Doesn't anyone still remember how this generation started? Sony said "nah, no need to rush to market; we're gonna hang back and react to whatever Microsoft does" at which point they knew they'd be first to hit market.

What if House is just lying and playing coy? If it is there but not on the show floor. They know it's out. They still want to show it and they might as well. The Dev kits out (according to posters in this thread) so it is happening. These people aren't bound to speak the truth, ya'know?

Kaz Hirai spoke to The Times when he said they'd hang back and react to Microsoft. We created the same buzz then. What's different? Why do we always assume they are speaking the truth? I'm not being paranoid I'm just saying that we should treat this as what it is. A PR person trying to create PR. Not scripture.

It would make a great amount of sense to show games at E3 as they will look on PS4. Then do a later separate show that talks only about NEO and show neo version of the games close to launch.

To me it feels increasingly like Neo ships in 2017, at least in NA. One possibility would be that they release Neo in Japan holiday 2016, giving PSVR the focus for holiday 2016 everywhere else. That shows some love to the smaller Japan audience and gives them a 4K bluray player, gets the manufacturing rolling, and even if they are losing a bit of money at first it won't be much.

Then in Feb/March 2017 when console sales are slow, introduce the Neo to get the early adopters in and excited.

Finally in Fall 2017 when Scorpio is released, they drop the price to be lower than Scorpio if it significantly outperforms Neo.

If Neo mode is not 60 FPS for most games, nobody is going to spend the extra cash on Neo are they, whats the point ?

I could put Money on MS bringing the power, no way will they be gimped again.

Even with more power 60fps is not certain .
Open world games would really get help from a better cpu still even then i don't think some devs will do that .
When you look at it a good amount of games are already 60fps this gen .

Nah, the only way Sony would give up Xmas sales world wide is if they have to wait for the technology to be ready for production (CPU improvement).

If Neo is ready for Japan, its ready world wide. Sony no longer thinks like Nintendo imo, japan is not important for the console market. Sony seemed to have woken up to where the market is and re-organised to focus on how to sell well (and thats not Japan).

Nothing is certain, but a Jaguar CPU is more likely to be the bottleneck in most cases if Sony do little to the CPU but up the clock.

Games that I like such as Witcher or Games running on Frostbite I think will get options from those devs, as they do it on PC anyway.

awesome, good on them for getting ahead of this. and also not taking up E3 conference time for it as well. Sony seems to be staying in tune with what people want (and don't want) from E3 press conferences.

There is less than zero chance that it launches in Japan first.

Wasn't going to buy the Neo but my white PS4 has started spitting out discs and despite my troubleshooting it isn't fixing itself.

It really depends on the CPU and how smoothly they can move code between the consoles. If the CPU is substantially better and code translates easily, I think a lot of devs would opt to go for 60 with some better AA/AF/shadows and be done. No one would be disappointed with that and it would be faster and less work than other options and the older console will still have a nice looking and viable 30fps build.

I genuinely think that advertising this as a 60fps gaming box with 4K blu support would be the best approach if they want to target high end, enthusiast players.

I know it won't happen in all cases but I think it would be a good scenario overall.

No one cares about quality.

Even to this day, DVDs outsell Bluray discs in many markets.

IHS had a report that in the UK, in 2015, there were almost 5x as many DVDs sold as blurays.

Garbage. Many people care about quality, enough people that TVs are being made the way they are and how they're marketed. Same goes for audio.

DVDs are cheap, as is the equipment used for it. Fortunately, those players are getting all but entirely phased out and even if it has to force people to buy at least a bluray player is better. Just like how people are starting to get forced into buying 4K/UHD TVs because the 1080p models are garbage and all the quality features can only be had on mid-upper tier UHD TVs. Those people when they buy these sets with online reviews, or in big box stores like Best Buy will be basically told they need to get better stuff to get a better picture.

And VHS stayed alive long into the DVD age. DVDs will thankfully die, sooner than later hopefully.

