NieR Automata PS4 demo available now

For some reason I thought this demo was JPN only until I checked the thread this morning. I will definitely download and play through the demo this weekend when I have some time. For now, keep the impressions and GIFs coming. I am literally drooling at the animations and combat I have seen in this thread. More! More! More!

Does Platinum Games have a habit of releasing Definite/ GOTY versions of their games? I loved the demo but will be too busy in March to justify buying the Day One Edition and don't mind waiting longer if I can get all the DLC.

If not I'll be fine buying the base game in the summer, but I was just curious. Google hasn't given me anything and I know for a fact that Transformers Devastation received no such thing.

Square Enix previously rereleased NieR with a new main character, so I imagine they'll do something equally annoying with Automata.

wat? this is not true.

The combat in the original Nier wasn't as exploitable (dodge in this game is seriously op) and better freedom of movement while not swinging your sword.

Same as how Phoenix lance was OP as fuck on the original. And we don't know yet how the dodge will work with other enemies. I remember people thinking the slashing mechanics on MGR were OP and the game will be just slow-mo slash everything without even starting a fight.

That wasn't a rerelease, that was just a slightly altered version released at the same time, like Pokemon Blue and Red.

Only one of which got brought to the west unfortunately.

What? No, they didn't. NieR Gestalt and Replicant are the same game released on the same day. The only difference being the protagonist being young or older and being the father or brother to Yonah. There are no other differences besides that.

EDIT: And that was only in Japan.

Can't stop playing through the demo, the game is too far away lmao

Right? It's so fun! I am also trying to decide on a control scheme. Type C seems to be working well for now. I just need stop changing schemes every battle, lol.

Whoops, had no idea Gestalt and Replicant came out on the same day. I always imagined Replicant as a rerelease to appeal more to Japanese fans.

platinum might, but SE wont (for its japanese made games unless pc is the difference as all the console games with a good chunk of dlc never got a GOTY edition like thing) Drakengard 3, the FF13 games with dlc, never recieved a definitive edition (maybe outside of the pc ports)

Wow, this really sucked. You could literally not get hit by the boss if you just mashed the R2 button. Pretty funny when Platinum can't even make gameplay that's better than Cavia's.

Uh, how is this a problem? Of course that is you mash the dodge you're less likely to get hit. But you won't be in an offensive position and will have lots of trouble attacking him. Using the dodge just when you really need to even benefits you.

Great demo. It's interesting how it manages to feel so much like Nier follow-up and a Platinum game at the same time. Both have a very "gamey" feel to them that seems to mesh really well.

At this point my only worries are that the game will be too short and/or repetitive because of budget constraints. Whatever, I'm really happy and thankful that Squeenix greenlit this project.

Well, I liked everything I saw in the demo. Have not played the first game though and unless it comes to Xbox BC I'm going to miss out so I hope that won't ruin the full game in any way.

Gravity Rush 2 and Tales of Berseria in January,
Nioh in February,
NieR in March,
Persona 5 in April,
And Ni No Kuni 2, Zelda BotW, Dragon Quest 11, mayyybe FFVIIRemake.

This is literally the best time to be a fan of rpgs and japanese games in general.

Hell, GOTY 2017 is going to be a bloodbath.

I COMPLETELY forgot Persona 5 got pushed back. This gives me so much more time to enjoy Nioh. But then again, that just opens me up to getting For Honor. Dammit.

Loved the design and the soundtrack though, but damn that combat was terrible.
Consider that the difficulty might be tuned to Babby's First Action Game mode so as not to alienate non-action gamers. I think Platinum said something to this effect before. Or maybe the dodge will always be super lienient to prevent frustration or allow for otherwise excessively intense combat scenarios.

There's more to good combat than sheer difficulty, BTW. Responsive controls, cancelable attacks, fluid animations... You're sure in a rush to bash the world's best action game studio.

I haven't played the demo yet, but I'm not opposed to the idea of dodge being OP.

In fact, I kind of like it when games make you feel like you're controlling an OP character, yet still manage to be difficult.

Example 1: In Bayo1, your dodge is ridiculously strong. It cancels out of 99% of your attacks, is fast, gives you instant invincibility, moves you extremely far, slows time, and you can even do it AFTER you get hit and still avoid damage (Bat Within). And that's all before you figure out Dodge Offset.

