Hajime Tabata: "Currently no plans to reveal more info about Versus XIII"

Honestly that's the only thing I'm really disappointed we're not getting in XV anymore. Did we ever get a real explanation for why Regis was changed?

I'm still amused Regis's name was original symbolic, since he was the "king" of the family, and now it quite literally translates as "King King".

So very, very on the nose.

He can be an exception. He was saying way back in 2011 that his next game was going to be way more game play than story with less emphasis on cut scenes. =P

Seriously, I can't think of anything shown in MGSV previews that didn't end up in the game. The wait itself sucked, but that's not the issue for me. It's the cuts and changes.
I'm mainly referencing Death Stranding. A short video of vague nothingness before he's even chosen an engine to work on let alone started work on the game, and his fans still went wild for it. I'm braced for three more E3's at least of varying gameplay trailers where Gaf analyses the cuts, changes, and buttocks downgrades.

That kind of statement tells you how much has really changed.

The game has little to do with the original VersusXIII concepts, apart from sharing some visual designs, surface concepts and names here and there.

That means it would fit right into IGN's article on the front of the website: "The 13 Biggest Video Games That Never Came Out"

Rest in Peace, random video game character I've seen a couple images of and have no reason whatsoever to feel a connection to. We'll never forget.

For a company that went with names like Lightning, Snow, Hope, and Fang last time, Regis is pretty advanced for them =P

For all the people clamoring for Stella Nox Fleuret in some form, I'm not sure you really want Tabata and his team to have a go at her character

are you kidding me (directed at the quote, not you). Fucking ridiculous and tone deaf.

I will never forget that 2011 trailer. It made me believe Versus XIII was going to be the best game on PS3. It's sad that the Versus dream is dead, but at least we get to see the remnants of it in a new mainline title.

I do find it weird that Versus XIII - named so because it juxtaposed with the 13 mainline titles in the form of a darker story and action RPG elements - was rebranded into the 15th mainline title lol.

Frankly, I think he's annoyed that people are still asking about Versus XIII despite already explaining what happened to Versus XIII. I would be annoyed too. Versus XIII is dead and FFXV was created out of its remains. MOVE ON PEOPLE. I like getting a peek behind the curtain as much as the next person but there's no real end game to this probing for answers about why Versus XIII was canned and what stuff from that game made it into XV.
Maybe a build of Versus XIII will leak one day but even then based on everything we've ever heard about Versus XIII it sounds like it was barely ever even something resembling a playable game. At some point the Versus XIII we were introduced to was scrapped and it sounds like they basically started over. The game became something so dramatically different that they eventually renamed it.

Their names at least were either symbolic or ironic, but Regis's name is as literal as you can get. He is the king. His name actually means, quite literally, "king".

It's like naming Noctis's actual name as "Prince" or naming your White Mage as "Healer".

Hmmm. Didn't know they said that, I'm not saying necessarily that Cindy is "too sexy" (I'd say that her design is actually too generic and illogically over-exposed to be "sexy"), but the fact that they seem to be finding a "contradiction" between wanting a female character's design to be a bit more tasteful, and also wanting a female party member is somewhat odd. As if they think the reason people would want female party members is to see "sexy" designs, and not to have a variety of interesting characters of all backgrounds.

Considering Final Fantasy has typically had parties with both male and female members, it is very strange for them to have not seen the reasoning behind fans wanting female party members. For XV, and Versus XIII for that matter, it seems like it was always the plan for it just to be guys, so that's fine for it to stay that way, but if they can't think of any other reasons why Final Fantasy fans would want a party with female members in it besides eye-candy, that is a bit worrying for Luna and other women in this game.

I don't actually want to say I have an issue with attractive/"sexy" character design (done well, Cindy isn't for example), and am not calling for censorship of XV, just saying that if they don't see a reason for women to exist in the game besides being pretty, that's a little weird, especially coming from Final Fantasy.

I'd see no point in talking about a nonexistent game to give more reason for people to be like "wow that sounds like a better/worse game than we're getting!"

If they do release info on this I'd bet they'll talk about it a few years after ffxv is out.

But wasn't he always the king? It's just that in vXIII he was portrayed more as a Yakuza boss than a traditional "sits on a throne and does king stuff" king. I definitely prefer the earlier version of him for this reason, as it set him apart from the typical kings in fantasy settings and made him seem like a king from the modern world, which fit well with the "fantasy based on reality" motif. I think his name was always redundant, it just wasn't as blatantly generic because his design and personality didn't seem so cookie-cutter.

One has to wonder what did Nomura do during all those years he was directing Versus XIII...

