They're not just going to reveal the Direct out of nowhere for their cornerstone future product just like that without telling anyone lol. I want to watch it live-not some upload they throw in YouTube like the NX is some throw away system.

.......Why not? They announce directs out of nowhere all the time. The most amusing thing about these threads has been the navel gazing attempting to apply some kind of logic to it.

I don't like the obsession over compromising the primary single player ergonomics over some weird misplaced desire for two player local multiplayer huddling around a tiny screen.

Not only ergonomically poor but do you design the controls in single player to only use a single pad and four buttons, to accommodate two players?

Just get them to bring their own NX and play using a screen each, or buy a second controller for tv play

I dunno, it worked well for the Wii

I am still trusting in the French games blog saying Monday! They where correct on ps4pro. Even if it's direct reveal.

Tgs full reveal even if it's not normal for nintendo. There is still time for invites

Gameblog.fr said the week of the 12th, not the 12th specifically.

But I'm pretty sure we'd know by now if anything was coming before TGS, so I don't expect any news before the 19th, except a date if we're lucky.

Looks great, except I don't think the sticks and buttons will be directly on top of each other.

I'd also imagine they'll give the plus pad actual names, i.e. D-Left, D-Up, etc., like the C-Buttons on the N64.

Wii was like other consoles - you get a controller and for multiplayer your friend buys another controller

This is giving you a controller (two analog sticks, dpad, buttons) and then taking half of them away for multiplayer

January direct folks.

There is a chance that we will play The Last Guardian in its entirety 2 months before knowing anything about the NX?

I don't think so.

the comparison doesn't make sense but its fine to make them so that's that. Besides, I think you got my point

When will they announce a Direct? It would have to be Monday for a Tuesday direct. Wednesday is Pokemon and TGS is after that.

I would love to be wrong because I want the NX reveal, but the most I could see happening is a NX reveal announcement date coming Monday or Tuesday.

Hm, so there's little to no chance that they'll announce a November SpaceWorld to debut the NX, right? If they've already held it this August, I've totally forgotten.

As an option. I guarantee that isn't the only way/control method for multiplayer.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Here's a revised mockup based on Emily's information. It's tricky figuring out the start select home share button placement, I figured it would be needed on the controllers when they are separated. And putting the labels for them on the main unit instead of the controllers means they could be start / select for when its used as 1 and 2 player controllers. Or maybe used as additional action buttons, perhaps.

The pair on the left is for when playing in console mode 1 player. They function like a regular controller if you snap them together, or separate them for that Wii motion capability for games that need it.

Beautiful, unfortunately I'm afraid the launch color schemes won't be this beautiful.

They've done a great job with some of their E3 skits, but their TV commercials have been shiiiiiiiiet since Wii.

Though to be fair the initial Wii U ads are basically like the Wii ones, but with shittier music, a less compelling concept, and NSMBU instead of Wii Sports.
The Wii's commercials were great. They were clear, spot on, and to the point. The Wii U's marketing I think we can all agree was shit. Nintendo needs a clear message and focus with their marketing this time.

I think the ship has sailed for a TGS reveal. Not enough time from now till then to invite journalists for a preview event. Nintendo also isn't at TGS and it's mostly a japanese exclusive event so I doubt they care that much. Dont' recall much Nintendo news ever coming out of TGS.
The post makes sense, best to have the news week to yourself instead of sharing with Sony/Apple as was the 7th or other gaming news from TGS.

The wiimote was held and used differently.
In single hand mode sure, but it still got used in sideways NES style a lot. I do think the combination of curved and flat is awkward, though. Considering Nintendo's portables for the last quarter century and the wiimote all had very flat edges and even the Wii U Game Pad is pretty flat away from the rounded corners, I think MDave's mockups go too semicircular, like the child of an SNES and a Sony portable.

If it helps, I'm at least as confused writing it.

Well, maybe I'm just reading it wrong, but it reads to me like you're wondering about the chances of a SpaceWorld this year and allowing for the possibility that it may have already happened this year and you just somehow missed it. And this seems to ignore that SpaceWorld is a dead thing that hasn't happened in over 15 years now.