Despite all this, Bayo1 is generally considered a fairly challenging game. Not the hardest, but not a cakewalk either. The game makes you feel OP while still being challenging.

Example 2: Bullet hell games tend to give you absurdly small hitboxes. It isn't uncommon to have games where your hitbox is a single pixel on the screen. You're typically outfitted with screen-clearing invincibility-granting bombs and continuous-fire shots that make short work of non-boss enemies.

Despite this, bullet hell games tend to be extremely challenging. Across all game genres, bullet hells / shmups probably have one of the highest average difficulty levels.

These games give you OP tools, but that doesn't make them easy. In fact, the developers are able to tune the difficulty high because they've given you extremely powerful tools. Success depends on your skill to utilize those tools successfully.

Maybe Nier doesn't get this right (as I said, I haven't played the first demo, and I haven't played the first Nier [yet!]). But having the dodge be borderline OP actually seems extremely appropriate, given the genres the game is drawing from. Hopefully it manages to be challenging and rewarding despite that.

The dodge needs to be a strong move because the somewhat dynamic bullet hell action. The way the projectiles are spread is always controlled by Platinum like they might are in the bossfight, since a lot of enemies will move during the shooting controlled by their AI.

If the dodge doesn't give you enough invinciblity or got too much cooldown you might would end up finding yourself in situations in which you can't dodge the projectiles, which would be incredibly frustrating in higher difficulties.

This demo is a win with the family.

"What is this new camera angle. I don't like it."

[Two minutes latah]

"Ok I'm understanding the purpose of the camera angle. I really like it."

(At the end of the demo)

"Oh I forgot this was a demo. Noo"

Hate to be that guy, but if you're not a fan of "games that turn into shoot 'em ups" you should probably pass on this game.

The first Nier was, at it's core, an action-RPG/Bullet-Hell hybrid.

Fair enough. I just think it went a bit too repetitive with it, like, absolutely nothing new to the mechanics. I still love Furi, and it follows kind of the same base, it just creates such a better challenge with it, I really don't feel like mastering this thing. Was there any actual reason not to keep R1 pressed for the WHOLE demo? Not even exaggerating. I don't know, doesn't feel deep to me (and if it is, it doesn't seem interesting). Reminds me too much of the Naruto games in those "huge supposedly epic fights that I get tired of inmediately".

You and I must live in different worlds. What was the last game you played that was like this? Devil May Cry? Bayonetta? They don't come out too often.

They definitely don't come out too often. If you really like their style and want more of it, this will get you excited. I just found too many cliches in it that I didn't enjoy in any of the other Platinum games, or in the other hack and slash games, or the other japanese action games... I don't see it growing. And it really seems visually boring witht he robots and the brown and stuff.

This year the FPS genre for example gave me Titanfall 2 and Doom, and I was so burnt out and tired of the CoD and others last year that I had a blast playing them because they got so much better. In this case, comparing the Bayonetta 2 demo and this one I only see it's more boring.

I'm a downer, sorry for the huge rant, please if you enjoyed it ignore my complaints and have fun, I'm just feeling a bit tired of these "Gameplay Deja Vu"

This just made me upset that I have yet to complete my PS3 backlog! Ugggggggghh!!!

I'm assuming this demo is still not in the US store is it 😫😥

These gifs, man... one look and I'm like, yep, that's Nier. And I mean that in the best possible way. Can't wait to try this after work!

Anyone know the song that plays before you start the application?

The one where you press down to see more info on nier and a song plays while you see overview, trending, etc.

It's so good lol.

You probably didn't know that the previous games in the series were Dynasty warriors rejects at worst in the gameplay departement. Fans are baffled how this game came into existence.
The game slides off you from the general idea of it's not a good enough Action game to not bore you to tears i get that, but people also get bored of God Hand too and when i hear that happens i will actively try to live differently from such people that went too hard in on something.

Staggered releases are bullshit. I should have just made a jpn psn account. There is no reason to hold this back.
Relax. Earth is freaking big and time zones are a thing. We leave in the best time zone, Grace Chen time zone. It's so wonderfully unpredictable. Other time zones can't match that.