He was directing KHDDD at the time mostly. Vs13 was more concepts and pre-dev/ early dev more than it was a full production at the time. Not to mention the 14 fiasco basically made all other internal projects halted until ARR happened.

MGSV and VersusXIII are the two "what if's?" of gaming. Kojima didn't get the chance to complete his vision and Nomura got kicked off his own project. Insane I tell you... At the very least I hope Nomura can use Noctis in future KH games.

i still feel weird seeing the new king regis compared to the king regis we got in the E3 2013 trailer.

This new king regis looks too old to be noctis father, looks more like a grandpa lol

Well, they did explain that he's aging faster than normal for plot-reasons.

No, Tabata says Stella doesn't make sense for the new story so they made a new heroine.

But why though, why not just say "Luna is the evolution of Stella" or "Her name and look were updated."

Hell when Luna was first revealed I thought it was Stella until I found out later, they look very similar already.

I don't care anymore, just give gamers a wholesome experience in XV.

At least we can all finally move on to the future after 10 years of Fabula Nova Crystallis nonsense. Christ...

There's a reason for that.

Because he would be lying, like he was caught doing initially.

There's no point in talking about Versus right now. I can only see it giving more things for Versus faithful to complain about. Maybe in the future as a documentary or something, to show what was going on during one of Square's darkest times.

MGSV and VersusXIII are the two "what if's?" of gaming. Kojima didn't get the chance to complete his vision and Nomura got kicked off his own project. Insane I tell you... At the very least I hope Nomura can use Noctis in future KH games.

Xeno is a bigger what if for me. Gears being part 5 of a 6 part story, which Saga was going to retell. Neither Gears nor Saga ever finished the way it wanted to. Too ambitious of a project, but I would have loved to experience it all, no matter how long it took to complete.

Tabata is basically Lebron James chasing the ghost of Nomura's (Jordan) Versus XIII. He will never win the versus faithful or the general public. It's a losing battle so it's wise to not talk about it.

Everything we sort of knew about Versus XIII

- Main character: Noctis Lucis Caelum (Still in XV)
- Main female character: Stella Nox Fleuret (Sort of not in XV, sort of)
- 3 party members that were best friends with the main (Still in XV)
- King Regis (Still in XV, but now he doesn't wear a suit and has a derpy face)
- Game starts in Insomnia with a full blown invasion. Similar to the opening of FFVII. (Not in XV, but this was reworked into Kingsglaive)
- A fantasy based on Reality (Still in XV)
- Noctis's royal family was based off the Yakuza (not in XV)
- Insomnia worship death (not in XV)
- A Venice style city (Still in XV)
- Niflhiem are the main baddies (Still in XV)
- KH combat (not in XV, but still not turn based)
- Controllable party members (not In XV)
- Noctis can see someone's death or their soul expire or some shit like that (Still in XV)
- Noctis eyes turn red (Still in XV)
- Noctis and crew wearing Roen clothing (Still in XV)
- Engine blade (Still in XV)
- Warping (Still in XV)
- Dark tone (Not in XV as far as we know)
- Road trip theme (Still in XV)
- Awesome trailers (Not in XV)

Rest in Peace, random video game character I've seen a couple images of and have no reason whatsoever to feel a connection to. We'll never forget.

I don't get it either.

I do get the complaints about the shift in tone between Versus XIII and XV, however I don't care THAT much. Although the world of Versus XIII looked really cool and I'm sorry not to be able to experience it, the hook in Versus XIII that grabbed me the most was "Final Fantasy in a modern setting with real-time combat". I'm still getting that, so I'm happy.

Stella will be the main character in a future ff game. square must know there's a Stella fan base that has somehow formed from the years of development.
I have no personal attachment to Stella other than the fact I prefer the design over Luna but nothing to complain about.

It'd be wise to not let your headcanon get into the way of your enjoyment of the game coming out.

For what? So we can complain harder for the game that we never got from Nomura?
No, cause I wanna know all I can know about that game. I'm way past the complaining phase, I stopped caring for XV once we found out it would be Versus XIII. I just wanna know the story behind the game, the characters, scenarios, everything that's gone. Like I said, a lot of people waited for that game and it'll never come out, fair shit happens, throw us a bone and let us read about everything. I'd even pay for a tell all.

Is he referring to the party/invasion from 2011 trailer? the thing that looked more epic and exciting than everything we have seen about XV?

He's referring to the idea that following someone else's vision would have resulted in a compromised development process, so instead of making sure to do this or that thing Versus XIII did, he and his team were given license to go in their own direction.

Not a knock on Nomura or his vision for Versus XIII.
