Mirror's Edge Catalyst - Review Thread

The PC Gamer review (78%) sounded like a game I want to play. I'm looking forward to the full version.

The biggest disappointment for me coming out of these reviews is the complaint about tedious late-game forced combat encounters against tanky foes. I can't imagine why anyone would think that kind of thing is a good idea for this design.

"if you loved Mirror's Edge 1 you'll like this" seems to be a common, but to me really questionable, remark. Most of what changed reads as a complete turn-off for me.

same.
Like, I hope it's great, obviously. but from everything I've read, most of the decisions they've made I sit here and have to wonder... why? the 'modernization' of the game to fit all of the AAA spaces current trends was not a good decision imo.

Because EA believes that game development is best commoditized and that game design isn't much of a skill?

This is a terrible post and it doesn't deserve a follow up.

The things we remember nostalgically of the first Mirror's Edge are the art direction and a single song from the soundtrack.

The story wasn't good, the graphics weren't great, the combat was bad and the controls were clunky. Overall, it hasn't aged well.

Amen. I tried to play it in 2015 to see what the fuss was about and I got it for practically nothing from the EA Humble Bundle a while back. Played it for about an hour and thought it was terrible but okay looking. This sequel looks like more of the same, nothing redeeming about it IMO.

If a game is good enough I should be able to play it x years after release and still enjoy it. I still enjoy the older Gran Turismo games and those are close to 20 years old for example.

Despite the low scores (not unlike the original) I'll still try it out. However, as soon as I heard that it would be open-world I kind of expected this. I just can't imagine it fitting with what made Mirror's Edge so good. Linearly designed levels that you could master and complete in a fast time is what it excelled at.

That's what I expected. In the 7-8 range. I really enjoyed the beta but it's got issues.

Honestly, though, I'm just glad Mirrors Edge gets another entry. I'll take what I can get.

That's my complaint for most games these days.

Game that was not universally praised gets a sequel that stays faithful to the original. The sequel turns out to not be universally praised. Gasp.

Have you even read any of the reviews? Also the first game was received much better than this game, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

It has nothing to do with age, plenty of people just don't like Mirror's Edge. That's fine (I love the game), but the game is as good today as it was in 2008

Graphics on PC were pretty amazing to me, and the controls were novel and exciting.

Yes, I've read several and I played the beta a ton as well as ran through as much content as I could during the EA Access Trial.. But go on, make assumptions all you want.

The reviews are exactly what I expected from a niche game like this. They more or less mirror the reviews of the original, which I loved.

Hm. I've got Odin Sphere pre-ordered. Don't know if I want to grab Mirror's Edge now or wait for a price drop. These scores seem pretty mixed. Nothing that screams DO NOT BUY, but I don't know if I need it right now.

GameSpot makes it seem like another different-but-flawed gem. To be honest I've been more interested in those types of games recently than in well-executed formulaic AAA games.

This is factually untrue.

In my experience the final combat encounter is the only one in the original game that's mandatory.

It seems like it has all the shortcomings I would expect from trying to copy the Ubisoft AAA model.

The original Mirror's Edge was one of the defining games of last gen for me and one that I revisit for a yearly play through as well.

I still want to check out Catalyst but I can't help but feel this was a wasted opportunity.

Once they announced they were going open world with this my excitement was deflated. Skimming through the reviews only reaffirms my fears of the effect it has on the ME formula. I'll probably pick this up for on Black Friday.

Tell me more about what "I remember" of a game that's one of the only non-Mario 3D platformers with depth.

You know it's okay to dislike a game that's more than ten minutes old without having to make some statement about it "aging badly" as a result of that?

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
A few years from now, "This game is amazing"

Same exact thing will happen.
Yup, it will be another case of revisionist history where "everyone loved catalyst, even though it didn't sell or review well"

Yeah, I think I'm going to get this on PS4. It seems like a game I'm going to want to keep playing after the campaign, and being able to take my console with me when I travel is worth the visual tradeoff as opposed to if I got it on PC and couldn't take it with me.

Sure, but reviews consist of way more than just the scores.
Sure, so read the text of the review. And like I said earlier, a lot of reviews seem to indicate that the game is on par with the first game just with new problems, or potentially even worse.

That's not what many wanted to see in a sequel. People wanted marked improvement on what was a flawed gem.

Yup, it's a really common comment, and a really strange one to approach.

I liked the first one, but wanted to see a lot of things fixed up. So is this game for me? Or is this game only for people who were fanatically in love with the first?

Reviews aren't super great, but I adore the original and I enjoyed my time with the beta.

However, I'll probably wait for a sale. Overwatch is all I need for now.

I don't think that this is for people who fanatically loved the first, this is a stepdown for me in pretty much every way.

Mirrors Edge 2008 79 on ps3.

Mirrors Edge Catalyst 71 on ps4.

Revisionist history already happening.

Mirror's Edge 2008 79 on X360.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst 74 on XONE.

5 points is not "much worse". I imagine a lot of people would write off both games if they're the type to avoid anything with a 7 in its score unless that 7 comes after a 9 and a decimal point.
