Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

So picked up my copy yesterday, walked 30 minutes from work during lunch due to stores bring sold out. This is my first Yakuza game, after hearing great stuff before launch (especially that chicken gif lol) and since its a prequel I can follow the story.

Only did chapter 1 but all I can say is "wow, that's rad!". Really enjoying it so far and can't wait to put some more time into it today and see what crazy stuff happens.

I'm playing on hard and the lead up to the end of chapter boss was quite tough and the boss himself was a bastard lol. Took me a handful of goes to finally beat him but it was satisfying when I did.

Wow, I take it back the Doll Girl quest gives a nice item for the effort (It's a
Security Wallet to drastically decrease shakedown penalty
) and that ending... Majima's so cool ;_;

And while I'm at it: Shoutouts to the cult quest reward as well. Being able to
see all nearby encounters+Mr.Shake
is really helpful!

I know, right? Majima is great.

Now, I wish he had a
little daughter
. He would've been an amazing
dad

One of the few side missions (in recent years) that I just really wanted to beat the living shit out of the guy. Wrecking him with the bat would've been ideal but the cramped space forced me to use thug style. So that bastard got off easy in my opinion.

Majima is a sweet-heart. Who would've thought he'd be the emotional hook for this game. What a time to be alive.

I agree he was scum (to the point where I questioned if I should be laughing at this, considering how many frauds like him exist in real life) but I found his final fate to be the definition of poetic justice!

The Maharaja Showdown substory is driving me insane

I lose by like 200 points on easy every time

e: he's been getting like 4900 points pretty consistently and then when i finally get above that he just gets 5700

The disco mini game is garbage I hate it

Now this motherfucker is getting 6400. On easy. Fuck this

Yeah, for real. Especially for us who knew him from the previous entries. It's so cool seeing him like this.

And yeah the guy was a pos. It's unfortunate that there are actual people out there that are just as bad as him. Well, at least I got to beat this scumbag so thanks for that Yakuza.

Finally got started with this tonight... it left a very good first impression. The combat system feels really promising so far. It's good to be playing Yakuza again.

In case you haven't, try to pay attention to the beat rather than the shrinking boxes. Get into the rhythm and the timing is easy, then you just gotta worry about making long combos.

The thing that keeps tripping me up is the steps. And without doing enough steps I'm getting killed. He does 350+ to my like 170, so in my panic to try and do more steps I'm losing the beat

You could try doing the same amount of steps every time. As long as the beat stays consistent, it should be relatively "easy" to string even long combos, less chances to panic either. You could also do the fever thing in case you lose the rhythm/feel like you're going to lose it any second, gets you bonus points and a chance to relax for a second.

But yeah, it's hard.

This substory was really interesting and the design of the cult leader reminded me of Asahara Shoko who was behind Tokyo subway sarin attack in '95. I really like it when they put in allusions to real social issues in Japan – even if it is played for laughs.

Yakuza 6 Spoiler!:
They bring Suzuki and his cult back for another substory in Yakuza 6 and paint him in a different light. I'm so in love with these games...

There's no better way to start your day than beating Mr. Shakedown in Hard difficulty and replenish your wallet <3

Now stuck at work for 8 more hours until I get to play again :(

Whenever I see the big lug, I run away like a girl, can't stand his two hit kills!

Edit: So I am fairly early in the game, but I have a Q, I'll spoiler it just incase.

Can you transfer weapons / items between Majima and Kiryu?

Chapter one done in hard mode.

Note to myself: Never fight a boss without healing items again
It was so hard it took me 30 tries minimum

Advance further in the story.

EDIT: I know
you can transfer money but actually I'm not sure about weapons/items. You could transfer them in the last chapter of Yakuza 4 and 5 but I'm not sure about this one.

And I don't know why I spoilered that either lol, it's not a spoiler.

It's weird, dare I say bordering on a racial slur?

Hmm - since "soy sauce" face (醤油顔) is used by Japanese to describe typically Japanese facial features, I'm not so sure.
A "sauce face", however, is used to describe facial features, that are different from the norm (longer).
I guess the practice to classify some faces as "typically" Japanese and others as not is totally dumb to begin with...

Knowing Japan, it's not unlikely. I'll remove the pictures just in case. Would appreciate if you do the same.

Done, just left a bad taste (sic) in my mouth.

Yo,
I just did a event which started out helping a kid get back his Dragon Quest 3 and ended with
him going back with his dad after his dad robbed a thug who robbed a high schooler who robbed the kid and the kid and dad are gonna bond over the game

......I like this game

Fuck, saw Mr. Shakedown earlier and he had 99 million on him. Got sucked into a side quest and by the time I got out of it he was gone.

Is there anywhere specific that Mr. Shakedown hangs out? I got the shrine perk about him taking a nap at the park, but I have no idea where the park is.

Not unlike calling a Mexican "Taco face", or a French person "Garlic head"?

