Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

It would be interesting to see what the people who trashed Nintendo for this reason say about this now

Not a comparable situation. Sony is actually going to have other things to show this year other than one cross-gen title & the ps4 isn't dead in the water.

I think they have to handle this very carefully. No one wants to get New 3DS'ed with poor performing back-ports on the old hardware and visuals that are below where things would be if they had targeted the old one specifically.

I already don't trust the cert process of either MS or Sony to turn down low framerate games. To handle two different powered boxes well, they'll need to grow some brass and be mean to poor performing old box versions.

Just as expected, why put Neo at e3 when e3 should be all about games? Wasting 15 minutes showing a console is a waste of time when they can show us games for Ps4 wich is what and fans want, do Neo own event to talk with more detail and that´s it.

Amazing news lads, time to celebrate now!

What is this post? You do know hardware is shown all the time at E3?

Could we change that thread title please? I sense the general message here is that Neo won't be shown at E3, not just that Sony accepts his existence.

Andrew House, president and global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told the Financial Times that the “high-end PS4” would be more expensive than the current $350 version.

Hmm, interesting. I hope those extra costs go to a beefier CPU.

the new console will be “standalone profitable at the time that we launch

No news, but this is pretty much a confirmation that we won't see any exotic stuff.

This is good to hear, good news that all current and future PS4 games will work on Neo and no Neo-exclusive games. As for it no appearing at E3, to be fair if it was a brand new console then i'd be a little upset it wasn't appearing. But as it's an upgrade, most likely will appear later in the year. Sony have VR to focus on at present.

A Tick Tock like model to me would be the best compromise:

Tick: New numbered console with architecture changes.

Tock: More powerful version of the console that share the same games and architecture.

Seems like a waste of time in my opinion, why not do a separate event and show just games at e3? When i watch e3 i think of GAMES not HW announcements.

In fact Xbox One and Ps4 had their own events aswell back in the day.

But Sony doesn't have declining sales and flop system sis so truly they don't need to be dragged. Plus with the added benefit of having third parties including many first party titles themselves, they aren't on the brink of extinction and actually need to show this system, unlike Nintendo. Sad, because Zelda might be the only thing y'all get this year while the PS4 is still well supported into 2017

oprah-shade-birthday.gif

Your reasoning is legit sis. On second thought, Sony's system isn't flopping so they shouldn't be panicking. It's even sad-er when we're being shown ZELDA and that ain't releasing until NEXT YEAR!

It's the smart move

They have a comfortable lead in the market and they are preparing to launch another expensive machine (VR) that should not be cannibalized. As Oculus and Vive have shown us, it is a very shaky market for the first iterations. And I bet Sony invested a lot more in R&D for VR than for the Neo.

Microsoft are the ones that are losing mind share by the day. A console iteration makes sense for them. Shake up things at a somewhat low opportunity cost.

If I was House I would wait and see how that MS console is perceived by the consumers and after that make a definitive decision of going Neo or PS5 in 2018. We all know that a PS5 in 2018 would not be much better than the rumored Scorpio, but the "5" in the tagline goes longways in terms of marketing.

Wait, people were really expecting a new next-gen type console? lol

Some are sure as shit are acting like this is doom and gloom if they do not show it, something something timeframe before launch, cause reasons and tales!

If it is the same ecosystem, they can show the thing the week before launch. It is not the same as a whole new platform timeframe. Software is software, sales are sales, the old PS4 will be phased out due to fab/chip allotment, and the new cost reduction or even break are built into this model. It is all part of the AMD roadmap.

It's been rumored/leaked since GDC so it skipping E3 seems strange. It's nice to see Sony officially confirm it though.

Current PS4 sales will plummet if they announce it at E3. There are still millions of people in the world that don't even know PS4 Neo exist. Confirming it will get the disappointment out the way before E3.

Good. more space for more games.

Is this serious? Sony is doing z regular E3 and not showing just one game all day.

and that one game isn't even coming this year.

They are referring to the people who complained about Nintendo not showing NX at E3 saying it was ridiculous because the system "needed to be there." Has nothing to do with the show itself.

I don't understand why anyone thought it was going to be there.

Rumors, "leaks", endless cycles of speculation, the fact that e3 is not stranger to hardware reveals, and nearly nothing asserting to the fact that it wouldn't be there?

I don't understand why anyone thought it would absolutely not be there. The possibility was certainly there.

Not really tbh. Announcing an upgrade to your system 3-4 months in advance seems strange, especially when you want your current platform to keep selling.

They'll announce it properly weeks before the launch ie just like the phone and tablet industry.

