Polygon: PRE-REVIEW: FINAL FANTASY 15’S FIRST 15 HOURS

"Made Final Fantasy relevant" is an interesting comment. I see a lot of Western game DNA in there and the result is what appears to be an incredibly dull Final Fantasy. We'll see.
Final Fantasy 15 is not a bad game. I spent the past few days rolling my way through a demo containing the game’s first five chapters in full, and barring it going completely off the rails as the game continues — a distinct possibility! — it’s on the verge of being an excellent game. And while it certainly takes some inspiration from Western RPGs, Final Fantasy 15 manages to be great without giving up the Japanese identity that long-time fans will be looking for.

I can't wrap my head around this being good after the horrendous platinum demo.

More from him on twitter(@pkollar):

I have been unable to shut up about how much I love what I've played of FF15 for days now. @LegsFrank and @jaykaypea will attest to that.

There have been SO MANY MOMENTS in the first 15 hours that have thrilled me, both tiny moments and big moments. They're doing so much right.

Also: I played the notoriously awful-looking Titan boss fight they showed on-stage at E3. In-game it's actually fun!

Last time he was this excited he gave FFXIVARR a 9. (He still likes XIV btw)

I only hear Balthier. Doesn't look like the team management is very important from these battles. Does this game owe a debt to Nier?

That's because that demo was utter shit. Duscae demo was way better even with the more barebones combat. Why they didn't release Duscae instead of Platinum is something I'll never understand.

Most likely because the Platinum demo tie directly into the anime series.

But yeah, it was definitely a bad way to represent the game.

Why shouldn't it? Dragon age does this on higher levels and d&d does it.
Hell FF 9 had a spell that hit everyone.

You can't control the other party members so they'll get caught in the crossfire a lot more. Its an action game to boot so now you have to be constantly wary of using those magic grenades which slows the action down.

Always massively skeptical of "pre-review" let's call it a PREVIEW that says a game is amazing, while also being the only place reporting this.

Are any other sites able to play 15 hours and confirm it's at least decent?

"highlights from the first 15 hours"

*doesn't look any different from the first two hours*

Are the first 15 hours comprised of running around doing side quests? I guess there's the Titan demo at the end.

I'm still keeping my expectations on the low side.

I always knew this game was going to be good, even when people laughed in my face for saying it!

Never in doubt

You don't actually think the Platinum demo was anyway indicative of the story or gameplay, right?

And the game has gone through a complete transformation since as recently as E3.

It is spoiler free footage, so he excluded major story elements aside from the Titan battle. The fact that Prompto says 'here we go again' when the meet Titan, suggest there is a summon fight before that.

It's confirmed in a sense since they've talked about it. Only problem is it doesn't look like it'll happen until 2018 since they don't want to just port it as is.

Well that's disheartening to say the least.

This game looks great, tho.

Never trust previews unless it's bad, am I right?

Never trust a single source of anything period, at least if you care about wanting to know what you're getting.
It's nice to see more and more positive impressions and it builds confidence even for a skeptic like me but it's not a guarantee of anything.
There are several games where the press was just fucking shit at assessing them(Diablo 3 launch version*, Sim City, FF XIII, etc) and my guess is because of deadlines.
Going to wait for reviews + the discussion once the honeymoon period on the game is over.

*especially goddamn diablo 3. I challenge anyone to tell me to my face that all the main systems of that game weren't broken as fuck once you played at 60.

I still don't get why magic hurts your teammates.

Is that confirmed? I thought the magic only affected how your teammates react, not damage.

Like Blizzard will cause them to slow down or freeze and Fire will make them scatter around instead of attacking as usual.

Why should I trust Polygon? It's not like I don't want the game to succeed, but it smells like money in here. Fleshed out quests like Witcher 3? That would be very nice. Strange battle system? Awh hell.

Good to hear. It's the game that will probably convince me to finally buy PS4 (Pro). I got a feeling, though, that over time after the release it will be more and more criticized.

Will wait for someone who's more of a lapsed FF fan like myself to review it. I feel like hardcore JRPG fans are buying this regardless of hyped up previews like this.

worth the wait would make it the greatest game of all time

Gamesradar sounds somewhat less enthusiastic: http://www.gamesradar.com/15-hours-...e=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=grtw

Seems like they are making similar mistakes when it comes to storytelling that FFXIII did. I am not going to watch all your garbage anime and movies just to get everything this game is about.
Uhm, it's basically the same as the Polygon one. Concerns about the overall story pacing and love for the road-trip feeling and the world.

Where Final Fantasy 15's story is winning me over, though, is in its moment-to-moment scenarios and side quests, and there are some truly impressive set-pieces within those opening chapters.

[...]

As much as the combat and those big set-pieces are Final Fantasy 15’s more impressive draw, it's the small moments that I cherished the most.

[...]

It's a deeply strange juxtaposition, and having those grounded moments where you get lost in the routine of everyday life in a world where a giant freaking crystal meteor just hangs out in the middle of a big open valley makes it all the more intoxicating.

[...]

I'm not sure how (or even if) Final Fantasy 15's later chapters will attempt to fix the issues I have with its story, but even if it doesn't, I've enjoyed my time exploring its strange world and experiencing what it has to offer, and I can't wait to see where it goes next.

Well yeah, I do. I'm sure it has early systems and things have been reworked but it's got to at least resemble the full game, right? I haven't followed the game much at all and dropped it outright after what I consider to be an unsalvagable demo. This is the "I can't wrap my head around it" part.

And the game has gone through a complete transformation since as recently as E3.

Which is also concerning IMO.

Graphics look rough.

World density seems pretty damn good to me, as does the lighting and modelling quality. IQ, Texturing and LoD are the main things. I have seen higher quality footage which shows the IQ in a better light. Even from this though, it is clear the IQ is better than Duscae, which had pretty abysmal IQ.

Glad to hear. I have no faith in any pre-launch non-actual review reviews though. I'll wait to see what Jason Schreier says. He's been very vocal about his enthusiasm/trepidation for this game.

Actually reading the article, it doesn't sound all that good or different from the fist two hours or so that we've seen, like we figured out how the game is structured. He even calls out the "open world bloat". eh.

I guess. It just seems like I've seen all of this before.
