Zelda Wii U - Recap of 5 hours gameplay stream

I haven't seen much of all the streams and gameplay videos because I want to get to the game knowing as little as possible, but from what I could see, whenever a pair of enemies like bokoblins come together and attack in certain areas the game seems to suffer frame drops... could anyone who played the demo at the showfloor confirm if this is the general case when battling multiple enemies at once or these drops are only occasional?

Frame drops were pretty abundant in the demo, I felt like. It was the worst in heavily forested areas when battling multiple enemies. This was the roughest part of the game and the main aspect where it felt like an NX port would be a huge improvement. The game was really beautiful in most other respects and ran fine in the more open areas even with multiple enemies. The trees really seem to be taxing for whatever reason.

Great video! Here's the link for those interested.

Nate confirms ability upgrades, and also hints that the spirit orbs are used in a very "Zelda-like way"

I wonder if that means that there will be a shop with runes/Zelda items (hookshot, beetle, spinner, etc.) where you have to trade spirit orbs for those items or upgrades.

This game is so exciting to watch. I'm really glad to see Nate is still around. He was the secret best thing about the first trreehouse, but I think his open salt really made them pull him out of the spotlight.

No bald cap? Lies!
Why would character who only speak English do so in a foreign accent?

Not to mention finding good voice actors for the job would be way more hassel than it's worth. Either you get native english speakers putting on fake accents or you have to find enough French or German or whatever actors willing to record hundreds of lines in English and do so intelligibly.

I never said it was easy or that they should necessarily do it. But would be a nice change of pace. Also I think you vastly overestimate the difficulty in finding actors with a french accents, or others accents, especially for a game that would only have a handful of actors at most with a fairly small amount of dialogue. If a game like DAI can have dozens of voiced characters with thousands of lines with varying European accents I think Nintendo could manage to fine 5 or 6 quality actors to do a few hundreds lines.

Thanks for the answer!

I'm not sure about how much they can optimize the WiiU version to polish this aspect, which leaves me doubtful about wich version of the game to choose (assuming that the NX one will be technically superior).

I really like the monster designs in this game, and the gif of Calamity Ganon is the icing on the cake for me.
Yeah, after the ugly enemies from the previous two games, these new ones are a big step up

I was disappointed to see a bokoblin on that desert area. What the hell it's was doing there?
Hope that's not the bokoblin everywhere approach from Skyward.

I like TP one.

Am I the only one that thinks that Midna is quite the hornbat..? In Twilight Princess when you first wake up as the wolf you get quite a good look at her nice arse. Well I wouldn't kick her out lol.

Maybe I need to get out more... :eek:/

One other great thing about her is that if you end up going out with her, because of her small impy form, any homemade porn videos are going to make you look hung like a fucking horse lmfao.

Yup. I need to get out A LOT more (

The bosses were also pretty great
(with only 1 exception)

The rest of the designs were also quite great with some of my favorite being the Dragons, the Kiwkis and the Loftwings. Meh, I am still sad that the Zoras were not present during the events of Skyward Sword =/
unless those aquatic creatures were some kind of pre-Zora race

Shit, took me a second to remember.

Never again.

The only well designed normal bosses in SS are Koloktos and Moldarach. The big cyclops meatball and the cyclops squid belong in Monsters Inc, and I've never been more disappointed in a creature design than when the Imprisoned was first fully revealed.

best Zelda design, will never be bested
Nah, boring waifu bait.

Still 9 months though, The optimization process should be beginning soon. Nintendo are pretty serious with their solid frames in their mainline games

can someone point to me a confirmation of normal dungeons in the game? Aside from the enormous amount of shrines, there will be normal dungeons in the game?

they still got a load of time to optimize

ffxv was a mess that ran at like 20fps for all the platinum demo but now the boss demo they showed was a solid 30fps

I know it's technically the TP design but I think Smash 4 is the best Zelda's ever looked imo.

Too bad this lovely model was wasted on a terrible character.

You remember this gif where Chiko throws the sword and then picks it up with the magnet move and tries to hit the guardian with it?
jf8y45N.gif

My friend and I had beaten the rock golem the day before, so we wanted to get to this area to defeat a guardian. I found the place, but regardless of how many arrows and weapons I had, I couldn't seem to do enough damage and knew I wouldn't be able to beat it before the time ran out. My friend decided to go explore the area in his game, and he found a giant metal door down in a ditch near the end of the plateau. Using the magnet move, he picked it up, hauled it over to the guardian, and, hiding behind the wall, bashed it over the guardian's head over and over until it died. I followed suit, opting to whack the door horizontally back and forth into the guardian (it kinda ended up looking like that middle finger gif that swirls around the guy's face). I wish we had gotten footage of it. It was hilarious. And awesome!

wow I barely understand what you're talking about but I think I'm gonna hold on to my Wii U

Koloktos was fucking immense. From the music, the "holy shit he's got feet", the "HOLY SHIT SO MANY SWORDS" to the "HOLEFOEFMOEWFM I CAN PICK UP THE SWORDS". Everything was damn awesome.

