Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

They would need to capitalize on the movie's Summer 2017 release or the Blu-ray release in Nov-Dec 2017 (likely). So I think it's going to be one of those for Spider-Man.

Spider-man is already in development for at least 2 years and 3 months. The fact that it doesn't have a name is simply something that is reflective of whatever decision they haven't made for that game.

Something can easily already have a title before the project even began. Some things, maybe they take longer if option (A) and option (B) have their pros and cons and they don't need to decide yet.

Insomniac has never had their games at more than 2 E3s in a row. It would be news to me if Spider-Man comes out past May 2018. Also Insomniac has released 17 games ever since Ratchet and Clank came out not including their mobile titles, but some of those were from their NC studio. I say leave them alone, you don't need to be worried about Insomniac.

God of War PS4 still doesn't even have an official name, and it's currently playable start-to-finish. That's a silly argument lol.

I just feel like if Spider-Man were coming next year we would have seen a gameplay demo by now

God of War is the official title, unless I missed something

I don't think they need to do either of those things. Batman: Arkham Asylum didn't come out near a film but was still a massive success, because the quality was there. Sony will surely understand that a high quality game is more important in the long term than a release date which is slightly better from a marketing perspective. Plus, Spider-Man is a perennial brand so he'll still be popular and well-known even if the game isn't launching 18 months after Homecoming is out.

You run the risk of sales drop if your game has no hype/not generating excitement.

Two success stories this holiday season are BF1 and Pokemon, both games that from the market offset, has been successful at generating a lot of interest and excitement around the product.
Apologies for the late response:
Yeah I should have mentioned bf1 and pokémon when I wrote my post. Having a strong interest or excitement is certainly a factor; bf1 had a really strong debut trailer with millions of views on Youtube and a beta that has been positively received(and a string of videos by the devs that i'm probably forgetting). As for pokémon, I'm not that well versed but I think the success of pokémon go in attracting new fans and rekindling interest of those who might have moved on certainly helped to amplify the sales success for pokémom sun and moon.

Again, weak logic. Videogame development is a creative process, more people != short development time, especially since it's going to be Insomniac's biggest and most ambitious game to date.
Oh, I know how development can work, and that a bigger team doesn't necessarily mean a quicker development process, but I fail to see why one would imagine it being a 2018 title. They could start sharing media with the press next Spring already, have the game playable at E3 and release it during the Holiday season or Fall.

When it comes down to it all, there's nothing pointing to a 2018 release, while there's nothing pointing toward a 2017 release either. We can only guess at this point.

Spider-Man doesn't even have a name. It's not coming out next year.

This is a weak logic as well. A name can be announced at any point. It's not that important right now.

You say this but then earlier in your very same post you say things like "I fail to see why one would imagine it being a 2018 title" and gave pretty silly reasons why you thought it was a 2017 game.

If I really must post my reasons why I think it's a mid 2018 release, it's because:
a) I'd rather overshoot a release date than get disappointed if it does come out later,
b) They didn't show anything at PSX, which indicates to me that it's a bit further away and
c) Red Dead Redemption 2 is going to be fucking enormous in late 2017 and Sony's going to do everything they can to tie that game to PS4.

Those first reasons you mention there are silly too. Just because you don't wanna be disappointed doesn't make it more likely to hit 2018. And them not showing anything during PSX is no indication at all. They could choose to do a media reveal at any time. I just don't think you make much sense.

i wonder if Sony will expand the Guerilla Games Studio if Horizon turns out to be a major sucess.
RPG Games take a lot of time and im not sure they would wan't to wait another 5-6 Years for a Sequel

Guerilla is already a fairly big studio, I don't it would have to expand all that much.

It would also help that they would have the foundation in place for the sequel. The sequel won't take as long as the first game because of how much is established from making the first one.

Granted, if the sequel has multiplayer, that may add on to the dev time.

Call them silly if you like, they're not outright illogical like your reasoning was.

I won't actually be disappointed, I haven't cared about release dates (or delays) for years. But having said that, I didn't say it made 2018 more likely, where on earth did you get that from? I was pointing out why I tend to be more pessimistic with my release window predictions, I set my expectations relatively low.

Not showing anything at PSX is an indication because Sony almost always shows far more than just a short trailer this far out. Uncharted 4 got its first big gameplay demo a year out from its (initial) release date. Back when Horizon was still a late 2016 game, we already had two sizeable gameplay demos of it by this point last year. Spider-Man, on the other hand, hasn't even been shown to the press yet.

Horizon would've gone into full production after Shadow Fall shipped in late 2013, so that's just over three years. Though yeah, there'll be another 2-3 years of pre-production too.

Guerrilla's next game should be from the Shadow Fall pre-production team, so it'll be a while before we get a Horizon 2. That's a good thing IMO, I wasn't a big fan of how they seemed to rush Killzone 3, they need more time to figure out what worked and what didn't.

My predictions for announced games

June 2017: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
August 2017: Knack 2
September 2017: Gran Turismo Sport
December 2017: Dreams
March 2018: God of War
May 2018: Days Gone
November 2018: The Last of Us part II
February 2019: Spider-Man
September 2019: Death Stranding

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End was announced as just "Uncharted." I am confident that God of War will get a full title next E3.