I dont think it is in y0 but in y3 and y4 at least there is a so g about kamuro-cho

Finally finished Ch. 1, I don't know how some of you are blowing through the game so fast! That was a pretty great boss stage for just being the first chapter. Thank gods I stocked up on health items before going in though.

So does the game open up so that you have the down time to do whatever you want in the city without there being a constant nag to do the next plot point? Or is it more like FF where you just have to decide to ignore the narrative and hang out at the arcade all day? So far I haven't done any side activities because the game is always nagging me to go places.

Also, do your interactions with the other characters change based on your performance (i.e. how long you take to go meet someone), or is it always the same script? Like I noticed in one situation someone said, "Took you long enough", while another time someone said, "You made good time!"

There are three parks, so I think it just increases his chance of appearing at one of them

He's been hard to find for me. He just robbed me of like 15 million after one shotting me and I want revenge, but I haven't been able to find him at all.

You can just meander about from chap 2 onwards but by chapter 6, a lot of sidequests open up too.

Just explore and do stuff at your own pace. If there is any real pressure for you to get to the story destinations then roads will be unavailable. If they aren't, then you could waste dozens of hours just mucking about and the game won't care.

It doesn't really matter how long you take to reach objectives/characters. The game is designed around you being free to do as you please.

The game doesn't even tell you "visit phone booths to save your game" it just expects you to magically know this before you stop playing.

Huh, pretty sure it tells you though? Either a general tip, or when you have to find one to make a call to further the story... very early in the game. I just finished chapter 1 and I'm pretty sure I remember reading text telling me about how saving works early on.

Pretty cool game so far. I've played 1 and 2 a tiny bit years ago, remember enjoying them but not finishing them for whatever reason.

In every Yakuza in the store magazines are they using actual magazine covers and the issues that were out at the time that i can find in real life?

I've tried researching magazines from their dates but I can't seem to find the actual covers of them.

Do they not mark Sub Stories on the map any more? That was one of my favourite new features in 5, and unless I'm missing something it seems to be gone here.

The dev team has ALWAYS implemented stuff based on real life. There are real foods, restaurants based off of existing restaurants, real TV personalities that have cameos and real alcoholic beverages.

The magazine covers are also real.

No, you have to discover them first but the next step is usually shown on the map.

There is an item
that you get later on that reveals the starting locations, will be handy for Premium Adventure Mode.

The only difference I see is that the term has been coined by the Japanese themselves. Still, classifying facial features as "typical" or "atypical" for a nation is weird racial theorizing imo so I would also refrain from using those terms when speaking Japanese.

Yeah, I feel you.

I'll be in Japan in a few months for the first time, and I've heard reports of restaurants turning away foreigners, which, coming from the UK is really, really odd, so it just perturbs me a little!

Thanks, that's good to know.

On another note, whoever programmed the map really went gung ho. Not only can you also zoom in/out with the right stick, but you can scroll the map with the touch pad. Can't believe a game actually used it for more than a button. And even more, you can do an iOS-esque pinch gesture with two fingers to zoom in and out. Salute to whoever coded all that.

What's odd to me is that for a city known for its subways, there doesn't seem to be any in the game? Maybe I just haven't found them, but it seems like cabs take their place. It feels a bit too videogamey that I can only take a cab from five spots. Oh well.

Also odd is how dirty the city looks. I've never been to Tokyo but everything I've seen of it is exceptionally clean streets, so seeing trash piled in the street a la NYC is kinda weird.

Yakuza 4 implemented Rooftops and an Underground Mall, and Y5 at least had the Underground Mall too (it also had like 4-5 cities so it can be excused for not having Rooftops).

The series has always had that layout of the city and using the cabs to get from place to place, and it works so I don't really see a reason to change it. If you could just fast travel constantly, then the fun of exploration is lost and the game is largely designed around that.

I love that the streets are grimy and trash filled, it harkens back to Yakuza 1 which showed a "dirtier" and more violent side of Japan that most games don't show. Sure in the newer games, the streets get cleaner but in this game, it's all about decadence baby.

Almost 14 hours and just started chapter 3 lol.

The only thing I dislike about these games is the fact that nothing's shared between characters. It'd be game-y as fuck, but I think it'd be nice if money and items were shared between characters, maybe even some upgrades like max health+ and so on.

e: no, it looks like the completion list is at least shared. It's a start.

Ah, that makes a lot of sense, I wondered if it were the same thing, since it was so similar to this side mission but I'd forgotten if it were 5 or 0 where the side mission had originated in and I wondered if they were just copying earlier side missions for the series. I love it when Yakuza takes these small characters/plots and then picks up on them in later games, its part of the reason I enjoy all the side activities so much.

From a plot side of things that wouldn't really make much sense, but you will unlock a side mission later in the game for both Kiryu and Majima where you can transfer money from one city to another. Its dead handy to get Majima leveled up as Kiryu can make money just much easier/faster than Majima can.
