Shenmue Community Thread | Still lookin' for sailors

Interesting question about the loading screens. I could see players getting tired of them if they're present when quickly popping in and out of a shop, I know I used to.

I don't think they'll purposefully implement loading screens just to adhere to the old aesthetic, but I can definitely see an overlay as you enter an area happening without actually loading.

Getting excited for April's update. I think we're getting very close to seeing some new models.

Can't believe this was rendered on the dreamcast over 16 years ago.

I've copied a complete gameplay walkthrough video to my phone.

... But Cedric already said at MAGIC in February that they have no plans to show anything at E3 right now, it's too premature to be showing in that capacity.

I think they'll have something, but it won't be a gameplay demo. Next year though, maybe.

Finally got my account approved!

ShenmueGuru here, also Peter over at the Dojo. Been long overdue to keep the hype going on the Gaf.

It was a pleasure to interview Yu in Monaco, and good to see the video was posted here. I know some people are not happy with some of the answers Yu gave, but time will tell in terms of things like the logo and loading screens etc.

Anyone here ever visit Yokosuka? It's something I've always wanted to do, and now that the weather is getting better and I only live an hour and a half away I want to do it soon.

I thought you were going to say you live overseas and wanted to visit Yokosuka, but you're just an hour away! Do it! :)

Oh it's not a question of if, just wondering if anyone else has done it. I'll probably go this weekend or next if the weather is good enough.

It's always something I've put off when I visited Japan as a tourist before, so I wanna do it soon or else I'll keep procrastinating :p

Not sure if this was talked about here, but I was scrolling through the Dojo's Twitter feed when I saw this amazing track retweeted from Shenmue composer Ryuji Iuchi.

"village and waterside in the forest"

"private demo music for that demo movie's scene."

I think it's pretty much confirmed this is a demo track for Shenmue III. Possibly Bailu Village's theme too.

It's pretty amazing, and has a lot of Shenmue's musical hallmarks.

I bet it's the fishing theme. It could be the Bailu town theme too though. Exciting to think about!

It's the end of the month. Update time is approaching. :D

We're also about to cross the first 10k threshold reaching since hitting $6.6 million. The fight to $6.7 million starts here!

Double post, but-

I was watching Ip Man 3 on Netflix (during an incredible stairwell scene), and suddenly got very excited when I remembered Yu talking about some of Shenmue III's fights taking place in confined spaces and showcasing Southern Chinese martial arts styles, like Wing Chun.

I think from my memory Lan Di's model was the most detailed in-game model in the original. Also according to the artist it went through many revisions before Suzuki gave his stamp of approval.

You can actually see a variation of the model in the Saturn video with spikey hair in the front. I know he was originally meant to have his hair down per the below character art-

sou_02.jpg

They couldn't simulate moving hair properly at the time. I've always envisioned in future games once he fights Ryo his bun would come unloose and you would fight wild Lan Di :)

Hoping wing chun doesn't show up, but it likely will due to its immense popularity. If it does show up I hope it's not given TOO much prominence.

When Yu and Tak Hirai went to speak at that Chinese gaming conference, it was confirmed to be in the game. No idea in what form though. It could just be for the
Nanquan "Southern Fist" master Ryo meets in Chobu.

I personally don't mind it to be honest. I have a dream that as the mechanics in the combat system are evolved, you can switch styles and develop them via the skill tree system. Being able to switch on the fly would be very interesting. One minute you're playing offence using Hazuki Style with it's strong throws and kicks, and the next you're on the defence with Wing Chun with fast parries and barrage punches.

That won't happen because Hazuki style in its essence is already a mix of different styles.

For example, the underlining hint of 1 and 2's martial arts is that Ryo's father basically learned Bajiquan and other forms of Chinese martial arts. Elbow assault is in essence, a bajiquan move. Xiuying just gives you an updated version. One of the more interesting things is that unbeknownst to Ryo, when he was young and being trained, his father taught him bajiquan. It's why Xiuying's moveset looks so familiar.

