NieR Automata PS4 demo available now

HStallion

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Are people honestly not a little weary of DMC combat yet?

I liked Transformers and Bayo but struggled to get through them due to them being the same old shit with a few mutations.

Those games play very differently... like there are huge differences.

I only got a very short hands on last night but plan on putting a lot more time into this and the Gravity Rush demos this holiday weekend. Really enjoying everything though, its so damned smooth and responsive and combined with the insane action, just great stuff. On top of that the game is a looker and damn if the music isn't great already.

Man, some of the feedback on this game is just ridiculous.

I was blown away by every aspect of this demo.
It is a forum for discussing shit, not a circle jerk.

Even though my opinion is essentially the opposite of Morrigan's on basically every aspect.
Both on this game and Platinum's others.

The mechanics, by themselves, are fine, though I don't care much for the super-flashy slashing, but that can be forgiven if everything else works. It's how they are used that I don't like. The terrible camera, the boring enemies, the scripted nonsense during boss fights (and the boss itself was really really boring to play even outside of that).... There was never anything genuinely exciting going on, though the game tries to pretend otherwise.

Not everything can be Ys tier boss fights
This game will have Ys tier boss fghts

As far as difficulty goes hard is decent. The higher difficulties show these types of games off better as by default you are op

Out of curiosity, which control scheme did you use before & which one did you settle on? I'm changing mine tonight as well to see if what I have in mind benefits me, but I like seeing others as well.

1st run with default settings. Whoever came up with those, needs a boot.
2nd run: R1 dodge, L1 shoot, R2 Pod, L2 weapon change, L3 lock-on. Weapon change on L2 gives me some of the Bayonetta feeling back, although it works different. For example you can combo from light attacks with the short Katana -then L2- into heavy attacks with the same weapon.

That's fair, but there's a bit of a difference when it comes to FPS and these games. These games are based on their combat engines and juggling mooks, whereas FPS tend to have a stronger focus on level design, for the sake of disparity. And I feel like FPS tend to have a more meaningful divergences in encounter design to the point where most shooters don't really play the same way.

Beyond that, I'd have the same problem if every shooter played like COD.

It's possible, since I feel this particular direction kind of peaked in 2k5 with DMC3. However, I feel like Metal Gear Rising was the most refreshing game in years from the genre.

I can see that perspective. MGR was definitely unique in its approach to enemies and emphasis on defense timing compared to usual action titles. This demo doesn't showcase it's full potential but I think the emphasis on range combat will separate it from its peers, as well as being a Zelda-like RPG. Time will tell though.

DMC and Transformers and Bayonetta etc are only the same on a pretty surface level.

There are obvious differences, but the core mechanics are largely the same with a few quality of life and casual-friendly aids. I feel like witch time and big boot kind of strip some of the encounter design depth and readjust the focus of combat in a negative way. But I wouldn't try to tell someone that it wasn't "DMC but _____," because that would be disingenuous; it's obviously an expanded on model.

Thanks for understanding, and I hope so! That CPU chip system in the options seems wild.

Ridiculous outfit, high heels, stupid bandage over the eyes, but we're supposed to believe she's some advanced soldier robot? Right. All flashy, "sexy" (lol) style, no substance. I guess it's just like the game, really, so she fits right in.
The idea of the bandanna is that it's a high tech visor she can percieve through. It's a take on the classic "blind swordsman" who doesn't need to use his eyes to cut.

I'm not having high hopes but I wonder if the RPG world outside combat will be something compelling. One of the best thing about Nier for me was just running around in the field while listening to amazing music.

Still getting Automata for Platinum Action just don't know if for anything else.

Loved how 2B says emotions are not allowed, gets overemotional about the other guy
got hit hard
.

And auchs her back must hurt alot from that pose.

Anyway combat feels dinamic but the encounters are dull enemies are just punching bags and bosses fight are not so good in the demo.

The male visor looks nice, the female visor looks like bandages on her face.

How does Yoko Taro handle romance in his stories anyway? 2B and 9S looks like they're going to be a thing, not that the promo art and cover didn't give that away already. Well, if not romantic, then familial love or something.

Custom controls in games like these are the best. I always spend an unhealthy amount of time messing around and then eventually changing my preferred set multiple times though as I find what works for me. Currently it seems to be:

L1: Pod
L2: Lock-on

L3: Evade (duplicate, but I am using this as a bootleg "stick-sprint" hack lol)
R3: Reset Camera (will probably swap for lock on though)

R1: Evade
R2: Fire

Square: Light Attack
Triangle: Heavy Attack
Circle: Evade (duplicate, I need it for muscle memory after my FFXV PS accessibility button swaps - might make this a change weapon duplicate instead though, idk?)
X: Jump

D-Pad buttons: keep as defaults

Touchpad Left: Shorcuts (may swap for torch as these 2 are my least used options)
Touchpad Right: Action

Being able to use duplicate options as well is great

They usually don't go well....and by that I mean tragically or it wasn't that healthy of a romance to begin with.

