J.J. Abrams: A Portal Movie Announcement Is Coming Soon

Has the same issue as the Myst adaptation did—the enjoyment of the puzzle games is from the puzzles, and they have rather bare-bones stories for the purposes of a movie if you strip them out.

I give odds this doesn't end up happening. I refuse to believe these projects until they're in theaters.

Honestly, if there's a director out there right now that I'd trust with a Portal movie, Abrams would be one of them. Regardless of what you think of his filmography, he seems to treat every franchise he's involved with a huge amount of care and respect.

Yeah, I think he's pretty succesful at balancing "all that studio money" with key elements of the specific franchises.

At this point I hope the HL movie is just HL3 and continues the story. Just to get some sense of closure.

Won't happen, though

Actually Myst has a lot of backstory. The Original film was going to be based on the Myst novel The Book of Ti'ana. There were quite a few issues that ended up getting it canned including drama between the small team developing it. There's still the Hulu TV series that was announced over a year ago. There's been no new news of that at all.

This is a completely different situation. If Valve OKs at least one of the films it's going to be made. Bad Robot is a wildly successful production company. It and J.J. Abrams' names carry a lot of weight. I'm not quite sure what the content would be. Portal has all that history unveiled in Portal 2, but I think both would most likely be very different from the source material. I'm thinking they would do something very different while keeping the spirit and general story arc of each property to some degree. I think I remember Gabe Newell saying something similar in a very old interview about the subject.

You guys remember back 9 years ago when they put that LOST easter egg in Half-Life 2 EP2? Heck I even forgot about the Super 8 teaser in Portal 2.

Man there must have been at least a hundred games with a Lost easter egg in them.

Whilst I agree that the games themselves work very well *as* games, it's important to remember that these will very likely not be straight up adaptations.

The best way to adapt original source material is to not adapt the material itself but to adapt the feeling and atmosphere of the original into something that works well with a cinematic structure.

I wouldn't be surprised if we meet some new characters and story beats in this film
if it ever comes out.

JJ Abrams is a tool. And by that i mean he's an excellent tool for other scifi authors and film makers to use for fleshing out their stories and universes. Abrams excels at bringing out the details and making the things look and feel right.

I agree. A producer that actually produces good genre films.

Well he sure as heck did not redeem Trek or SW in my opinion (granted it is not a popular one)
I'm with you. I don't understand the appeal of this guy. I've never seen Lost but his movies haven't impressed me at all. Just typical big, dumb action movies.

Portal 2 had great character animation that very deliberately recalled Pixar's Luxor lamp short. I suspect a Portal film would be much more in line with that game's aesthetic.

Also: get J.K. Simmons please.

Half Life 3 is gonna get a movie done by Tommy Wiseau so that Valve can funnel their time and money into worthwhile projects like gambling communities.

Interested to see how they expand that world. It can't be just completing puzzles and running through portals. They should still keep that sense of isolation with the small cast like 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Even as a huge fan of the series, nothing about Portal begs to be a movie, seems like a huge waste of time and effort.

Very few books / TV series / comics / games / etc. begged to be turned into movies and many doubted they would work. Some made it better [Harry Potter] than others [Hobbit] through transition while others utterly suck [Resident Evil]. Personally I'm interested to see where they are going with this possible Portal movie, that short was excellent.

I think that the chap panders to the fans ad nausium.

Him shoe-horning Khan in Into Darkness, and the entire ANH into TFA is evidence of that.

That said, I don't think Portal could be made into a compelling movie...

Wait. Half Life movie? What. The entire point behind them is that shit happens around you without cutscenes. Aliens invading earth because of experiment gone wrong is hardly original enough as a film, Half Life related or not.

What is Valve even doing these days? No new CS:GO operation, and the gap between the last ones was wider than usual as well. No new games for years now.

I can see a movie set in the universe of Portal being interesting, but a movie that is adapted from the actual story of either game would be...difficult to make work.

That's just the start of the story. There is all kinds of stuff going on in HL and HL2 that could fill a movie. I don't think it's going to be follow Gordon around alone as he goes through black mesa.

Movie is going to be a Tie-in

So long as they don't use Gordon's actor's likeness for the game, I'm in.

The seven hour war would be fine material to work with. Or perhaps a 'Day in the life of the GMan'?
