Zelda Wii U - Recap of 5 hours gameplay stream

You remember this gif where Chiko throws the sword and then picks it up with the magnet move and tries to hit the guardian with it?
jf8y45N.gif

My friend and I had beaten the rock golem the day before, so we wanted to get to this area to defeat a guardian. I found the place, but regardless of how many arrows and weapons I had, I couldn't seem to do enough damage and knew I wouldn't be able to beat it before the time ran out. My friend decided to go explore the area in his game, and he found a giant metal door down in a ditch near the end of the plateau. Using the magnet move, he picked it up, hauled it over to the guardian, and, hiding behind the wall, bashed it over the guardian's head over and over until it died. I followed suit, opting to whack the door horizontally back and forth into the guardian (it kinda ended up looking like that middle finger gif that swirls around the guy's face). I wish we had gotten footage of it. It was hilarious. And awesome!

Wait...you actually beat a guardian using Magnesis? What is this game? Madness. Absolute Madness.

So what you're saying is...

...you defeated a giant mechanical spider monstrosity with a death laser cannon by lifting up a giant metal door with magnesis and proceeded to beat the shit out of it?

Did it drop something of significance? Some lore item?

I'm playing the demo later this week. I'm definitely trying this, the bomb shield thing...and I also wanna see what happens if you throw food at the bokoblins...

And what happens when you attack the Old Man a bunch.

I need to know.

Any other weird demo requests?
I saw gamexplain try it, the old man just kinda blocked the attacks and didn't say anything.

I have some things I'd like you to find out!
1) can you shorten the witchtime slowmo by breaking lockon, or switch targets? It seems to last really long.
2) stasis Rune experiments! Basically nobody besides treehouse has even gotten it. The shrine is in the middle south of the plateau; you can sprint there, get it, and leave the shrine. Find out if link can ride on or be propelled by boulders or logs he launches from stasis. Also others have suggested checking whether you can freeze enemies, thrown weapons, arrows, fireballs, etc.
3) can you activate the slowmo shooting just by jumping?
4) try to replicate the seesaw that journo built. Get that metal plank underwater outside the Magnesis shrine (I think it's in the northeast?), put it on a chest, levitate a boulder over the other end, and launch yourself.
Get somebody to film this shit and you'll be a legend :p

Now that we've seen more of the game from the initial reveal, do we have a hint at what kind of arrow Link was shooting in the original trailer at the guardian?

arrow-2.gif

It looks really unique.
Dang, I never noticed how he pulls the ring on the back of the arrowhead to activate it. Neat.

See if you can 1) cut down one of those trees with trunks wider than Link is tall, 2) ignite a tree into a big fireball (I don't actually expect this one to work because a living tree will be too wet; the brushfires only happen in dry grass, for example), 3) ignite a log after you cut a tree down, and 4) if you have access to the Magnesis Rune, if you can rip swords out of the bokoblins' hands.

Please and thank you.
1) I think you can, but don't quote me
2) 3) trees and logs can't burn :(
4) I saw some footage of people using Magnesis during a fight, can't remember whether weapons were highlighted though. Don't think so, but I'd also like to know.

Hopefully she can afford a better hairstylist this time around.
Oi m8, you better not be talking shit about SS Zelda's hair

I don't have the sharpest eye when it comes to graphics- the actual in game footage also does include some AA, right? I haven't really seen much in the way of jaggies, so that's pretty nice.

Oh hey, didn't notice that you replied to my post earlier. Sorry this response is a bit late. :p

To answer your question, yes, the direct feed screenshots confirm there is some AA (just not very good AA), which surprised me because I wasn't expecting any, going by the 10 second teaser they showed last year.

Now I'm not an expert myself but from what I can tell, it's probably edge AA (which is typical Nintendo). This shot makes it fairly clear. You can see the edges of character models are mostly jaggy free but any details internal to those edges are a staircase mess. Thankfully moments where it's this obvious are rare, though.

2) and 3) Sadly what I expected.
4) It does work on swords that are just on the ground, so it'd be pretty disappointing if the metal weapons were just magically immune to magnetism while enemies are holding them.

Actually during the footage I was thinking of the bokoblins had wooden clubs. It's fairly rare for them to have metal weapons so I'm not sure we can find out from footage.

I definitely saw a few with swords. The only one I can remember offhand is the blue bokoblin in the giant skull structure where you can shoot down a lantern and blow the place up. But no, we won't see footage of it for a while, with e3 over and all.

This is really silly, but Zelda voiced by a British voice actress is like my dream come true, lol.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKK I'm gonna have to buy an NX, aren't I? I am already poor as it is! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

a feature i would have like d in this game is being able to take notes on the map using the wiipad...i know we have all those stickers, but being actually able to write on it would be a better solution (i think there was something similiar in ultima underground)

probably th game being also on NX makes this an impossible feature

I wonder if the Zelda demo already told us stuff about NX features without anyone noticing, that will be obvious in hindsight. I can't help, for example, feeling the whole "Shiekah Slate" thing will be a huge "oooooh of course!" moment when we'll find out more about what NX actually is.

I also like the theory about weapon/item select being a possible huge pointer towards clickwheel L/R keys.

The Sheikah Slate was clearly based around the Wii U Gamepad, before they decided to abandon all Wii U-specific functionality.