But I don't care. If people are happy with mid-tier PQ and low-tier audio that's fine, they can keep it with their streaming and even worse DVDs. There's more than enough people wanting or getting sold into higher quality stuff, and it will come along, even if forced into homes.

That's why people need to look at it less as "Sony can reel it back in and change the PS4 to be stronger!" and more as "What will Sony do to keep customers when they end up being the least powerful?" I know people don't want to consider it, but I legit think that Scorpio is going to end up being the most powerful console compared to Neo. Sony's focus will then to do whatever it takes to keep customers' eyes on Neo and not Scorpio. It should be interesting.

I'd imagine Sony's answer would be PS5 in 2-3 years.

Which would likely be an even higher-spec PS4, but with the base number changed to indicate a new generation of software.

“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,”

I can think of no reason to have a regular and high end ps4 side by side? It's one or the other if you own neither. And if you upgrade its surly a case of offloading the regular console

i wonder if they would do a upgrade discount for people who currently have PS4.....probably not =/

only thing I hope for is that they don't do bullshit that Nintendo did with things like Xenoblade Chronicles, where it's "ONLY for the NN3DS"

As in, they're not going to stop selling the regular ps4. They're going with a budget and a high end version simultaneously on the market.

He's talking from the market point of view, he's not referring to the indivudual consumer.

There will be no games exclusive to the Neo model, every title will be available on both

Interesting.

Still gonna hold out for more details but if future games and VR are compatible with the current ps4, I might just have go the casual route rather than be all hardcore about it.....lol.

So.... Special PS event in winter of 2017 to announce the redesigned Neo, with a Fall 2017 launch date. 2 Skus till.... What? 2019. Neo takes over as the singular PS console and then PS5 releases in Fall 2020.

I've been holding off purchasing a PS4 for the last few years, and now this happens.

I don't know if I can stand waiting another year, or if it's even going to worth it.

What should I do? Should I just cave in and buy a PS4 now or should I wait for the Neo?

Smh.

He's not talking about literally having the two consoles sitting next to each other in your home. It's a business idiom indicating that two similar products where one has extra features don't cannibalise each other's sakes.

Like the Apple S-suffix indicating a slightly higher spec, the two products 'sir' next to each other.

OT - if he's ring straight up the reason they're not showing it at E3 is because there's no content to show yet. One there are a few games ready we'll see it.

Interesting targeting too - definitely looks like it'll have a UHDBD player.

This E3 will be all about PSVR. It would be incredibly silly to shift focus away from that and have Neo and PSVR go head to head. My guess is TGS.

From the International Business Times:

So information is still possible, just no physical console shown (which I never expected)?

http://www.ibtimes.com/e3-2016-sony-confirms-ps4k-neo-upgrade-dont-expect-reveal-next-week-2380695

I think like 95% of people expected Feb 2013 PS4 style unveil anyway. It will be hilarious if all Sony meant was they're not showing the physical unit and we still get specs/release date and price. Will make this topic look hilarious.

In reality though, I expect none of the 3 above. At most just a PR confirmation style sentence parroting the above (it's coming, stay tuned).

Just logic. If it came out this year, E3 would be the perfect stage to reveal it.

Common sense. PSVR is SIE's primary focus this year. PSX will be the best time to show the Neo. Not E3, where the focus should be on games/hardware priced and ready for release this year.

Given Neo-enabled titles can start being released from September 21st 2016 onwards, I'd be tempted to believe it's coming this year.

Uh... hm. I was planning on picking up a PS4 or "Neo" based on E3 information on the latter sometime this year, but I suppose now I should just wait until the Neo is finally confirmed?? I'm really unsure. This seems like a mistake.

It does seem a bit like the worst of both worlds. People know it's coming, so many will want to wait rather than buy a standard PS4, but we don't know what it is or what benefits it will offer. It's all the downside of announcing without any of the hype building.
