there have been rumors since then that say Mother 3 is still a thing it was just put on the shelf for the time being

Yeah, if I would have lied I would also say "it will come out don´t worry, it is just delayed"

Kinda 2 months delayed like the september switch announcement.

Sorry if this comes out rude, but I really don´t believe any of them anymore. Funny how they waited for "dockmode" and "handheldmode" especially after the patents are out.

Also didn´t digital foundry mention an old devkit?

Wait, I'm even more confused.

Xbone's GPU is 800 mhz, and PS4's is 853 mhz.

I know clock speeds aren't everything, but a custom Nvidia chip at 768 mhz should be pretty close to those consoles performance, shouldn't it?

That's what I was thinking as well. I thought at best, the Switch should be near to XB1 in power.

Well this was a punch in gonads. I was hoping that the switch would be at least be a well supported Shield Portable. But its weaker than my Shield TV? Eeeew! I am still interested though. If they deliver on the first party titles I want I may bite. :^/

I had a feeling something like this would hit, I was just hoping it would be above wii u in performance still.

To me, it sounds like they are cheapening on the battery HARD. If this is 3 hours of battery life, no thanks.

This thing ain't running skyrim remastered, it's running skyrim. And i'd like to see 3rd party ports to this thing, because i'm not sure if anyone will be willing to go back to ps3 power in 2016.

If there is a silver lining, it's that nintendo's handheld crowd will still get it's smaller experiences, as the standard is going to be lower than previously thought.

January 12th can't come soon enough for nintendo, now more than ever.

I know I sound like I had expectations too high, but look at the capabilities of the chip they're using (or at least, that nvidia are capable of making)

nah thanks I like to stop believing any of these rumors. No rogers, no eurogamer. Laura was kinda right but even this could be a shot in the dark. I will wait until January and if there are any games I like to play I will buy it.

You know they're reporting on other people's rumours there right? They didn't run the story form their source they're just reporting on the other rumours that had come out at that time

The specs seem to fall in line with what I was expecting. Wii U+ when portable and ~3x.
Recall seeing someone say "5x is a safe bet" in a previous thread but I didn't think so.
Still pretty hype for a portable and should be able to play 720p Wii U level games at 1080p when docked if I'm understanding this right.
Conditioning it as a console might be a mistake, based on the response here, but as a portable it still sounds really good. It'll likely get a ton of Japanese and indie support and you shouldn't of expected otherwise.

PS4 Pro is basically a defense strategy against the PC. Andrew House even confirmed it in an interview (with the FT, I believe), where he mentioned that users tend to migrate to PC mid-gen and they didn't want that happening with PS4. Which makes sense more than ever this gen when there are so few bespoke games for console compared with last-gen.
It also makes more sense for the mid-gen Pro and Scorpio upgrades because the base consoles released at the start of the gen didn't push the tech relative to PCs as much as the 360 and PS3 did at their release. That means that the base consoles would show their age much sooner. The mid-gen releases now push that point back and is a good compromise. They keep the console/PC relative power to something similar to last gen without having to push the console tech at launch and release them at a loss.

Something doesn't add up here. This whole thing screams speculation more than actual confirmation. So I can't take this thing at face-value. I'm inclined to believe that DF could actually be wrong this time, but we'll see.

Nintendo needs to market this as a handheld you can connect to your tv with specs like this really (if true). As a successor to 3DS it's mighty impressive, as a console it's a big letdown.

The 3ds launched at 250. You expect this thing, with its tech, a dock, and Joycon controller thing to sell for 50 less?

Right.....

This time last year, the Shield Tablet K1's RRP was $199, and that device has a 1920 x 1200 resolution display, so I guess it's down to the Joycon + dock costs + extra shipping costs for an inevitably larger and heavier package for the system over a tablet.

So all 3rd party multis will look way worse on switch and it will sell less than wii u.
It'll sell more than Wii U. Once it launches, everyone's Super Mario Run and Pokemon Go apps will lock their phones in to Switch advertisements. Nintendo's masterplan.

When you're on a train, the Switch is considerably more powerful than a PS4.

But perhaps this is a damning comment on today's market, that the bottom line is about pure graphical prowess - regardless of light power draws, small form factor or portability. You see the same in threads about gaming laptops - "my huge desktop tower is considerably cheaper than this"...

One problem. The iPhone 7 is the dominant portable device, which almost certainly is more powerful, has a smaller form factor, has WAAAAY better battery life and has Nintendo games.

This is just the 2016 version of the iPhone we are talking about. Six months after the Switch is on the market, the 10th Anniversary iPhone (iPhone 8?) will be released with a brand new family of processors and an AMOLED screen.

So you have devices like this on one side and then big boy consoles like Xbox One Scorpio/PS4 Pro on the other.

This is the marketplace Nintendo Switch is going to complete in and supposedly draw 3rd party developers from (where the Lions share of game sales come from)

Of course, no one can predict the future, but you can't blame fans too much for feeling a little underwhelmed by Nintendo's offering, from a technical standpoint, if nothing else.

As always, software will save it, but it's looking like we are getting yet another Nintendo console that could have been so much more, IMO.

Look at consoles that I feel reached their full potential like the Xbox 360 did, the PS4 is doing and even the Super Nintendo was famous for. These products had all the 1st, 2nd and 3rd party games you could ask for and MORE.

Switch is just the latest generation N64 in my eyes; a supplementary console you buy for Nintendo games and that's pretty much it.

Rant over. Sorry. Just a pissed, disappointed fan who grew up on Nintendo games.

You asked and I answered. There's no reason to believe this "probably" isn't true.

