The Last Guardian |OT| In my memories, the monster always has kind eyes

It should not be taking people almost an hour to make Trico do something. It shouldn't even take you 10-15 minutes. If it is, you are doing something wrong, not the game*.

In terms of regular gameplay, not glitches or bugs

I reached the point where the
narrator is telling me about how the boy and trico starting to understand each other and then the game will tell me about other commands.

After that I ordered Trico to smash to boxes and take me to 3 places and he listened almost instantly.

I will see if this stays for the rest of the game, because right now he is the opposite of stubborn.

Imo it only gets better and when it doesn't seem to work either it's a bug that happened to some of us (I've had it in two different places) or he responds with a moan or some gesture meaning he can't or doesn't understand/want to do it. I think I realized this last part late, but never too late.

Who's playing on orginal PS4? For someone who played ICO and SotC on PS2 and played the remaster on PS3 and find it ok, is performance here very bad that it might affect the experience?

I'm playing on an original PS4, and the performance hasn't bothered me. It plays very similarly to Fumito Ueda's other games -- his teams tend to prioritize complex AI and subtlety in the lighting and visuals over buttery smooth frames, and that's okay by me.

That said, I'm the sort of person who notices smooth framerates (Splatoon, yay!) and molasses framerates (Fable 3, boo!), but can get past the latter and have a good time anyway (playing dressup and doing flourishes in Fable 3, yay!) ymmv

This is the video game equivalent of victim-blaming lol.

Seriously. Bugs happen, sometimes only for some people and not others. If someone played Assassin's Creed Unity and kept clipping through the ground and falling out of bounds, is that them doing something wrong just because it didn't happen to you?

I've had sections of the game where Trico even stopped moving entirely. He'd just sit still in an open area and wouldn't do a thing. I had to reload the checkpoint multiple times to get him to move. But no, fuck me for criticizing it. It's either my fault, or it's not the game, or I'm not thinking of the AI as a real animal, or I'm not in the right mindset, or whatever. It's anything but this game having some serious frustrating AI problems at times.

EDIT: How about the time where you're (early game spoilers)
supposed to have Trico fight the armor sets for you? How about when that part happened and I didn't know what to do because he never actually attacked them. He just sort of wandered about like nothing was happening? Is that my fault too?

Its not meant like that, a bug is one thing and not knowing how to get trico to move is another.
Like the bolded never happened once and communicating trico was always easy, always learnt something after about why he wasnt responding.

Ok thank you.

I think i'll buy it.

This wasn't a section where I needed to do something. Again, very early game spoilers.
When you first get outside and you're walking out towards a cliff and there's trees around. He came out into that area, and then just stood still. He didn't walk, he didn't move, he didn't follow me, he didn't do anything on his own. He just sat still.

Glitches and bugs aren't what I'm talking about. Those are always an issue regardless of the game.

I'm playing on a base Ps4 and the framerate isn't bothering me what so ever. The game has no loading screens so it seems like the framerate only takes a dive when it looks to be loading the next area and still then thats only for a second or two.

Glitches and bugs aren't what I'm talking about. Those are always an issue regardless of the game.

But your post seemed like a direct response to what I have been complaining about. Spending 15-20 minutes at a time trying to get something to happen. Damn near every section of the game for me has had some sort of issue (I detailed a few early game ones in spoiler tags in my last few posts).

Why jump to the conclusion that if someone's having issues that it's their fault, not the game?

That's not what he's talking about though - he's responding to posters saying they can't make Trico do something consistently. That's not a bug, that means you probably aren't quite doing something right with Trico. All the experience I've had with him has resulted in his doing what he's supposed to do within 1 minute.

If he's misbehaving, change your tactics. Seems like the best strategy is:
- feed him as much as possible
- keep him calm with petting
- position yourself at the base of his neck/head when possible
- call him to an area then climb on and give commands

That's been my formula.

The hitching frame rate combined with the wonky camera really bother me and make me nauseous, so I can't play very long. I'm getting a Pro soon so hopefully that helps because I'm really enjoying it otherwise.

Because you are the only person having those issues. It does sound like mostly user error and fundamentally misunderstanding the mechanics.

Since you guys are currently playing...how obtuse can the controls/mechanics be though for there to be such a huge disconnect, where do you guys think this is coming from? As in, is the implication that superNESjoe and others experiencing these issues may be getting the controls wrong, reading the animal's body language incorrectly (is it that advanced?)...?

I'm still extremely interested as a fan of his previous games and potential buyer but just baffled by how seemingly different the experience is for some people regarding the AI and what the cause could be?

Lmao I'm not, I know that from Twitter and Reddit and YouTube. I'm just somehow the only person in this thread having issues.

Read my last few spoiler tagged posts and tell me that's me fundamentally misunderstanding the mechanics.

Seriously, why can I not criticize this game and get a "geez that's fucked up man, it shouldn't be happening"? All I get is "you're doing it wrong".

I had the same problem, chewing raw ginger solves it for me. Can't let a little (severe) motion sickness keep me away from my dogbird friend.

I can't speak about the glitches/etc. issues he was talking about, but generally, it's really not obtuse. You eventually get a command button and the commands mirror your own actions. Command + jump, command + forward, etc. Plus, Trico usually follows you around so you dont even need to really guide him through an area

Are there any menu settings in game on the pro to select 1080p/30 or some higher resolution? Are there ANY menu settings in the game for display other than brightness?

I was under the impression that when the game boots up you have a choice of resolution. I have the digital download version on Pro and only fiddled with it for a few minutes but the game just started right up. When i hit options I saw very rudimentary setting for brightness and no other display options.

Just want to make sure I have the game optimized (I have pro and 1080p set)

People have already tried to help you and you ignored the advise. So it makes sense you also ignore on screen clues even when they are staring you in the face.

