Does it really matter? Either way I don't want to see it under the skirt. They could have made the skirt a bit longer as well with all the flipping around she does.

That's Yoshida's art style generally speaking. Nothing to do about it

I didn't play it yet, so maybe I'm underestimating how basic the combat is, but to people saying they're disappointed because of the combat depth compared to previous Platinum games, surely you mean Bayonetta? MGR didn't have a lot of mechanical depth at all. People didn't like to admit it at the time, but DmC has a lot more combat depth than MGR.

Of course, this doesn't mean anything when you have stuff like the color coded enemies, some pretty uninspired weapons and awful boss fights to go with that, and it didn't stop people from thinking MGR was a much better game, but that's exactly my point here. Combo potential is not the only form of gameplay depth. That boss battle they showed at E3 looks better than any boss fight in MGR, mechanically (imo, of course). And I absolutely love most of the bosses in MGR!

You can't just ignore the whole new layer of combat depth that the bullet hell elements bring, as well as the camera and genre shifting making for interesting gameplay scenarios and bosses.

Well this demo doesn't feature a lot of weapon types and pod-functions or a trial mode they showed in streams so people can only get so much out of this demo.

So for whatever reason I never played the original NieR or the other games that NieR was a spin off from but I'm interested in this a lot, it looks great.

So regarding the story, will I need to play any of the other games or maybe get on YouTube to catch up on the story or is this an unconnected story that I can just jump into ?

The demo was fun. This feels like a true to form video game that first got me into gaming.

The art style is great, the combat feels fluid, and the character design is also good.

With this being said I'm not picking this game up in 2017. I'm no longer a fan of the style of game anymore and I say this while praising it--so this wouldn't fall in my top 5 games I'm excited for in 2017 but in my top 10. Since video games are not free and the teams behind this game deserve every cent they are charging for it, and I cannot squeeze it into my gaming budget.

I feel like I will be seeing a lot of gifs of this game next year.

Also c'mon GAF. You guys should always have a Japanese and UK PSN account ready for betas/demos lol
Is the demo apart of the story?

Wow, this game is just incredible. I haven't really been gaming lately but the adrenaline rush you get from this is just great. Crazy that Horizon comes out March 1st and this comes out on the 10th :(

Supposedly, you don't need to know anything to play this game.

Is the demo apart of the story?

Knowing YokoTaro, i would say its likely that what transpires in the demo has something to do with the game.

If you play a game designed by Yoshida you're gonna see a healthy amount of thigh haha

See I actually like Yoshida's art. The artwork for this game itself is pretty good, and I love his character designs for some of the FF's and Tactics Ogre. But when I'm jumping and flipping around all over the place doing somersaults, cartwheels and whatever, it just feels and looks off. I'm perfectly fine with thigh which doesn't bother me so much as the leotard/underwear stuff that's off putting

Sure, but if you say you're disappointed, that means you expected more out of it, even considering it's just a demo with a very limited set of tools.

It is how it is. Its an M rated game, and the level of skin on display is generally in line with previous entrees in the series.

YMMV, but its not out of the ordinary

Nier, Nioh and Horizon in February.

Crazy month isn't it? Holy shit.

I mean, naturally this is an Open World RPG with Action gameplay not a character action game, even fi the demo might make a different impression due to its linearity.

So expecting this to be a new Bayonetta is in on itself a wrong expectation to have.

But when talking about the depth of the gameplay you should not forget that this Demo

1) Utilizes a lot of Bullethell elemets - certainly more than the first Nier did even - which adds its own position based layer of gameplay, which in return of course sacrifices other gameplay elements.

2) Does not feature a lot of enemies types, weapons or magitech skills that were shown in trailers and streams.

3) And that this Demo is probably the tutorial area, based on the way 2B and 9S interact.

I'm really liking it. The only issue I have is 2B's outfit. I like how shall we say stylish some of the moves, animations and finishers can be and the flourish to them.. But why the gap in the skirt so I can see her underwear pretty much all the time? Kinda annoying and puts me off. It's not as bad as Kaine but still. This is something I think my sister would enjoy but seeing something like that straight away may dissuade her

In the UK at least.

Kos mos featured in you avatar shooting lasers from where she does is a lot more dubious to me,as to what the creators were thinking, but i guess people have different sensibilities. You can maybe have hope for different player characters or costumes if Platinum puts in their usual work.

Yeah I know how it works. Just disappointing. It's not gonna stop me from getting and enjoying the game though. As I said, I'm liking the demo a lot. Just would have been nice is all

It's been a long time since I played Xenosaga! Maybe it didn't bother me so much in my teens or I've grown more aware of how tiresome it is. If I do eventually get my much wanted and mythical Xenosaga Remaster, I might end up feeling the same way. Heck I remember her last special move in III where her top comes off or something. Well at least in the cutscene version and not the in game battle one

But it's the flipping around combined with the outfit that's the issue anyway.