Koloktos is the icing in that beautiful, delicious cake that is Ancient Cistern.

One of the best dungeons of any Zelda game, IMHO.

Yeah, this is my favorite Zelda design. Distant, regal, and sort of fierce looking. I think Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf should form a visual trichotomy, and I think TP's designs did that best.

The spoiler text is confirmed.

Yeah, but it was too easy and too linear. I hope the new Zelda has just as well designed dungeons, but this time with more complexity. Thats my only hope for the dungeons, as well as amazing memoryable, catchy and atmospheric music of course.

Not sure if people have confirmed or denied this yet, but I can sort of speak to the whole 'freeze a thing in stasis, apply momentum/trajectory, get up on top... wheeeeeee?'

I walked in to Nintendo NY today, as I often do, to just watch some people play through the two demos (I had my glorious time with the game on Tues, managed to kill one of those grounded guardians! :D) and get streetpasses and such. I get up there and they are in between demo appointments and a Nintendo rep is getting some time in the first open-world (non story) demo. We get the small talk out of the way, he's played the thing for several hours at this point during the week. I ask him about the riding-the-stasis object thing and his eyes widened immediately. He had to try this but realized he only had about 8-9 minutes left in the demo session. He managed to barely get there (a very fun and tense story in and of itself) and thus far I can say that results are inconclusive.

He got to the boulder outside of the stasis trial shrine, froze it, whapped it just a few quick times with the sledge hammer, climbed up top aaaaaaaand the boulder flew out from under Link and link dropped down to the ground (sorry I didnt get video), queue 'Thanks for Playing'. HOWEVER, the momentum and trajectory he applied was almost purely out in front of him, virtually no upward motion. Pretty sure there's some sort of a sweeping upward strike with the hammer and part of a combo. I suggested that if he gets another crack at it, he should try two things: apply more upward launch to the boulder before getting on, or much more importantly, apply a bunch of outward kinetic energy then grab on and start climbing but dont get up on top of the boulder. REMAIN LATCHED ON TO THE SIDE. he said he wouldnt get a chance for a few hours but he was looking forward to it. I imagine that, similar to when that rock mini boss dude does a violent attack motion and link is climbing it, you'll just lose grip and get thrown off the object as it flies away, but he has to try damnit!

Here's the thing though, we created an extremely fun and tense mini-adventure in the context of the time-limited task. He was by the cliff face that you'd need to climb to get to the shrine. He quickly gathered some rushrooms and stemella shrooms, cooked them up, chopped down the tree, crossed the small chasm, ate his speed increase skewer, started climbing and scaled the damn cliff in one go eating both of his stamina regeneration skewers along the way! He entered the shrine (skip cutscene), dashed through the shrine in record time, (cutscene skip), and had just enough time to experiment.

This game is truly going to have players authoring their own unique adventures at every turn, and I can easily see instances of the game setting you out on time sensitive tasks naturally without this specific case of a ticking clock demo.

GUYS WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO FOR ~9 MONTHS!?!?!

I think we're gonna need Link's cryo-stasis chamber... dear god that's an awesome story.

That's the first thing i thought about the Stasis power and i think it makes sense for the programing to limit the player in that respect.

i was also thinking about the possibility of using Stasis with the Ice Blocks created out of water to turn them into projectiles or as an ice vehicle. Can imagine a boss fight scenario above shallow water where you can form ice blocks to launch them with Stasis hitting the boss.

Going back to Stasis Riding, what i could totally see is Nintendo allowing it in a more controlled environment such as a Dungeon or Shrine. Basically have machinery that would behave like Stasis Catapults, Link accumulates energy into them and then he can ride them. Or something like a cable cart.

So here's ProJared playing the demo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY0i9OL96-E

He zooms out the map and actually starts scrolling up and you can see just how goddamn massive the map really is.

It's incredible.

And the map was zoomed in actually has a lot of details.

EDIT: Stamina upgrades also confirmed.
So in his second video about the shrine.. did he say any dog based amiibo will become a companion for link? Duck hunt dog, KK slider??

Listen around 1:50 with wolf link

true true, or by virtue of upgrading your climbing skill you also upgrade link's ability to hold on to surfaces?