It's very likely the first move he ever learned.

Remember, Ryo is Akira. Akira Yuki's martial art style is bajiquan. But Hazuki style is not "pure" baji because it also jujutsu, judo, and some other Japanese martial influences. Pit blow for example is a standard karate move. Looks like the move I saw performed when I scouted a Ryobu-Kai karate dojo.

Ryo's Hazuki style is called "jujutsu" but it really isn't because of its emphasis on strikes more than throwing. Ryo's style is very much like his fathers: an amalgamation of different styles combined into a cohesive whole. Hazuki style is essentially mixed martial arts. It's something a lot of Japanese and other martial artists were doing in the 80's and especially the 90's. Though the funny thing is that Kung Fu was never really a part of this mass martial arts exchange, and a large reason why it has stagnated since. Bruce Lee tried to do mixed martial arts and kung fu masters would treat him extremely badly because of it, for example. I think training specific styles would take away from Hazuki styles mma origins and the point of mixing Iwao and Ryo's shared lived experiences in the style that it is at this point in the games.

Hazuki style itself isn't "pure", so separating via style gets tricky.

If Wing Chun is in I want some evasion strikes. Fuck yes.

I also want *my* martial art, Jiu Jitsu, in. I don't care, make it work. ;_;

I highly suggest watching documentaries on Baji. It's fascinating.

Here's a documentary on it in Meng Cun (you should recognize this name). Meng Cun is a center of martial arts in China.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVogtTUpKeU

Then there's this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTxzd_LKIew

And this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsqc7gYDKHs

You should recognize the man in some of the videos. He took a picture with Yu and trained Suzuki-san. He was also the Bajiquan instructor used for Shenmue and Virtua Fighter iirc.

One detail I love about Shenmue.

If you watch the first documentary on Baji I posted, they say that it's told "a bajiquan practioner can shake the Earth with their shoulder or their feet." When we see Xiuying practice in II, it really does convey that she does just that. One of those small spiritual things you see occur in the series that has a basis in folk tall tales and rumor.

Cindi got banned? :(

Least it's probably temporary. Right before Kickstarter update time too.

So, any guesses on what we'll see? I'd say it's a 50/50 split between another conservative, low-info update, or a few new screens and information.

I won't be disappointed either way, but if they're holding back showing the game after four months since we last saw it at MAGIC, I won't expect we'll see it again this side of September.

Hope this is ok to post but my own website Pause Resume, conducted an interview with Shibuya Productions and Cedric Biscay, and while there isn't anything earth shattering in the interview, Cedric did mention that he and Yu Suzuki worked on a project before Shenmue III which never came to be.

We did push and ask if he could reveal what it was, but unfortunately they refused to comment. Thought some of the most ardent Shenmue fans would appreciate the interview :)

At the beginning, many issues were standing in the way, making the project almost impossible. So we decided to work together on another project. Honestly, I was still so happy to be working with Yu Suzuki even if it was not on Shenmue. But the other project was finally abandoned, unfortunately, which just coincided with a new, greater possibility to launch Shenmue 3. You know what happened next. The twists and turns of destiny…

Just read this. Cedric seems to be a stand up guy. I respect him for making his own company so much.

Yes, Kimono girls are quite real, and are in the American release of the game. Enjoyed encountering them on my last playthrough.

The game is so full of little aesthetic delights like that. Creates a special sense of mood, and wistful quality that evokes the inevitable passage of time. Very Japanese.

Forgot to say, but we've passed $300,000 raised via Slacker Backer campaigning. Thought I'd just mention that seeing how it's the 3rd.

jesus - crazy late on this, but man, this continues being fantastic.

To be fair no one thought this shit would ever happen. I gave up years ago. When I saw the forklift tweet I said "yeah fucking right" and laughed at the Shenmue fans who believed it would turn into anything. "Those guys are delusional and this always breaks hearts. It's time to give up." At that point, people had every right to not think it would ever happen. I was perfectly satisfied with just getting a Shenmue 1 and 2 HD.
