Without knowing how exactly its implemented its difficult to say much about it, but conceptually the idea makes a lot of sense.
Its somewhat surprising its coming from Nintendo in fact, as this is the sort of thing I would have expected from Microsoft.

That's what's been said no? It's just for the chat and group lobbies - there will be in game matchmaking.

The quote mentions that's how you'll do matchmaking/lobby creating. That implies it has some deeper backend that influences how to setup custom games online, unless he misspoke.

If that's the case then this isn't anything we don't already know.

So I gotta have my phone charged and next to me and dedicate it to the freaking online system???

. Lol, this. I was just thinking this. So, I now need to keep my phone charged or have an extra battery with me to keep this going. Nice!

Also, I suppose I should thank you for forcing me to use either create a hotspot for the device plowing through cellular data, or finding a wi-fi hot spot I have the ability to access or pay to access one to fuel this app's ability to work with another service I pay for. .... Ooookaaayyy....

Honestly, unless you are telling me there was just no way this thing could have been incorporated into the Switch itself, which I don't buy into, this makes zero sense.

Honestly, it sounds like Nintendo partnered with some company or bought some company to create this solution and it is about making money forcing people to use it somehow.... but, I have zero evidence to support that idea.

This post isn't by me, it's by a guy with the same username as me.
Man, this is ridiculous.

Now kids that want to play online when parents aren't together will need their their own smartphone.

Our the house will need to have a "switch smartphone" just to handle this.

Have you guys considered that they don't want to have these features become standard, and they are actively trying to tank the notion right out of the gate? Maybe they don't want the responsibility of having to learn, pay the fees for, and maintain any of this? Not only that, if these features become standard, then they have to implement them in all things. And take the creativity outside of the sandbox. They'll also having to officially compete with every other service out there that does it better, across all formats, and include all of the features and programs that we use elsewhere that they can't oversee. They can't control that message. Doesn't make their walled garden look so pristine.

I hope this is sarcasm.

Yeah, making your console look worse after the disaster of the Wii U is certainly the direction to go.

Could you elaborate on how it makes sense?

So none of those things can be handled natively on the console? Are they for real? How about making it optional, a complement but not the only way to do it?

Ah cool, so in addition to buying the console and paying for their online service, I also have to pay more to ATT to be able to set up my hotspot and tether to another device. How convenient!

Don't forget eating through your monthly data plan much quicker using the app. More money for Nintendo's online service.

Maybe I'm just playing devils advocate here but honestly who doesn't have their phone with them 24/7 in 2017? I don't leave home without it and I always have it next to me when I am home.

It's silly that so far we don't have information on it being integrated into the hardware but we haven't seen the OS actually function yet. People should just chill until more info is out there.

Honestly I'm imagining it being a more robust version of the PS App. You can chat and see who's online from it and shop (kinda). This will just also allow you to voice chat and join other people's games.[/QUOTE]

What you are imagining isn't what's being said here, though. A lot of people are trying to find excuses when their own PR person is slinging something different.

Even if I have my phone with me, I don't want to use it while I'm gaming like this. It should be optional, and there's no excuse when their competitors have been doing it for ages, let alone better.

What's even worse is that people will be charged for this bullshit service which is comparatively more garbage.

This proves that Reggie is just a shit shovelling PR guy. Not one single person who was in charge of a company would say this and mean it.

Of course reggie doesn't have that much pull, didn't it come out years back that literally everything comes out from the headquarters in Japan and everyone else just follows suit?

He's certainly not a gamer if he can say this shit with a straight face. Let alone as an employee with what clout he has he isn't tearing down Nintendo HQ in a hulk storm to get shit changed.

Imagine any of the somewhat gamer focused Sony bunch (Shu/Shawn) being cited saying some of the corkers Reggie is coming out with around an app...

They're being really confusing on how this mobile app works. Is everything handled through the app? Does the app merely provide status of available games? How will voice chat work? Is the app part of the subscription, or is it a separate purchase? All they're doing is raising more questions than answering. They better explain this nonsense close to launch. It's great that they want to tie mobile devices into the Switch ecosystem, but I question their methods of doing this.

Yup. It could be great if they nail it. But FFS they need to get on top of their messaging with this app thing. What's trickling out sounds aweful without the whole picture.

I'm going to give it a chance before I call it out for being complete garbage. I have a couple of tablets and older smart phones laying around.

If they come up with and easy to use app it'll be fine.

So a smartphone is essentially a required accessory for the Switch? That's pretty stupid. There's plenty of people without smartphones, or with really old low powered ones.

Hopefully the Switch is online capable without use of the app being required. Still pretty stupid if voice chat and lobbies are ONLY available on the app.

It's astonishingly bizarre.

No bald cap? Lies!
Reggie slowly drip feeding weird ass, incomplete cryptic info about this is just terrible.

Next interview he does he's going to tell us they'll only accept payment with turn of the century German Marks.

By making their online service subscription based, they're already officially competing with every other service. That's the issue. That those services are better would be irrelevant if Nintendo put forth something competent but all signs so far show otherwise. Inferior online structure by requiring an external device, inferior value with their monthly game rental, et cetera.

Im assuming this is just an app to accompany the service on the Switch. It's not like they'd make the only way to matchmake/VC limited to just the phone app.....Right?

I think it could be great, but Nintendo needs to show us why it is a good idea asap because the negative reactions right now aren't great for their image.

My windows phone life seems to be coming to an end.

But I kinda feel like I shouldn't have to buy a new phone just to be able to play Splatoon...

Nintendo Revolution 2: Electric Boogaloo

What's next, Switch only being able to be attached to one Smart device at a time?