I've got a feeling you're spot-in with your second point.

The only thing I'm getting from this is that Link is the new Patrick.

"SPIDERS!!! DIE SPIDERS! DIE SPIDERS! AHHHH!"

But seriously though, that is so cool. This game really is a sandbox. Man I can't wait to play it next year!! :D

I definitely can see the scrollable/clickable L/R wheels be the big upgrade for the NX controller. With the inventory Zelda has it would be so good. It just makes sense.

Wow that is really fantastic! They really need to include a video sharing mechanism for the NX, this game is absurdly giffable.

Thanks, that's pretty clear from the image you found, yeah.

I'm curious why they even decided to use AA seeing as how they left it out for a lot of previous Wii U titles. The only reason I can think of is that no AA would make the grass edges look absolutely dreadful, and seeing as how this game is chock full of grass that's something they'd want to avoid. But based on the impressions so far they could wind up removing it to improve framerate stability for the Wii U version anyway.

I can't stop watching videos of Zelda. I honestly haven't been this excited about a game in years, kinda crazy since I don't really like open-world games.

Riiiiiiight? We should make a playlist with all gameplay (without comment or Treehouse only).

That game really.. Its like Nintendo is doing what i've been asking them forever. SHowing everyone in the industry who's the boss at using new techs. It's going way further in the emergent gameplay than most AAA. The amount of dynamic things is insane.

To me it feels like the true succesor to Mario64. A game filled to the beim with Gameplay Option that isn't afraid of letting players chose how to solve Puzzles or how to approach the game

French accented maybe. People always seem to focus on England for fairy tales but France created a butt load and of course the Germans did too. But for whatever reason we always imagine them being British centered in our depictions.

Why would character who only speak English do so in a foreign accent?

Not to mention finding good voice actors for the job would be way more hassel than it's worth. Either you get native english speakers putting on fake accents or you have to find enough French or German or whatever actors willing to record hundreds of lines in English and do so intelligibly.

The British accent was the perfect choice. The series is High Fantasy-inspired, and the best way to invoke that in the English-speaking world is to use an accent from the British Isles, not a continental one. But keep in mind that Zelda(?) or whomever is talking might not be the only voiced character and there might be other accents too, perhaps even for different parts of the realm. Pretty happy with the decision to use a British voice actress, however. That's the accent I always imagined the series in, and I'm not from Britian. It just works.

My favorite thing about this game is the level of interactivity with the environment. I don't know if I've ever seen an open world game with this level of response to the players actions in the world. Just little things like chopping down a tree to create your own bridge or scaling a mountain through the new climbing mechanic all culiminate into creating a really immersive experience.

This Zelda isnt just any zelda game, its not even in the same league in hype levels and gamer reception compared to WW, TP & SS.

Its so huge, there's so much freedom with the physics and mechanics of the game, they broke so many nintendo game design barriers that previous zelda games stuck to.

And, i think many gamers got this feeling..

Miiverse is going to be overrun with half-naked Link's and the Fire Rod, isn't it?

GameXplain has a new video up with more gameplay and commentary/interview with Nate from the localization team if anyone's interested.

Great video! Here's the link for those interested.

Nate confirms ability upgrades, and also hints that the spirit orbs are used in a very "Zelda-like way"

I wonder if that means that there will be a shop with runes/Zelda items (hookshot, beetle, spinner, etc.) where you have to trade spirit orbs for those items or upgrades.

This reminds me so much of Super Mario 64, not in the way that it plays but in the way that it could well change things for future games. So much about it looks like it's going to be so good.

The only real negative I have about the game is that this is the first time in a Zelda game that I just don't like the art style.

I don't think I'll buy the Wii U version knowing that there's an NX version on the way at some point, I just need to see a new 3D Mario running on the NX to persuade me to hand over money for a new console.

Gamexplain has a bunch, one which was posted just above. I know ign has some too

EDIT: the video from Projared changed my mind a lot. god its crazy beautiful this game.

thanks just noticed :) but its youtube, so shit quality. Need Gamersyde stuff. anything available anywhere else or download on some site?

So here's ProJared playing the demo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY0i9OL96-E

He zooms out the map and actually starts scrolling up and you can see just how goddamn massive the map really is.

It's incredible.

And the map was zoomed in actually has a lot of details.

EDIT: Stamina upgrades also confirmed.

These ProJared videos are actually some of the best I have seen at conveying just how awesome it is to play this game. With his added commentary, you can really see how much there is to do at every turn. Every stretch of the Plateau seemed to be filled with unique encounters, environmental interactions, treasures, puzzles, etc. And then each of those can be tackled in a variety of different ways. It's really one of the most compelling open-world experiences right from the outset.

In each of my demos, I ran off in a completely different direction, and had a completely unique experience. Everyone I watched playing on the show floor had their own personalized experiences with the game. In this game, we truly will create our own Legend that is unlike that of anyone else. This is the true strength of the world that Nintendo seems to have crafted in this title, no two playthroughs will ever be the same.

It already feels like this game is going to be incredible fodder for Let's Plays and Streams, as there promises to be so many distinct gameplay scenarios waiting for people to discover at their own speed. I can't wait to see what the future holds for this game. It's maybe the most ambitious thing Nintendo has ever done.