For what it's worth I can also say that the game, despite being a frustrating mess at times for me, IS intuitive enough and the controls make sense.

I think you're fine. The game doesn't have supersampling.

This game doesn't include the ability to change in game sadly. If you want the best performing mode, you have to disable the 4K setting in the PS4 Pro's settings, and make sure you completely reboot the game, it won't change while the game is open.

Huh, I'm going to try that - think the crystallized kind would work? I actually have that in the house.
The Witness with its lack of reticle and low FOV literally made me barf. At least TLG isn't at that level.

I can't even fathom how much time it took the devs to get trico's animations/mannerisms right. Seeing him examine something or act curious, then touching/moving things, the animation and things are off the charts.

Also, the eyes. IMO the eyes of trico are the best eyes in a video game since Half Life 2, they just look so life like and like an animal.

He has a 1080p set so it's not set to 4K output. I think that's how it works.

Just wanted to post my screenshot that I took last night. I only just got out of that opening area but I already laughed quite a few times at Trico's reactions/actions.

Ya that was awesome. I loved the way the water actually make his feather and fur wet and heavy until he eventually drys out.

Also the water washes away the blood stains on his feathers. Those little touches.
I didn't notice the blood stains being washed away but I just played this part last night and just ran around and chilled in this area for a good hour haha I love just watching Trico and watching all the different reactions that emerge. I find it very compelling.

People have already tried to help you and you ignored the advise. So it makes sense you also ignore on screen clues even when they are staring you in the face.

Lmao ok, are you far enough in the game that you've had combat?

When the armored suits were throwing spears at Trico, he ignored them. They ran around his feet throwing spears and he just calmly looked away and walked around like nothing was happening. He wouldn't attack them.

Have you exited the cave for the first time at the beginning?

When you get out to the first wooded area and he jumps up and over and is supposed to walk out into the forest with you, he just stood still. He stopped even having natural animation or turning his head. He just stood completely still. I spent a long time trying to figure out what was happening until I reloaded my checkpoint and he actually started walking.

I haven't ignored advice, I mentioned that I get what I'm supposed to be doing but the game has frequently not worked, so that advice doesn't apply.

I posted a list of small things that i noticed where effecting trico's abilities on the last page. Its hard to help people when figuring it out, is part of the point. I think its largely coming from "press x to win","follow the yellow trail to find out who murdered batmans mom and dad" and the "puzzle solution is Y".
The most explicit thing the game teaches you about how to subtly interact with trico is regarding
petting him in different locations at certain times.
Your treated as intelligent and asked to treat trico like hes real.

He doesn't want to, because its scary/unpleasent for him.But he will do it, if you can convince him. i.e jump in the water first, will convince him to jump in with you
Your giving him orders and he cant see you, dont stand on the top of his heard. He'll turn around to look at you if you are giving him orders.
You are in the way, he needs you to move etc.
He already tried doing something multiple times and you ignored it.
You are giving him too many commands and he will show confusion.
If you want him to go up, just tell him to move in that direction.Jump means jump for this guy.
If you want him to go in a direction, point the camera and centre it in the direction. I.e to go vertically down, point the camera at floor.
He's distracted and interested in something else, to which you can hold r1 to get his attention.
Probably missed stuff, since theres aload of stuff the game doesnt care to tell you, which is fine by me.

I'm not ignoring advice or people's help, it just doesn't apply. People are ignoring my descriptions of bugs and not acknowledging them though.

Honestly, you guys all writing me off is more frustrating than the issues I was having with the game.

Thank you! I know it's bugged, I know it's not the way it's supposed to work, but like...nobody in here has wanted to say "wow that seems like a bad bug". I was met with multiple "you're doing it wrong" posts. Acknowledgement that it isn't perfect and that it's not user error, that's what I was looking for and so baffled that no one would say (other than the mod, and even then he made a comment about how it was likely user error).

For me, because the game handholds some controls (literally every time I reach a surface at waist level the game reminds me what the climb button is) that I assumed it simply told me everything I could do, but it never explained to you that you can make Trico jump and sit using the "Call Trico" button + triangle/X. Even the label "Call Trico" is a bit misleading in how narrow that label sounds.

If the game didn't bombard me with prompts involving controls all the time, I probably would have been more open to experimenting with the controls available to me to see what I can and can't do. The selective handholding gave me the wrong impression of how to play the game. Aside from that, I simply find the way I control the boy a bit slippery and inconsistent, but I'm adjusting.

So, Um, spoilers I guess. I'm like, 5 hours in (I think) and I'm stuck
in a tree. I've kicked and screamed my little heart out for the last 15 minutes, and have tried every combination of buttons I can think of. Trico has jumped to my right to try and help me, but then just fell right back down. Any hints on what I'm supposed to do here?

Try R1 + Triangle. That did it for me. Although this was after reloading, restarting, and reinstalling so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

He has a 1080p set so it's not set to 4K output. I think that's how it works.

Yeah I have 1080p so no reason to disable 4K. So my game will automatically output 1080p/30? And there is no other optimization options? Is the brightness option the typical "adjust slider till you can barely see this image" or something more rudimentary?

If I were in your situation, I'd delete my install and save game and start again, particularly as it sounds like you're still early on in the game. It does sound potentially bugged IMO, especially given that reloading checkpoints works for you as you previously mentioned.

I'm maybe three hours in.

I just got a notification that there's an update this morning (I was disconnected from PSN when I started yesterday) so I'm gonna let that install before I play again.

I will say, the "trico standing there motionless" did happen to me once. It does seem like a bug because it's so out of place (he's usually always pacing or if he's immobile, i would recognize his pose )

Also don't be mean people. Having bugs in TLG by now would be the least surprising thing after all
