand it through the trailer. But I'm worried it might get buried under the next gen trailers because of the lack of high res graphics.

I'm glad to see that more promotion is planned for the game because it hasn't gotten much exposure since....what was it, TGS? Anyways, I hope these videos start dropping soon.

Sorry if old.

I really don't ever play mobile games.

I'd love to have this on PS2, at least.

The PSP is weird. I have a ton of games and they're all great, but none of them are the kind of games I want to play on the go, except maybe Patapon.

Yeah, I hope it is ported to the PS2 or PSN as well. I played the demo for PW. I thought it looked good, but I can't stand the way the PSP controls. It makes my hands hurt after a while.

I Was wondering that myself, if they ported this to the PS2 it could be its last swan-song. (pack it in with Portable ops)

They'd have to cut all of the wireless multiplayer features, not sure if they'd be up for that.
