Zelda: Breath of the Wild map size: 12x Twilight Princess, a tad smaller than XCX

The fact that FF XV has taken like 10 years being developed makes the map thing unimpressive. Now, Zelda BotW being a relatively newly developed game and having such a massive map is truly enchanting. Can't wait.

Really? Maybe that's a bit too big since we have no giant Mech to help the scale.

That said from the footage I've seen I don't think I'd be running out things to do any time soon.

All bumps of old threads suck unless they are accompanied by a link.
Well it's Zelda.

Nintendo will show all noobs how to make a perfect Open World Game <3 I hope Zelda BOTW has expansion like Elder Scrolls 4 does with even more land to explore! Also next Mario game needs to be open world! Mario Kart 9 toooooo

There is a point you reach where too big can be detrimental.

Yup, the overwhelming majority of open world games boast massive areas but are woefully thin on filling said space with decent content. It's really soured me on them and any developer going on about "our game is X times this other game". Oh, and as several people have already brought up: traversal becomes the main thing you do in these worlds because they're so fucking big.

Kid me would have eaten this up. Adult me with a job, upcoming school, wife and a backlog already... ouch.

I'll still play it. I finished The Witcher 3.

BotW is at least 5 years old. Certainly not new. Still pretty excited.

Only by using Roc's Feather though, right? Or when he runs off a ledge and auto-jumps.

Pretty much nothing is automated in this game. Not even jumping.

Anyway, if the game is about as dense as the Great Plateau overall, we'll be fine. The gameplay variety looks very strong between Combat, Climbing, Puzzle Solving with the engine, traversing using shield surfing and finding secrets, a little platforming here and there. I don't think your fingers will be resting for too long.

every time this thread gets bumped you guys break my heart.

Breath of fire R.I.P :(

Why are people picking on Zeldas open world?? Give me a break. Nintendo showed us a little demo. Open world games like this don't have to be full. Its got plenty of shrines and will have towns.

I kind of like the sparse nature of it so far.
I could see how some might find it boring but it seems like an actual world.
I'm sure there will be busier sections than what they showed though.

This game will be system-seller. And if it finally comes out on NX release...easy cash for Nintendo and the best console launch in history.
This game is the new OoT for next generation. It WILL sell NX systems easily. I can see it being a GOTG candidate.

I love it. It's nature and Link on his own fending for himself without knowing what's going on. Who knows how the towns will appear? Maybe we'll rebuild the world or jump in time to civilizations.

Considering that you can warp to activated shrines and towers, use a horse, and use whatever other forms of travel are in the game, traversal of this world should be a non-issue.

This map is going to be empty as hell, isn't it?

They absolutely do. The thing that trips up open world games is when they make you traverse through miles and miles of terrain doing next to nothing. Who cares if you have the largest map in existence if there's nothing to do, or the distance between interesting things is so large that it's annoying to get to them? That's what pushed most people who quit Wind Waker away, hours upon hours of sailing to find nothing of importance.

He better grow some wings or some shit

so this
latest

seems mandatory to me

I'd hope a flying animal companion is in, if the engine can handle it. Surely fast travel of some kind, though.

yup. quality over quantity every time.

Majora's Mask's overworld never felt small because it was so alive.

Agreed! Majora's overworld has yet to be topped for overworld density and simultaneous cohesion and diversity of world. I mean, the 3 day cycle really let them do some special things with the world.

But how many hours of gameplay is there?

I can't justify a purchase less than 80.

I believe Skyward, which mostly was not open world, had 60+ hours to 100%, so I imagine at least as many hours of fun will await here if you go for 100%.

if the bunny hood doesn't make it into this game

so help me

I sure hope it does. Imagine how great masks in general would be for interacting with this world.

Don't fret, there will be no warping. Also a Phantom-Hourglass style temple, nay, two! And lots of mining.

Please, don't pronise me this specific greatness and then disappoint.

Concerning the size of the overworld I just want strong NPC interaction, more than one town and engaging sidequests

Same here. Engaging sidequests are crucial to me. I imagine they're present, though.

right, also did we get TGS footage for this game?

Nope.

Just needs one or two other big games at launch and it will be impactful.

Agreed, and then a sustained launch window.

FWIW, it seems at least as dense with content as any open world Zelda, and more so than some. It will probably depend on your definition of emptiness vs. intentional open space punctuated with things to do. It's too early to really know, though.

I'm not sure that the Great Plateau is the best introduction for NPC interaction though the Old Man could exist partially on a schedule and does have some presence over the plateau.

The only reason they would have a detailed cycle for time would be for these NPC schedules.
