Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

As much as I want the Neo myself I do wonder why the timing of this now. Why is this a thing that they're doing this year rather than next? PS4 sales are absolutely steam rolling ahead and I can't imagine they were at all worried by Nintendo's NX, should it have come out this year. And Microsoft's next system is clearly further out than the Neo which I presume Sony would have some idea about.
It does feel like they've jumped the gun a bit, which is even weirder considering they're obviously going to be pushing PSVR this year, so to complicate the message like this about a new console seems strange. Wonder what prompted it. Were they just trying to get way ahead of Microsoft or what? Genuine Q, and yeah I know these decisions are all made years in advance usually, which makes it even stranger they'd do this and clash with the PSVR launch. Neo should have been something only even hinted at once PSVR was out the door, because unlike some, I know Neo isn't some remedy for PS4's apparent failing in regards to PSVR. It has little, if anything to do with PSVR.

Anecdotal or not, but when I hear people outside of online forums talk about these new consoles, then it has transcended message board talk and is not entering more public awareness.
Also, this same word of mouth spreading is the SAME THING that hurt Microsoft whenever they spouted their BS about always online and no used games.

The PS4 will get ALL the titles, there will be NO exclusive Neo titles. We know this from the leaked Sony documents.

6TF at 399? Even for a 499 price they will get their attention. And heat with those mobile like cpugpus they can found a easily resolution...
It'll slow their sales, but the PS4 is a good product and Sony has quite a bit of brand loyalty. Right now the competition doesn't have better products out to really capitalize off any Sony mis-steps.

1) Dates my move forward or backward. You want your armies ready to go in the event of a date change. That's why we are asked to be compliant by X date.

3) I would assume we would be letting people know which version, if allowed to show at all
4) What mess? This is their first OFFICIAL announcement. Everything you thought before was based in rumors. Any discrepancies between the two are purely on the individual who consumed the rumors. I can only assume they will be answering questions when they deem appropriate. All this is is an announcement it exists, nothing more.

Guess this E3 will be all about the games and PSVR now then, what with no NX and it's very unlikely we will see Scorpio this early either.
I could still happen. Only it makes no sense announcing that so early. They could unveil it in October for a November launch. Device like this requires same approach as Apple does for their phone upgrades.
MS on other hand maybe aims to introduce brand new generation, so earlier announcement of Scorpio may happen.
Sony would laugh all the way to the bank while their PS4 continues to sell great all up to late 2017 when Scorpio is rumoured to be launched. Plus, promises from MS are not really regarded well by the general public. It would be wiser from them to have really kickass presentation with tons of optimized games, and not just "we threw money at better hardware" tease this E3.

I'm actually glad about this Not having it at E3 makes it seem like less of a big deal, and maybe not everything we see will be running on it.

Yea... This doesn't seem like it will impact the console space negatively at all. In fact Andrew is confirming today that Ps4 is still the bread and butter for the rest of the gen. You guys are really overreacting, but I at least some sensible posts like this so whatever.
I would like a time frame though I want to get another ps4, but would definitely like my second one to be the Neo.
I'm really beginning to think a big chunk of game really doesn't do that much gaming lol. New hardware is exciting, but if it's coming this year, doesn't really matter where the reveal is, I'm mostly excited about new titles.
Even though most in this site already have one.

I'm sorry that was terrible and adds nothing of substance to this thread but reading the post I envisioned that response so I allowed it to manifest. Will be trading in my xbone and OG PS4 once the Neo is released. Atleast there is no confirmation.

At 399 I think that would be selling at a loss. As for heat you better hope as pushing 6TF is a mean task and who wants overheating this year if a short wait into next year can progress chip shrinkage.
Happy you're optimistic but with no dev kit leaks about Scorpio plans for this year you'd best temper your expectations.

My exact thoughts.
Not getting the point of the refresh. Why bother if games don't target it.
It's either an ignored peripheralesque situation, or the vanilla ps4 is a compromised platform.
I guess they want to go iterative so that they don't start from 0 user base at the start of Tue next cycle. So when PS5 (OR a machine which would have been a ps5 level) is launched, NEO then becomes platform base and vanilla PS4 is relegated to legacy. Some simple games target all three like cross generation do now but most don't?
Is that the plan going forward?

My 4K tv produces 4K content via Netflix and YouTube and it looks amazing. I'm frothing for more 4K content any way i can get it.
lol, I don't think Sony is concerned about anything Xbox, nor they should be. Satya Nadella will do what he did to windows phone to xbox sooner than later with how reportedly it's under performing, in that in a couple of years it's still officially around and supported but everyone knows better that practically it's dead. There is no room for continuing failures this big in present Microsoft. If they are smart before their IPs lose all of their value, they license them out like Disney did.

If this thread is any indication I can't wait for e3, great morning reading.
As well as from what Andrew House specifically stated. PS4 to Neo optimisation seems relatively painless and it's up to devs to decide how much they want to do with the extra grunt they will have available.
Everything will run fine, as it was always going to Neo or not, on the PS4 base model. Cannot be stressed enough. The Neo isn't even as much of a departure that would tempt devs to design the game around Neo then put out a terrible PS4 version. We all know they'd be roasted alive if such a shoddy situation occurred anyway, plus for the foreseeable future PS4 will always have the much higher install base between the two.

What? I don't get it. If MS goes first, Sony would be even more comfortable in their position . They could see how people would react to the New Xbox and adapt if necessary, they could even delay it if they felt unable to compete.
A lot of people won't care about improved version of consoles, PS4 will keep selling just fine.

I let my friends buy what they want, I don't suggest anything. But if they asked me whether it would be worth getting one or not it would depend on how much they want to have one now, what they want to play (are the games out already?) and whether they are willing to spend more than $350 on a new console.
People act like this is going to change the world. It's not. This is the introduction of a higher priced, premium SKU. It will have limited market penetration due to its price. It is simply an additional option for those who can afford it.

Potentially you could play 4K Blu-rays and watch Netflix in 4K (I can do this using Amazon Fire TV even if it's not done correctly).
I'd also assume the UI would be in 4K but maybe I'm wrong about that.

There it is. NEO probably gonna be $499 while the OG PS4 sits at $249-299. Lol at everyone who sold their Ps4's thinking they were going to get a NEO for less than $400. Honestly don't know how people saw that as being plausible.

"high-resolution content" probably means Blu-ray 4K movies, Netflix, etc.

And also, we might see a game called Dead don't rise from a Sony team, but do you know how it plays? What it looks like? What's the theme? How does knowing particular titles of gsmes to be shown detract in anyway from the actual reveal of them?
