Overwatch has 7 million+ players

What does 7 million players mean, though? Are they actually referring to 7 million sales or is something like a print magazine claiming to be read by a 100 million people, because their surveys show that each printed magazine is read by 100 different people?

1 game per 1 account per 1 player, Overwatch doesn't have a "Free Trial" version if that's what you're implying

Overwatch is an almost perfect game. I have spent almost 50 hours on it in the last week. Enjoy your money, Blizzard, but please release new heroes and maps soon because I NEED THEM.

For you.
Activision was expecting their biggest launch since Diablo 3, and this would fit the bill since it's bigger than Draenor and only slightly behind Diablo 3.

Edit:

Actually, Diablo 3 was 6.3 million in its first week: http://www.pcgamer.com/diablo-3-sells-6-3-million-3-5-million-in-first-day/
To be fair, 7 million players doesn't mean 7 million sales. Though it shouldnt be too far off.

There are console versions. So it can be lent, rented, traded in, played across several accounts in the same console.

If there's 7M players that means it sold at LEAST 7M copies. If you factor in the amount of retail copies purchased but have not been played yet, it should be more.
This is incorrect.

Technically on PSN you can play on many different accounts if the account with Overwatch is set to primary. Still amazing number Blizzard does it again.

It's amazing and people bringing up 7 million players and I know people aren't trying to downplay it but what does the players mean? There is no free trial like Destiny where Activison can make up numbers right and they clearly aren't counting beta so it has to be 7 million sold then doesn't it? Or are we missing something?

Man I really want to give this a shot, but as a solo player (none of my friends even own a PS4, and everyone I used to play with has gone on to greener pastures) I hear it would be a nightmare.
I play it solo being an old fart with minimal free time and the game is a blast.

F*ck Bastion though : )

Where those haters at though.

But seriously, man there really were some people had convinced themselves if the yelled loud enough that they would believe OW would under-perform and flop.

Again, since they are likely counting unique account logins, 7 million players means at least 7 million copies were sold. It does not factor in retail copies that were sold through and never opened/used, and likely doesn't include people who bought the game on multiple platforms as it would count that as one User.

So again, it should be reiterated that the game sold at least 7 million units unless Blizzard is using some unorthodox way of qualifying people as users (which is unlikely).

I wouldn't be surprised if Activision sends out a press release soon claiming #1 new IP in history.

* I should add that this obviously doesn't factor in the secondary market (trade, rental, etc) but in the first week of release I think that's a fairly small factor.

Really exceeded my expectarions. Congrats. Any success story in the traditional gaming industry at this point is great.

What if I let someone borrow my ps4 disc and they use it on their ps4?

Wait, so is it sold 7 million or 7 million players?

Those are completely different.

7 million players, and regarding PC it's not that different due to the Battle.Net client structure of 1 game per account per player. I'm not sure on consoles but it's safe to say the vast majority of players are on PC.

Renting, lending, used sales, game sharing on the same console across different accountability. So it isnt 7 million sold, but it shouldnt be too far from it either.

Again, no.

Thread title needs a correction.

It's funny the thread merge went with the misleading title when the first thread had the correct title.