Except that it's a rumor that contradicts multiple other rumors. That's enough to make it not true. At least until it's proven to be true or not. Whether it ends up being right or not will have to wait awhile. But that's true for all rumors.

I just find it dumb that when rumors state the Switch would be XBone level of power no one believes it. But as soon as a rumor says the Switch is super weak everyone agrees.

You should stop looking at the specs to figure how much it will sell. Your only problem with these specs should be how are third party supposed to run on this.

There are two aspects that combine into FLOPS: clock speed and shaders. XB1 and PS4 have more shaders than the Switch chip will have, and that is why they perform better.

Edit:
Not if it chugs at sub 30 fps

Except the game was shown to be running smoothly on the Switch, even with heavy effects like explosions going on.

Oh I paid attention alright. Yet I got disappointment after another: Mario Tennis, Animal Crossing Amiibo Party, Starfox Zero, Yoshi's Woolly World, Paper Mario Color Splash...

Color Splash and Woolly world are great and well polished games. On top of that Wii U had games like Xenoblade X, Hyrule Warriors, Fatal Frame 5, Splatoon, Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, etc. etc. all funded or made by Nintendo.

Wii U was probably one of Nintendos best consoles regarding games quality. Switch could be many gamers heaven when it get as many games as 3DS and WiiU combined.

multiple outlets with solid sources reported on Mother 3, I doubt they were lying. things change. if I was a betting man I'd wager that Nintendo didn't want to waste the Mother 3 hype on Wii U and it was put on the shelf for Switch.

even if it never comes to fruition I think concluding that those outlets were lying is, well, dumb

You aren't accounting for the "Nintendo Difference" in the price

I'm seriously considering waiting for the first Switch refresh/variation that focuses on actually being a home console. One can dream, right?

Nintendo is done in the home console space, in the traditional sense.

You'll get handhelds from now on, that double as home consoles when docked.

CoD games, sports games, japanese titles, Ubisoft maybe a few others. That's why I'm laughing at the image that people keep quoting about third parties.

I need to see the third parties first before I take anything in that image seriously

I am sure it will still be above Wii U in performance quite a bit, even in handheld mode. in docked Mode its over 2 times Wii U on much more modern hardware with more Ram and better CPU. It's running UE 4, so it has all modern features.

Stop ignoring Splatoon, one of the best games Nintendo has developed in years.

Heck, Paper Mario: Color Splash is probably my game of the year. While the Wii U's library is absolutely lacking in variety compared with Wii's, I can't say I was disappointed by its exclusive output.

Just a shame it's basically missing mid-tier exclusives like Wii: Stuff like Zack and Wiki, Lost in Shadow, Boom Blox, SSX Blur, Elebits, Dewy's Adventure, Excite Truck, Endless Ocean defined the system for me.

Welp. I was wrong. It really is just a portable Wii U and bumped-up one when docked. Can we officially call NateDrake a fake now? This really is just where the successor to the Vita would land. Skyrim will chug on this. It's weaker than the PS3 by a huge margin when portable. This is not a current-generation machine.

I'm sorry to all of the naysayers I argued with. You were right. I'll never be optimistic about Nintendo again.

Weaker than PS3 by a huge margin.

Lmao.

I can't believe I got hyped by that stupid reveal trailer, even after I thought I'd learned my lesson to never expect Nintendo to deliver what I want as a consumer. I feel like a dummy. Was Emily's rumor about it being close to XB1 power a bust? Frankly even that was barely acceptable.

The reveal will be interesting in January. Still, so, so disappointing that we're getting, again, a Nintendo home console with a terrible performance against the competition.

I had the dream of playing sports titles and indie games on the go, along with all the first party output by Nintendo.

A Wii U+ is an embarrassing proposition by Nintendo, and even worse, their titles will look similar to how they look now, which means games restricted in looks and scope, by technology setbacks...

It's more powerful than the PS3. Stop with this shit, too.

Am I the only one who doesn't want the handheld part of this thing and feel Nintendo is being disingenuous about the "console" switch it can do?

I feel Nintendo has left consoles behind and therefore leaving what I want behind.

I don't use handhelds, I own them but use them at home, I work full time and drive to and from work, I don't have downtime in my day to use a handheld let alone my smartphone for gaming.

So to me this feels like a continuation of the Game Boy, DS, 3DS line rather than a new console.

It is considerably more powerful than the PS3 even if it features no customizations running at these clocks.

What is the most graphical Nvidia Shield game?

There have been a few poor ports to Android and Open GL: Metal Gear Rising and Resi 5 to name a couple.

It wouldn't be worth using them as any point of comparison since those ports:

1) Weren't handled by the original dev teams or a developer known for quality
2) Were running on Android
3) Were running on OpenGL

Switch will give developers much closer access to the hardware like most consoles, and Android is generally not a great OS for gaming.

Amd have lower clockspeeds .

Interesting.
I wonder how this "Seasons of Heaven" reveal turns out. The first in game footage, whatever this may run on, looked way more impressive than WiiU graphics. It left me sceptical.

Even if I keep repeating myself, the footage shown in the Switch concept trailer was chosen for a reason in my opinion. It looked very WiiU - like. Which is ok. Small device. Low wattage. Low heat. Reasonable battery duration. Not overly expensive.
I guess there we have it. Let's wait what they are able to pull off on bells and whistles with the custom chips, but I think it won't be such a big jump from WiiU.

This would be fine for me if it would launch at $199, but with this being Nintendo, it won't. At $249 it's going to be the same price as a PS4 or Xbox One with a game packed in. That spells doom for the Switch in the West. Maybe it can thrive in Japan with their love of handhelds.
