No fucking way.I have no idea if this is legit, but apparently they are taping over boxed to remove the online label
Haha what a mess.

List? We need a timeline IMO.
I guess the whole of the entire community could organize to go to one specific spot and then they would find that they weren't all there at the same time. That would be ridiculous.
You can’t build because that encourages you to set down roots, there’s no multiplayer (encountering another player would be more akin to Journey, perhaps, and is expected to be an incredibly rare event) because multiplayer encourages people to cluster and stay
If anything, this should teach people to keep their hype in check. The devs kept hammering the point that meeting someone else was incredibly unlikely. Of course, it happens on the first day of the game's release, haha.
My problem with this explanation is that, from a development standpoint, it makes no logical sense
They've been billing this game as having quintillions of planets and the chances of meeting someone being miniscule. So they're putting all this crazy hardware infrastructure and development overheard into a feature that has an infinitely small chance of being used to begin with, and then making the chance even smaller by limiting the number of players you even have a possibility of meeting with. It doesn't make sense. Why even bother? If this is actually how it is I can't imagine 99% of players will ever meet another player. Why devote development time and resources to such a useless feature? It would make much more sense to have minimal data being stored for each online user (say, User "X" is in "Y" system), and if two players happen to be in said system then put them in a lobby and start doing more advanced computations as necessary.
I'm much more on board with the possibility that there are server issues due to the demand.
This whole thing is ridiculous though, I don't understand why they can't just come out and definitively say if multiplayer is a thing or not, no more of this "well the chances are super small!" crap. It wouldn't be hard for them to clear the air.
When you really think about it, There is really no character model. How could you even see each other if this doesn't exist.
The animation on the way you enter your cockpit, no hand model on your weapons and no hands on your cockpit controls.
lol
What would meeting people even add to the game? Having some rando tagging along won't make or break your experience.
So when Sean answers the question "can you play with your friends," apparently his "yes" doesn't mean anything?
2014:
2016:
No, it means you can, but the odds of actually finding them are ridiculously difficult and rare.
I don't have any sympathy for the team; they're reaping what they sowed. They should have been forthright with exactly what you can do in the game instead of pussyfooting around with details. They purposely allowed rampant speculation among fans and media just to hype their game up. If they had a lick of sense they would have seen where that decision would lead them.
Which of course has no bearing on the lack of multiplayer at present- which is consistent with Sean saying that while you can meet your friends it doesn't mean you'll instance together. They just released patch notes saying you'll be able to build.
Just saying.
..because it is instanced.
from the gameinformer interview:
Q:It will be so surreal to see another person walking around on a planet.
A:We keep talking about Jack's dad from Lost, basically just to see them in the distance. Like, Did I? What?
Q:The player characters look different than anything else you'll see?
A:Yeah.
Q:Will that be the first time you have any idea what you'd look like?
A:Yeah.
Qo you have that model built out?
A:Yes.
No, it means you can, but the odds of actually finding them are ridiculously difficult and rare. Back in '14 he already said if everyone was in the same spot you still wouldn't be able to see everyone- you've never had the ability to pick and choose who instance in your bubble.

But two DID find eachother were in the same spot and didnt see eachother...
How were so many people buying this game for the multiplayer aspects? The game hasn't been advertised like that at all. Unless I'm missing something the only information we have regarding multiplayer comes from interviews where the interviewer brought it up and Sean qualified his answers by saying that meeting anyond is incredibly unlikely.
They didn't find each other though. They went to the same place, but again you don't get to decide who enters your lobby.

Dude. The quote in the op is from 2 weeks ago. He doesn't say shit about instances or servers.

And technically you can.
He tweeted yesterday that the game doesn't have multiplayer.
He said several times before (including on national TV) that the game has multiplayer.
At this point it doesn't really matter if it's a bug or not. We have his words.
We can do this forever...so you can play with your friends? But you dont get to choose when...and its extremely unlikely?

I think the two on twitch are gonna give it another go in the next 20 minutes or so, I imagine they're gonna keep trying to sync up.
One of them even bought PS+ so that they both had it, in case that was a variable.
The point is, the "two people in the same spot" issue is s-o-l-v-e-d. Now it's the instancing problem, and we're gonna see a lot more people over the coming days trying to meet up, and if it doesn't happen, that's going to be disappointing.
People meet up in Dark Souls on purpose without much difficulty. And from a technical standpoint, a location in NMS is just 3 digits. If you detect two players in the same "section" of galaxy, you can throw them in the same instance.
The two Twitch streamers are at the same place again and they are still not seeing each other: http://multitwitch.tv/psytokat/thesadcactus
So Dr, let's say that No Man's Sky *DOESN'T* have this. Could they patch it in? Basically instancing?
This thread is amazing, even for GAF standards. It's like a gigantic circle jerk echo chamber for people who were never going to buy NMS in the first place.
I thought it was super hard to find the same planet?
Either you can meet people or you can't.
It's possible right now that there is actually no multiplayer code to handle two people meeting. The press leading up, the devs have consistently answered "yes" to people being able to see each other if they're in the same spot. So it remains to be seen.
There's been numerous articles and interviews that center on this not being multiplayer or cooperative.
But 2 weeks ago he said it was both single and multi. Is Sean a schizophrenic? Why the mixed signals?
Shouldnt he have mentioned this when he was asked "can you play with your friends" shouldnt he have said... "Not really but hypothetically its possible" why the lack of clarity?
No defending that. He outright says the chances of running into another player is small because of the size of what we're trying to do. He straight up lied about this, and he deserves all the backlash he's getting right now.
