Jason Kidd murdered my dog in cold blood!
August is hot, humid and horrible. I'd say October - November and March - May (except Golden Week) are the best months to go.

Okay, thanks. I'll have to talk to her tonight to see what we can do with that. Hot humid and horrible doesn't sound appealing.

Well, I finally have a date for when I'm going. Some school friends that live there are having a meet up, and I'll want to be there august 3rd - 7th.

Unfortunately looking at flights, the only cheap ones go through Canada and have brutal layover times. Like get in at 8pm and leave the next day at 1pm.

Might have to change my dates around and go longer.

Hopefully I can find a cheap hotel, as I'm thinking about staying in the same one the whole time, and just travel and come back every day. I'll probably be in the south the whole time anyway.

Just booked a flight for Tokyo for Sept 20 - October 4 2016. Going by myself to do a bit of soul searching. Can't wait.

what's wrong with golden week? my friend who lives there is a teacher so it's the only time I can go and have a guide who speaks some Japanese.

Tokyo felt packed enough on a regular weekday. I shudder to think what it would be like on days when most people don't have school or work. Trying to do anything touristy would test how much you value personal space.

Everything touristy will be extra crowded. Shinkansen trains can become so full that there'll be standing room only.

Next flight to Tokyo booked!!
From September 23 to October 8!
If there is another GAF meeting you can count me in!

Cool. Might see ya there.

ah that's not so bad. I'm not really a 'touristy things' type person - I was more worried the city would be empty because everyone went on holiday or something!

I'll mainly be shopping for clothes, eating food, got tickets for the Sailor Moon art exhibit - I'm in Tokyo for 6 days and then Nagasaki for 4. Plus a super-busy Shibuya Scramble means it'll probably live up to how I picture it in my head :p I love the hustle and bustle of urban areas.

m8 I commute in central london on the tube everyday, totally used to that.

at least my worries are a little eased now.

Cocky Londoner thinks his precious tube gets as busy as Tokyo during the busiest period in its calendar. How quaint. m8, the tube has it's quiet points during the day....I know! I've seen it first hand. Tokyo on the other hand was crazy busy during June and that wasn't even Golden week.

When will ya be in Tokyo?

12th Sept to 23rd Sept. Will be travelling around so maybe only spend a few days in Tokyo.

Tokyo Meetup in Shinjuku? ;)

Also, if you're interesting in going to see the Sumo wrestling then gimmie a shout. I'm more interested in going to that than TGS.

I mean during rush hour in central London you literally cannot fit another atom of human being in the train and I've been in platform crowds with no space at all - it's less a case of cockiness and more adhering to the laws of physics as it's actually not possible to be any busier.

Assuming I'm not somewhere for work, I'd be down for a Tokyo meetup sometime later in the year too.

Omggggg twenty four hours left. I could barely sleep last night lol

I can't believe we're going straight into golden week too. RIP killer tofu

I've been thinking about going to Japan for TGS this year and if I do I will be travelling solo. Have any of you gone solo before?
I've never been before so I have literally no idea where to go/what to do/where to stay etc

cool. I'm going to assume you are a fellow Norwegian going by the flag on your avatar, any idea where the best place to book hotels/places to stay are? or flights for that matter? I've been looking around a couple of places and prices seem to vary wildly :S

Try some different search engines. As a fellow Norwegian http://www.finn.no/reise/ is useful. You can also try https://no.tripadvisor.com, https://www.kayak.no, https://www.expedia.no and https://www.google.no/flights/

For places to stay you can also check AirBnB and Hostelworld in addition to the above.

So I am going to Japan for the first time in 10 days. Is there a recommended pocket WiFi rental company? I was going to go with global advanced comm but they all seem similar.

I've used tocoo the last 4 times I've been since they're the cheapest for 'unlimited' high speed data.

Ok, do we really need a converter if we're coming from the US?

For outlets? Nah.

Thanks! I assume there were no logistical problems with pickup or drop off since you used them multiple times?

Just picked up at the airports and dropped the included mailing envelope into a post box when done. You can also get it shipped to your hotel or hostel if you don't need Wifi before you're there.

I wasn't sure what bit to put it in on the post box and the writing on the post box near the hotel was faded >.> so I went back into the hotel and asked them which one to put it in to. Instead, they took it and said they would mail it for us. :D

Dunno, golden gai? Roppongi?

Or how about Shimokitazawa. Distant can be our bar guide.

Hmm... How bout either checking out the view from Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building or people watch at Yoyogi Park or Takeshita Street and then go to Golden Gai after?

Sounds good! I'd be up for whatever honestly. I am traveling alone so it would be great to do something really only worthwhile with a group of people. And nightlife would be on the top of my list.

It also depends on the amount of people attending such a meetup. I mean with 10 people it's probably no good to stop over at golden gai. I am no expert on Tokyo though, far from it.

Yeah, and we could have a look around at Golden Gai at least. Could probably find some other place to eat and drink in Shinjuku if we're that many.

Just sorted out my accommodation though I am not completely convinced. I'll be at kaisu hostel in Tokyo first, than stay at a family run inn in Nikko for two nights, head back to kaisu (I hope I can leave my suitcase there) for two more nights and then head to one of the top rated ryokans in Tokyo (it's in yanaka) for the last two nights.

I hope I can extent the stay at the Ryokan. They put me on a waiting list, lol. *wait*

So my 16h+ travel time finally starts Friday morning. I can't say I'm not excited though!

By the way, are there any photographers here with some interesting photography tips/ideas for Tokyo and Osaka?