The only romances of his i can think of are

Drakengard 1 Spoiler

Caim + Furiae

An incestious relationship between brother and sister, ending with her suicide

Nier Spoiler

Nier + Kaine

Happens basically five minutes before she mutates into a monster and Nier is forced to either kill her to delete himself off of the world.

Kimi Shi ni Tamau Koto Nakare Spoiler

Child Soldier + Child Prositute (forgot the names)

He thinks they care about each other while hes actually only doing it for the business or something, the manga so far ain't really good so i don't bother remembering the details

Also when you really start understanding the combat it's just phenomenal. I can even burst threw those magic enemies that annoyed me so much before now!

I contrary to many here really hope not much of Platinum DNA pass over this game, I just want their combat thats it, I want everything else to be pure ol Nier weirdness Taro Yoko on his prime batshit crazy.

I dont want a action game, I want a RPG with good combat thats it, hell if the final game has only this combat and nothing more I Will be happy.

Played through this earlier. I went from not caring much to wanting to buy it. Fun demo. Game seems so far removed from the original Nier however, so I'm curious to see why it shares the title.

Like what I played and feel it's solid.

Graphics are average overall. Texture work is overall poor, character models are alright and the animation is good. Artstyle is unappealing to me, especially the character designs.

The little bit of writing and voice work that was revealed in the demo has me scared. It's bad and cringe worthy.

The gameplay is the real standout part in the demo even though it feels safe from a design standpoint. Platinum has a Ubisoft type of thing going on. And like Ubisoft I like what they do, I just wish they tried to be radical in designing the base gameplay.

I am leaning towards buying this.

I agree with this. I want a yoko taro game that (finally) has good performance and plays well.

I saw a thread where people were outraged that Nier wasn't on most anticipated games of 2017. And I was like what the fuck is Nier?

Then there's a demo. I try it and finish it. This is what people are frothing for?
Third person action game with a cornball Japanese trope coat of paint.

I like Bayonetta 2 but this shit seems like D League work.

You're not really being contrary to anyone then. That's exactly what Platinum fans want too. That's what people like them for, their combat.

The Demo was pure Platinum goodness with a few bullet hell twists.

Who would have ever thought that Nier Automata demo would have a 50 page thread in a little over a day?

Man, thinking back to the week where I got the first game for review, completely blind, LOVED it and preached about it as much as I could, but saw it crash and burn in reviews and sales... This sure feels good. :)

I think I missed the RPG part

As in using a dash to cancel out of a move, or using a move to cancel out of a dash? I didn't notice any problems, but now that you've said it, it's gonna be in the back of my mind when I run through the demo again.

(Its WIP tho, I'm always changing and this is what I'm using for now. Once I come off of the FFXV muscle memory there will probably be changes again, lol)

Nier had a wedding in it. There was also the lighthouse lady but I dunno if that counts.

I can appreciate what I played and can see myself picking it up, but I got burnt out part way through the demo and put it down.

However, I went from having not followed the game at all to being interested, so that's a good sign.

Oh yea, i forgot.

So these two are there as well

Facade's king + Freya

Bride getting brutally bitten to death by a wolf at her wedding

Lighthouse Lady

Old lady waiting for her lover to reappear while she's laying on her deathbed, just to find out that her lover died years ago and the postguy pretended to be him by writing her letters

If you learn one thing by playing Yoko Taro games, it's to never ever fall in love with someone.

Does seem pretty minor. I certainly wouldn't notice it in motion, while playing.
What? The shimmering/aliasing is extremely noticeable (definitely more so in some pictures than others). Doesn't detract from the gameplay though, which I guess is the most important part. :)

I really liked using evade as a way to maneuver in the air. Too far away from a flying enemy? jump, evade into light combo. Really simple but really satisfying.

The way to play this game in regards to shooting to me is similar to bullet hells. its not so much about shooting as it is about dodging.

Yeah I agree to some extent, some of the writing seemed like it came out of some corny, bad anime ("Just die already!").

Was dialogue in the original Nier like this? From what everyone has been saying, the writing and story were really good in that game.

Well he's definitely good at creating these sort of dysfunctional families, both NieR and Drakengard 3 were good in that aspect imho (especially the former).
Hope that's going to be in Automata too.

What Im seeing is they want more depth on the combat and I disagree with that, I want more depth on the other parts of the game, combat already is miles better than the first.

I wouldn't blame you two. Castlevania peaked with Symphony and 2D Mario with 3/World. And RE4 is GOAT.

No, I, er, that was irony. Those are games that deeply impacted how other, similar games were made, to the point where design elements from them can still be seen today.

I know you were being snide. I just don't think RE4 has been topped by other TPS games, nor have its core elements been in too many other games outside of camera perspective. Gears and Uncharted feel utterly banal outside of multiplayer, so I wouldn't have blamed you if you had been truthful (that was the irony I was responding with). Beyond that, I've addressed FPS games in one of my prior posts which has some significant overlap with TPS games.

I hope they make a Bayonetta 3, but it's a corridor emotional, humorless scripted cinematic experience, filled with walk&talk sections about the relationship between Bayonetta and her daughter, and forced stealth segments, and flashbacks where you just read a book in real time.
Y'all action games fans deserve it.