With that though, you'll eventually end up going with either the tick or the tock. For instance, there are people who only go for the "S" model of iPhones, skipping out on the proper new numbered model altogether.

Here's an article from right after the launch of PS4 and Xbox One in 2013..

http://www.videogamer.com/news/ea_expects_to_see_a_new_console_generation_in_5-6_years_time.html

EA expects to see a new console generation in 5-6 years time

Xbox One and PS4 successors to roll out in 2018/2019, exec predicts

28th Nov, 2013

Xbox One and PlayStation 4 may have only just arrived, but that hasn't stopped EA from talking about their successors.

Talking with MCV, EA Studios EVP Patrick Soderlund revealed that he expects the next console generation to arrive in around five to six years time, suggesting that the life spans of PS4 and Xbox One may not live up to those of their predecessors.

"This console cycle [360/PS3] may have gone on a little bit longer than I would have wanted," Soderlund told the site.

"At the same time, you have seen games like The Last of Us and GTA V at the end of a cycle which perhaps you would not have expected a few years ago. But a five, six year gap is what I expect going forward."

Soderlund's predictions suggest that the life of the new console generation could come to an end years sooner than that of Xbox 360 and PS3.

The Xbox One launched on the 8-year anniversary of Xbox 360, with PS3 arriving 7 years after its Japanese debut. Microsoft has said previously that it expects Xbox One to last "conservatively a decade".

Nevertheless, if proved correct the shorter cycle may suit third-parties. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has previously criticised the 360/PS3 for outstaying their welcome, suggesting that the eight year wait for new consoles stifled interest in the industry.

And once Xbox Scorpio is also confirmed, that article is pretty much vindicated, especially considering how old it is. .

Chances are these types of folks would be more enticed at a regular ps4 price drop announcement than a $400+ Neo just for better specs. As long as Sony get the message across about no exclusive games.

The most depressing thing is from that article it makes it seems like the Neo won't have games just developed for it. Hopefully within 2 years of launching they will start to develop games just for that and move to the endless console cycle instead of cutting gamers/developers knees out in 3 years time and launch a PS5.

ghst

thanks for the laugh
don't worry, i'm sure you'll see plenty of in game footage running on neo('s estimated equivalent spec) even if the console itself is absent.

At least this should put an end to some dudes around here thinking, that the old PS4 won't be sold anymore after Neo's launch.

Now I just hope they won't launch it alongside PSVR, two new 400$ and upwards devices around the same time is a bad idea, but of course they need to announce it with specs/price and all before PSVR launch.

What I'm wondering is will they secretly show new games for 2017 that are displaying NEO mode graphics just for the WOW factor without telling us?

Lying is a big no no for any public company. All games will be shown running on a PS4 hardware, until the point when Sony unveils Neo.

And as we can all see PS4 still has much life in it. The best is yet to come. :)

Wow, its missing E3? That's a pretty big deal.

Not really. They don't to fill their conference with demos of existing titles to show off the improved power. It would be flaccid as fuck.

I never expected it to show up.

I don't understand why anyone thought it would never, absolutely not be there.

I thought the rumor was TGS reveal.

Since Neo is an iterative upgrade and Sony wants PS4 sales to continue at a steady pace, my guess is the new hardware will be announced as close to launch as possible. Like, I wouldn't be surprised if it's revealed less than a month before it releases. Hell, they could probably get away revealing it the week it comes to market.

Both these consoles arriving next year makes the specs and alleged pricing less and less impressive from a PC users perspective. I would love to hear a knowledgeable explanation of why this makes business sense for Sony, unless they announce it quite soon after e3.

Makes sense. I'm skeptical we'll see it this year, or at least before PSVR launches. Let PSVR bed in, then start showing it, with the benefits it'll have for VR too.

But if MS shows Xbox Scorpio, ps4' sales would tank anyway...

Scorpio would have to launch before NEO to hurt anything. Scorpio and Neo being announced and not released until 2016 has the potential to slow down both PS4 and Xbox One's sales, though.

LOL what? Do you know how many times E3 reels were shown with Sony/MS games that were actually running on PC?

Because those very rumors said the release was a long ways off. Revealing it now would be damaging to PS4 sales.

For something that can't be bought until a rumoured late 2017?

MS will do the move. Xbox one sells less every NPD. It already tanked. I could bet MS will do the move just like 360 era. Almost one year ahead with a 6tf console + rift.

It's just the same strategy as Sony. Get the hardcore gamer.

I think Scorpio will be available this year, before black Friday.

But they will keep the Xbox one in its slim shape and cross games for 2-3 years more.
