What's both of your's take on these numbers? Note, the ASP unit price does not reflect bundled games, accessories, giftcards, etc.

I think both companies are in it to make money and one company is doing a hell of a lot better job than the other.

My take? It's pretty obvious that Sony are making more money than MS on selling consoles, even though Microsoft managed to outsell Sony this month. But some of the posts in this thread are trying too hard.

Are people really still bothered about monthly sales now lol? The race has been won, next up Neo vs Scorpio, may the best mid gen console win! ;D

Congrats to MS. All jokes aside, I'm always impressed when they win a month. This whole generation has been been an uphill battle for them.

Why do so many American's hate Microsoft?
This is subjective, but Microsoft could well be the most influential US company the world has ever seen.

Sony were very late to the Console market because Sega and Nintendo dropped a bag of balls.

And just for balance, I bought a PS1 in 1996, a PS2 in 2001, a PS4 in 2014 and a PS3 in 2015. I have them all and love them.

(I am a UK resident and I also love Microsoft for what they have given the world, so far)

In 100 years when we look back, what have they done short of a poorly designed OS cash cow that only exists because they choked out their competition in the 90s with shady business practices and have the corporate and consumer PC locked down ever since?

These days, Microsoft are not in the top 5 interesting tech companies, much less most influential the world has ever seen.

Oh boy. Businesses around the world depend on Microsoft products. Office, Sharepoint, Windows, SQL Server, etc.

They invest heavily in fighting spam and work with the government to weed out child pornography across the internet.

Speaking of the internet, every single website uses AJAX to present interactive content without page refreshes. Microsoft invented and popularized it.

Whether you like it or not, Microsoft is massively influential, and still does a lot of interesting stuff via MS Research.

the only reason I got one is because of the ridiculous firesale they had, like others have said.

like 270 for the thing + 6 games and 70 dollars in gift cards and an extra controller is actually stupid.

Also I traded it in at the beginning of the month and got a slim. also with like 4 free games

Like I said, with them giving the console away you would HOPE they would win. What is funny and extremely hypocritical is that NOW sales matter, not the MAUs. MS fans have been like little deprived dogs starving under the table for awhile now. Let them enjoy some leftover hamburger
This is wonderful

What a ridiculous question, considering America is where Microsoft is liked the most.

But maybe it has something to do with poor business practices dating back over a decade that continue to this day. Dunno. Just a wild theory.

Listen, I love Sony and have been playing Playstation consoles since 1996, but I don't get the hate that Microsoft gets on here.

Are most posters from Europe?

IMO, the original xbox was superb and so was the 360 and now the xbone.
All are great consoles.

PS1/PS2/PS3 and PS4 are all brilliant too, as is the SNES, Megadrive and Dreamcast.

I, for one, am shocked that the first home console to get price cut harder than Wii U would be the best-selling console during the month of said price cut.

To be honest they will probably win August too because of the Xbox One S release.

I picked up the 2TB version and it's a sweet machine. A huge improvement over the original Xbox One design. Most places around me in SF are either sold out or low stock.

The 500GB and 1TB versions are still not released, but releasing later this month, which will only add to the numbers.

I agree, I know Microsoft dropped the ball a few years ago with the original Xbox One announcement, but they have done a huge turn around with their Xbox department.

If you look at game sale numbers IN THE USA, most game sales between the Xbox One and PS4 are pretty close (some outselling the PS4). Of course elsewhere in the world the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One greatly, but I never play on international servers, so I could care less. Also Microsoft does not really care since their main focus is the USA and a bit of the UK.

I own both systems BTW, so no fan boying here.

No one tell that poster about Europe. They probably couldn't handle the stranglehold Sony has had on Europe for years.

(Besides in the UK where it's a battlefield)

Doesn't matter how much they change first impressions are the most important for some.

Nice job MS. A few of my friends recently picked up Xbox Ones, we've been having fun playing games on LIVE together.

I think most of the MS haters are going to forget everything once they see the Xbox Scorpio vs PS4 Neo Digital Foundry graphical comparisons. :)

Yeah there's bound to be a lot of hypocrisy. What do you really expect tho? Sony die hards to accept that power is really important to them and the Scorpio makes them feel like less of a man? Doubtful.

Same thing with Xbox fans.

Power isn't everything.

I wonder how many more times you will repeat this.

Power is NOT everything, but its a pretty BIG thing. When all multiplatform titles play better on 1 versus the other, it DOES matter to the gaming crowd.

With that said...
Power was just 1 of many things MS screwed up with this console.

The only thing more ridiculous than the Microsoft usual suspects hi-fiving themselves over a 10k win, is the Sony usual suspects trying to downplay any kind of Xbox win.

Console warriors will never not be an embarrassment.

Most people around the world did not pick PS4 over XB1 because it was marginally more powerful. Maybe some people in America and the UK, but mostly, they picked it because MS is not a global brand in general, and PS offers that global flavor. The reason why MS lost America and the UK specifically was because it fucked itself over with horrible business moves and generally cost them a ton of good will, in addition to launching a 100$ more expensive platform that was less powerful. Notice how power is only a single element in there.

So, in this case, when we talk about "MS haters", we should be clear that we are not talking about actual haters, but people simply uninterested in what MS is selling as a product.

Your first paragraph is spot-on.

Yeah, they're not the consumer focused company they were in the 90s, but they're essential in enterprise.

I use so many great MS products at work, and they continue to expand in that sector with this gs like Booking etc

Main reason why it was my preferred system growing up.

Halo had made me a loyalist.

Hey! This is good news! Didn't really feel it with xb1 and traded it in. But overall I'm glad to see the direction they are taking! Positive steps!

If the console has appeal price is probably bigger. And I agree power isn't everything.

Power can be important, yet the most successful console of its respective generation is rarely the most powerful of them. Psx, Ps2, Wii etc...

The conversation should not be about being most powerful versus not being most powerful.

Its should be(and generally is) about whether or not power itself determines success, which it does not. Every other factor does more.

Price, brand appeal, exclusive content, ecosystem preference, marketing. All of these matter on a far larger scale.

So, someone saying that Scorpio is somehow going to make MS dominate at this point in time is simply being foolish. So is assuming that because MS wins a single month, it should be shouted to the rooftops.

I don't deny MS's win, but considering how weak the month is in general for both consoles, and the fact that Nintendo won with the 3DS, its not all that big a win to have its own thread personally.
