i believe the name dreamcast was mocked/hated originally. i wasn't there for its reveal, but i guess it might have been due to one of the code names being katana, which was 'cooler'

i always thought it was a great name though. xbox, gamecube, and playstation were all boring 'it's a video game thing' names, but dreamcast was a lot more unique.
I always thought the Sega names packed more punch than the Nintendo ones... Mega Drive. Really, how bad ass is that when you let it sink in. I'm in the no boring/mockable names for NX too, the last thing it needs is some whacked out play on words. The console design needs to get our attention as well, no more candy colours...at least at launch, and it's gotta look cutting edge.
maybe the nx is the very concept of waiting.
Look at yew and your Zen. ;p

Yes, I think they need to say/show something more than "see you at E3 lol!", because if this was the plan all along it wouldn't made sense not to tell us directly last year, as usual when they are not going to say a word before E3.

I mean, this is the road we've been through:

-Iwata announces NX: "we won't announce anything until next year"
-Kimishima as new president: "we won't announce anything until next year"
-Now it's "next year": "oh sorry, we meant 'next fiscal year', wait a bit more"
-Starting new fiscal year: "hmmm... well, just wait until some meeting in a few weeks"

If the next step is:
-New FY briefing: "we'll talk about NX at E3/special event the last week of may, please understand"

Many people will be pissed, and rightfully. I mean, I'm not asking for a full blown unveiling with console, games, os, date and price, but I think we deserve more than a "announcement of an announcement". If they give us (investors and fans) the name, the basic philosophy behind the "brand new concept", or show us a prototype or a technical demo... anything, it'll be great. Nothing major, I understand they'll want to keep the biggest surprises close to their chests until the big event. Just anything more than a date to bear the pain the few weeks until the conference/direct.

I'd be ok with an announcement of an announcement if the Direct/Event is scheduled in the next seven days since the briefing tho... :p

I think Nintendo should be allowed to reveal their product on their own terms.

Can't wait to see what EPD, EPD Tokyo, Monolithsoft and Retro Studios hve been working on for NX.

Also what Nintendo's partners are working on from Good Feel, Intelligent Systems, Hal, NLG, Monster Games, Headstrong. Skip etc.

Nintendo will never, ever talk about the NX and mobile. It's all a put-on. That's their endgame.

Pretty diabolical

They can do whatever they want, but its obviously a good idea to keep your fans, investors, and potential market happy and informed. Hopefully whenever they do decide to spill the details everyone will be satisfied.

That said, I'm certainly not expecting a tech demo or prototype or anything like that. We should know if it's launching this year or next, and when the next big dump of info is coming. I'd be pleasantly surprised to get a name.

What is the Animal Crossing team working on? It seems like everyone has forgotten Animal Crossing - it was long suspected that a Wii U version was in development, it still is a system seller in most territories and it would be one of the easiest projects to move to NX, since now significant tech upgrades are required.

Well, it's not like they're gonna start selling the thing before telling us what it is. We're just really impatient and want to know now.

They released both Splatoon and AC: Happy Home Designer last year. Don't expect anything new from them in the near future.

All I want in my life right now is to enter neogaf and see a thread titled "Nintendo Direct announced".

This sounds like a great time for someone to bump an old Nintendo Direct announcement thread.

Hmm I could be wrong but I don't think most of the AC team worked on Splatoon.

The question is : will there be a direct for starfox. Also emily told us that we would hear something from zelda very soon? Would they do a reveal trailer of zelda nx version or the wii u one? Just wondering...

Every morning I wake up thinking "today's the day that Nintendo of Japan have announced it while I was sleeping".

If the hearing at the end of April has nothing but "Nx will be discussed at E3" I will be bitterly disappointed, give us an April/May reveal please PLEASE

Meh, PS4K isn't a new platform. All it is is a 4K capable PS4 with the specs beefed up to push those pixels. PS4 is still going to be the main focus for the vast majority of developers.

Yeah. Buying PS4K is kinda like upgrading your pc to get better performance and image quality. It is not bad though, if the upgrade in visuals is big enough it may be worth buying.

It could be that they only share little info about the nx to full reveal @E3. Instead they could focus on the mobile games the 27th. (I hope not, but you never know...)

If we are going to get the full reveal at E3, then I hope Nintendo go back to having a big on-stage presentation rather than just a Direct. That kind of thing can't be rushed.

Heck, ideally what I'd prefer is two digital events. One on the first night revealing the console, and then another the next day showing off all the new games.

But we already know how Mario Maker and Smash play.

Neglecting the expanded audience in the last years of the Wii and launching Wii U after almost two years of waiting and progressive introductions to the concept did not work out that well :/.

Expect a live conference for the reveal. Then the usual treehouse live where they'll spoil the entire opening area of Zelda U/NX and probably show the entire world map.
I wonder if they'll also have a tournament this year?

I doubt they will show the Wii U version of Zelda again, at least not now. At this point i think it's pretty obvious that they want to re-reveal the game on the NX, otherwise they would've prepared some footage for the TGA or the march direct.

About when they'll reveal the NX, Orgen said before E3 and hinted at more than name-dropping or stuff like that.

Wasn't gamecube rumoured to be named Starcube before they settled on gc?

Regarding that rumour about Final Fantasy, would be neat. It's been 20 years since the last time a mainline FF appeared on a Nintendo console.

Did Iwata say that or are you assuming again lol? Put up the receipts of him talking about having a major mario title day one.

And yes maybe. 3D World could've been shown off before the launch of Wii U and helped with the hype of the system ALA Galaxy for the Wii. That could've helped the system just like it being out on launch could've helped the system. There are no certainties and to be honest it's unlikely it would've helped that much.

And you are also saying that 3D Mario would've helped Wii U more than the 2D Mario that came out on launch. Your post here doesn't prove that. It just proves Mario helps sell systems. You can prove 3D Mario helped Wii U a little bit but you haven't provent hat 2D Mario wouldn't.

So I mean..jump to your conclusions but you have no way in truly knowing. even though you act like you do for some reason lol

One of the articles, this one from 2014 April.

Wonder if they already planned it foe the NX. If so, did they already know the power the nx console?

There are allot of other articles confirming that other mario is in the make.

Mostly hinted to mario galaxy 3.

There was one article after previous e3 that they are working on more mario games. One 2d and two 3d versions if I did remember it richt. Ofcourse paper mario could be one of them.

Yep. Was heavily rumoured as StarCube in the build up. Allegedly Yamauchi loved the name but everyone else convinced him it was terrible (especially for Western markets) so it was changed.

It was never officially confirmed as StarCube at any point, however.

Never heard of Starcube, it was always called Dolphin before the reveal.

It was definitely Dolphin. The GCN/Wii emulator is even named after the code name.

Dolphin was just the internal codename for the project. Much like Cafe for WiiU or Revolution for Wii. StarCube was being considered as the actual product name until fairly late in the process.