I feel like I just didn't go far enough back in the conversation to understand the joke.

Just to note; the press got to try out Super Mario Run (I saw Jose Otero from IGN tweet about it). Now did they do that at the Apple Event or did Nintendo organize something themselves?

Either way, did the press know ahead of time or did they find out at the same moment we did?

It'd be interesting if there was any advance notice and folks were that secretive to not hint of that at all. A Mario game of any kind for mobile (especially as part of Nintendo's DeNA mobile game initiative) would be big enough to hint at if they knew, I would think.

Maybe press already knew about Super Mario Run? Or knew they some kind of Nintendo interview coming for something atleast.

I had an idea where the NX had those Free-form screens for that 4 button layout and they would change images depending on how you angled the controller, and there was a tiny notch in the middle of the side of the controllers that let you take the stick and buttons out and flip them upside down for a symmetrical or asymmetrical layout of your own style.

But I'm not sure if those freeform displays could be used as buttons in that fashion.

I don't understand why you put the large borders left/right next to the screen. The speakers could just be on the back, even on the sides or top or bottom. The start/home/share/select text could just as easily be rotated 90°.

Or like this

1. For some reason, I remembered SpaceWorld being Nintendo's reason for regularly skipping the Tokyo Game Show. I vaguely recall Monster Hunter 3G and 4 being announced at a private Nintendo event just before TGS which had me a bit more confident that I wasn't mistaken.

2. The 3DS was apparently announced at a SpaceWorld-like event, to the point that a brief Google search of the subject had me reading statements that it had been announced at SpaceWorld. Like, it's in a list of consoles that were announced at SpaceWorld.

3. I saw the list, and for whatever reason, I assumed it was not exhaustive.

4. I am both distracted and sleep deprived, so I fully concede that I may be more stupid than usual.

The only problem of all this good looking and efficient mockups is that the real thing will probably be complete opposite of it. Clunky, big, etc, etc. Nintendo is king when it comes to product durability but in terms of delivering slick/modern looking hardware... not that much. Except Wii. Wii was a looker during it's golden years.

On the other hand, the Wii Mini looked like you could open it up and find a McChicken.

1) You are thinking of a special Nintendo 3DS event from September 2011. I think it was before TGS. Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter and others were announced during that event. Nintendo had to boost the system because the sales weren't that great.

2) The 3DS was announced in March 2010 via a press release by Nintendo mentioning the system would be shown for the first time at E3 2010.

3DS was announced by name in a pretty simple press release and then first shown at E3 2010, I remember that much.

What. Why don't I remember this. What is Wikipedia telling me then:

The systems that have been unveiled at the show series include the Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, 64DD, and Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo later held an event called Nintendo World 2011 in Tokyo from the January 8–10, 2011. The company gave the specific details on the Japanese launch of the Nintendo 3DS at this exhibition.[8]

Was this a thing that happened?

Press were already invited to the Apple event, I imagine Nintendo just had a preview event close by

I'm pretty sure that happened, yes, but "given further details" is different from "announced," which is what the other posters were talking about. Pretty sure that event was just a prep/hype/detail event for the Japanese launch. Which could be something NX will get prior to its launch.

Jose covers Nintendo, rather than Apple, though, I believe. #paging joseotero to see if he can tell us if he knew about it in advance....

Doesn't IGN have a SF office? I guess he probably was just told there would be a Nintendo interview opportunity at that time.

The only good thing about revealing the system is the fact that the game floodgates will finally open.

Can't wait to see that Pikmin 4 and Super Mario NX footage!!

Just listened to the new episode of NVC, and at the end of episode Jose Otero announced that he's going on vacation - and I could swear, and maybe this is (probably) just paranoia - but it sounded as if Jose, Peer and Brian were all acting like they know SOMEthing and were choosing their words very carefully discussing NX...

Not sure what sense it makes... but I have a feeling Jose knows what's up.