I don't have what it takes to play on hard so i can't speak to what people with better skills want from the combat.
The full game is more open world style like Ocarina or the first Nier, so the whole rpg elememt with questing and talking to people and exploring bigger places is lost on anyone playing the demo.

3 runs in, with the first one ending in an ignoble defeat at the boss. All on hard. Overall impression: Everything I could have wanted from the demo. It was both NieR and Platinum.

The animations have impeccable flair to them, the level had some nice exploration bonuses (I expect opening shortcuts will actually matter in the main game), the music was decent/good.

Gravity Rush 2 and Tales of Berseria in January,
Nioh in February,
NieR in March,
Persona 5 in April,
And Ni No Kuni 2, Zelda BotW, Dragon Quest 11, mayyybe FFVIIRemake.

This is literally the best time to be a fan of rpgs and japanese games in general.

Hell, GOTY 2017 is going to be a bloodbath.

I did not spend too much time with the demo but what I can say is is that the combat is definitely simpler than MGR, Bayonetta is on a whole other level. Just don't expect a typical character action game and you won't be disappointed.

Ew, this is why Bloodborne is the worst Souls game. You can basically beat the whole game by equipping the Hunter's axe and holding R2. All these great enemies with all their different attack patterns and you can just cheese your way through fights.

I will be broke buying two games in that period so i will have to make painful choices.

Just finished the demo, and fuck, I'm blown away. Pure Japanese video game porn.
I already expected something great, but it's even more incredible when playing in person.
Wow.

I've never played NieR or any of this guy's other titles but damn, I can't f'ing wait to download this demo based on the gameplay footage I watched.

I absolutely love the aesthetics in this...the weird, barren industrial retro Sci-Fi look, the menus, it looks so tight.

Combat looks and sounds really fun and good based on people's impressions here. Sadly I won't be able to get the demo until after the weekend but I'm psyched already.

Still JP only?
Been available for a while here in Finland. EU PSN.

OT: I really, really like you can customize the amount of stuff you have on screen via the chip customization. And it is even an actual RPG feature as well, since it seems all the chips take a certain amount of ..headspace? and likely we will be picking up all kinds of cool chips in the main game. Don't have enough space? Rip off some of your default chips and put that shiny new sucker in. But oh, you removed the enemy level indicator and got pasted by some hidden bonus-boss creature way above your level? That would fucking rock.

First things first: Loved the demo and am even more super-hyped than I was before.

A few spoiler-ish thoughts regarding what the demo suggests about the game in relation to how things panned out in previous forays into the Yoko-verse, and what we know about Automata thus far.

1. Is Yoko going for a reverse of Nier insofar as that game was set in a world that was dying, whilst this one features a resurgent natural order?

2. That being the case will the visuals get more saturated and colourful as the story progresses, more animals to ride appear and so on?

3. The demo looks like the intro/prologue of the game, and already we're at the "I didn't realize the machines had intelligence and language" phase. Seems like the core twist of Nier is going to get rolled out early on.

4. I assume at some point we'll be able to understand them clearly with an optional pod component. Which would be an awesome twist as it places the onus on the player to decide whether to embrace or hide from their actions!

5. Seems like the black-box system is a big part of the game, and I think will be used to drive the "many" endings promised in the Edge piece.

6. My assumption is that when the BB system is used the characters involved are physically destroyed, but their experience and memories are sent back to the orbital bunker where they are placed in new android bodies, ready for the next sortie.

7. I'd assume this area acts like a hub/waiting room between game cycles. Its "heavenly" status hinted at by the bunker appearing in monochrome.

8. So essentially, this demo would be the intro, and the game will then shift to the bunker, and then onto the main-game proper as the next mission. So, in a way NG is automatically NG+. This is a cycle that can be repeated over and over.

9. However, based on the logo I kinda suspect that with each "reincarnation" the androids personality shifts somewhat as data corruption sets in (analogous to the black scrawl in Nier). This is why 9S gets increasingly bloodthirsty as mentioned obliquely in the previews.

10. The obvious "endgame" is that this unending cycle of combat->death->rebirth is facilitated by the bunker and the black-box system. Which means that revolting against the bunker's orders (cos lets face it, they aren't likely to be the "good guys") will result in 2B facing "true" death somewhat similar to Nier's ending D payoff.

Obviously I could be way off base with this, but if you excuse the brag I did float this idea way back at the beginning of 2014 in the Yoko Taro is now unemployed thread :D
