Square really needed this to restore interest and strength recognition with the brand but kudos Tabata pulled it off.

I do think 14 also helped with its constant praisal and being open to the community with yoshi and the community, just the same Tabata did with fans and expos and addressing development fees back. They gambled and work hard and it paid off.

Now bring me Ito FF!!!!!

You know it's not happening. We all do.

There's no hope in this world for Ito making a mainline FF again. Too many floors to clean.

It hurts, but it's better to just accept it.

Honestly, SE needs better writers specifically scenario writers also they have a dire need for better scenario and voice acting directors. Its the one thing that they are absolutely lacking right now.

And its not that they've been particularly good before either. The jump to higher fidelity hasn't been kind to the way they portray stories with the typical overacted animations clashing violently with the voice acting.
Preach. Been saying this. They have to finally step their game up in that regard :/

I'll take Roberto Ferrari designs over current Nomura designs any day of the week, so I hope he continues working on character designs with some mainline FF titles going forward.

Great for them.
Hopefully with XVI we won't have an other troubled development.
With XII Matsuno had health issues, with XIII they couldn't do HD towns, with XIV they had to remake the whole game and with XV they had to release the game without reaching its full potential.

If he'll want to work for another FF. His view on how XV's development was sounded so bitter.

He's working on 7 remake with Nomura. I think he did Avalanche.

OP might want to add it did well on Xbox too according to this:

I don't know what's more surprising FF doing well on Xbox, or that a spin off Forza title makes the top 10 and a brand new Gears doesn't, do we have any numbers on how Gears 4 did? Seems like a massive disappointment saleswise. Hopefully the devs can go back to that spy game or something new.

No they don't. People will buy it regardless and make all kinds of excuses as proven and this is all after FF13. So why do they have to do anything.
I want them to of course but they aren't exactly pressured to do it seeing how well FFXV did. All kinds of bad practices(like story gaps that are clearly felt, outsourcing stuff to other medium, etc) really that had 0 effect on FFXV success.

Well i'm glad that makes a FFXVI all the more likely. Shame that the final product was unfinished though. Gives the wrong idea to first timers.

Good going for Tabata, FF franchise, and JRPGs. Even Xbox crowd stepped up. I really liked the game and it was probably the most "fun" game I played in 2016.

Yes, there were issues with the storytelling and Ch13 was pretty bad but overall it was still a very good game. Glad to hear it sold well. Sounds like US pulled ~2.5 million sales or so, Japan 1 million and the rest of the world 2.5 mil. Don't forgrt that digital was in the picture vs XIII so revenue is even better for SE then it seems.

I think the reason Persona 5 has issues breaking out in the west is that it's literally anime. Final Fantasy games have been pretty anime by game standards, but it also has a historical precedent of being like that so it gets a pass and has never gone to an extreme level.

I think fantastical elements, even ones with hyper realism like XV has, is more marketable in the rest of the world than being a Japanese teenager making friends in high school getting into metaphysical battles with gods, demons, and lingering doubts about homosexuality.

While a lot of people are angry Persona games don't get the same cred and sales as FF, I think for what game and what it's about it does exceptionally well.

It's really more prove that the masses care about spectacle. Good story is just a bonus to most.
Lot's more games that sell gangbusters are more spectacles than good stories(not that they can't have a good story but it's more a coincidence).
Whereas tons of great stories have not sold their games even half as well and are seldom million sellers. We don't even need to consider Persona.

Last of Us is really the better game to cite but one game does not prove a trend that's pretty clear by now.

I don't think a good story will overcome any other impeding factor in mainstream acceptance, but there's a reason I used Uncharted 4 as an example. If people are looking for spectacle, Uncharted 4 is not really the best game to buy. A lot of people were disappointed by the lack of setpieces and the pacing is the most criticized aspect of the game.

I think consumers definitely care about story, they just don't like going out of their comfort zone. Hell, my first contact with Persona was basically "hey, this looks cool, comes with an artbook, too. It's being well received, fuck it, I'll buy it". How many people do this? I don't even do this anymore. And I'm an anime boy, imagine for the more mainstream audience who doesn't particularly like the art style.

aw yeah

to celebrate Square should give us the recipe for that dessert Ignis keeps trying to make for Noctis

every single variation of it

They should've included a little cutscene for when you make it in-game :(

While this is indeed funny, I fully expect that Persona 5 is going to have the best launch in franchise history in the West as well. Good times for big time JRPG fans

It definitely will. Heck I'm feeling it'll reach 1m-1.5m WW (including JP), maybe more.

But no way in hell will it sell as much as a mainline FF game. Those who think so are either rabid people or just plain crazy.

I think 150k would qualify as the best Persona launch month in US hostory.

Yeah I don't have the numbers on me but your very likely correct. I think we should be cautious and not expect any insane 1+ million performance from it like we are seeing with Final Fantasy, but I fully think 300k+ is very much achievable

Oh yeah no question there. Final Fantasy is a much much larger franchise than Persona

I'm currently playing through this and it's my first Final Fantasy. So far I'm finding it incredible (probably not caring about it along the suffered 10+ years await helps it).