I don't think they will, it is essentially a reboot.

Uncharted was an early "calm down, of course we're making a new Uncharted for the new generation console" type of annoucement. Just like Microsoft did with Halo at E3 2013. God of War is a soft reboot of the franchise.

You can't post an image like that SP, now I want a new Sly Cooper from youse guys.

Or an inFamous 3 starring Lucy Kuo in the main role, either is good.

I think there's a chance that a new Sly Cooper game will come out alongside the movie, like a Ratchet and Clank 2016 situation.

It'll probably be by Sanzaru, and that's fine with me because Sly 4 was fucking rad.

They just moved the release date for Horizon Zero Dawn up in the EU, so I'd be surprised if after that, they end up delaying the game.

I fully expect Detroit to release in 2017. It was revealed in 2015 and showed off quite a bit at this year's E3. At the very least, I doubt the game releases three years after its reveal in September 2018 when many of the big Sony games (Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ratchet & Clank, Infamous: Second Son, Knack, Killzone Shadow Fall, Bloodborne, The Order: 1886) came out within 1 or 2.

Continuing the trend above, this is my guess to the release windows:

2017 Q2: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, MLB
2017 Q3: Spider-Man
2017 Q4: Detroit: Become Human, Gran Turismo Sport, Knack 2
2018 Q1: God of War, Dreams
2018 Q2: Bloodborne 2/New Souls IP, MLB, Ratchet 2
2018 Q3: Days Gone
2018 Q4: Sucker Punch New IP
2019 Q1: Sucker Punch Expansion, Tearaway 2
2019 Q2: The Last of Us part II, MLB
2019 Q3: Death Stranding
2019 Q4: Studio Japan New Game

That's a pretty realistic estimate. Good job.

Wow, Sly is so small. I never considered them to be genuine animal sized. Does that make their building really small too? I always just imagined they were human sized but obviously animal people. Mind blown.
Heh, it's an homage to a Christmas Carol painting... Don't read too much into it.

I guess it's because I hadn't seen it on all on paper like that in a while, but Sony has some good stuff coming down the pipe!

oh totally forgot that there is also Steven Ter Heide at GG. Yeah he could be taking over the next project. So if GG goes the 2Teams/2Projects Way there is even more reasons to believe that the studio will get bigger over the years.

So I realized we could potentially know much of the PS4's exclusives up to the end of its run and possibly even into launch PS5 territory. Let's assume the PS5 releases Holiday 2019 (giving the PS4 a 6-year life), Death Stranding could be a cross-gen game, TLOUII will likely get a PS5 port, and games like Days Gone could release earlier that year. I'm sure Sony's still got some tricks up their sleeves as we still don't know what SP is working on, but the next few years look to be covered. It's good we're getting games like Horizon towards the middle of this gen, because it sets the base for an excellent follow-up early on in the PS5's life.

Speaking of first party, I'm about to hop in to The Last Guardian :).

Enjoy! I was cautiously optimistic, but the game really won me over. A great story told partly through gameplay, with some really intense moments and some fantastic setpieces which I was not expecting. It may be my favorite Sony game of the year, and that's something considering I loved Uncharted 4, Ratchet & Clank, Gravity Rush Remastered and Alienation.

What do you mean? They've had the "two core teams, one in full production and the other in pre-production" structure since Killzone 3 at the latest but that doesn't mean they're going to turn that into developing two games in full production at at time. As I pointed out on the last page, that structure is designed to cut back on mass layoffs.

How can it get delayed when it's already pushed forward in the uk? Plus it reached beta a few weeks back

Just a gut feeling. When I have the game in my hands, then I'll believe it but until then, im literally expecting a delay announcement within the next few weeks. Hope it doesn't since it's my second most wanted game of Q1 2017 but just a gut feeling.

As for Detroit, I hope it comes out in 2017 since it's on my list but I don't see Sony releasing games in the Fall/Holiday season around the heavy hitters. September is a good date for GT Sport so it can go head to head with Forza Motorsport 7 and only reason I have Days Gone listed as October 31st is because I think that it would be a good Halloween zombie type open world game.

Who knows though? Have to wait and see what happens. My friend thinks that the only major game being released in 2017 is Horizon and maybe GT Sport but sees every other game as 2018 or later.

I see my list as what Sony plans to do and once those games get released from their respective studios, I believe that they will start working on games for PlayStation 5 simply because I don't see Sony giving Microsoft more than a two year "head start" with Scorpio.

I see Sony releasing their major exclusives in the last two years so they can easily transition into PlayStation 5. For example, Horizon comes out in February (or whenever) and GG goes straight into developing the sequel for PlayStation 5 so it can be ready early on in the next console's life cycle.

This is all just my own hunch. It just seems too weird to announce all these games from all their major studios that are years away if there wasn't a bigger plan around it all. I just see that bigger plan as these are the games that you're getting for PlayStation 4 and hope you enjoy them but after all of these are released, it's onto PlayStation 5.
