There's a large crate in the middle of the road blocking traffic, no one can see or hear what is inside. The crate contains either nana ruth receiving her weekly dialysis treatment inside the crate to protest the block granting of Medicare, or a black lives matter protestor attempting to bring attention to the disparity in police violence along racial lines. The box will block all traffic on the road for at least two hours. You can choose to ram the box killing the occupants and immediately unblocking the traffic jam or join them inside the box for tea extending their protest for an additional 30 minutes. What do you do?

A football player made the least disruptive protest in history and millions, literal millions, threatened him or told him to get in line and shut his ass up.

FOH with this right way to protest nonsense.

Exactly. No one is ever gonna be satisfied with any kind of protest that they can't ignore. Bunch of fragile ass pansies can't handle seeing a problem in front of them that they don't want to acknowledge. "But Imma be late" this. "But nana Ruth" that. Miss me with that stupid ass bullshit.

He made less of a political statement than Tom Brady, who placed the MAGA hat in front of the Gillette logo in his locker

I mean, idk if it's low expectations for police dealing with protestors, but the takedown wasn't that bad. They held them down, didn't beat them senseless, looked around to assess the situation. And make sure they were safe, then continues the arrest without incident.

Yeah it could have been handles without the takedown, but it also could have been much worse without repricussion.

As for protests blocking traffic... I don't care as much as other people seem to. Protests are about getting attention for a cause and it's still peaceful as long as it's not blocking ambulance or firetrucks. Idk.

As a university student, if I missed a test, midterm, or exam because of a protest stopping traffic flow is that enough to be allowed a make up date for it? If so, then it's fine. If not, then having it jeopardize my marks and my future wouldn't be right. I'd imagine though a school would be understanding as long as I had proof. These are after all unprecedented times we live it.

Am I the only one that watched the video with the song "boom bitch get out da way" thug life playing in my head? Lol

Funny how they bully regular people going to work but run away in an instant when police shows up. So much for anarchism, revolt and rebellion against the system.

Police should have beaten them up on the ground after tackling them.

Yeah, and give em a good tasering while they're at it.

Wait, what's wrong with you?! Sadistic.

They usually are from my experience and a friend's when both of us got caught up in protests in the past. You just need to explain the situation. If it's massive, it's on the news and they can understand and reschedule. It kinda like a freak snow storm just showed up. Really, people who bring up the hypothetical "this protest might make people show up late and get them fire" arguement doesn't take into account that people typically understand if something outside their control causing their employee, student, whatever to be late, especially if it's a mass protest that is halting traffic.

Advocating violence towards friendly protests, disgusting. It's people like that which allowed fascist states to grow. We should respect their right to protests however they wish as allowed by the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The freedom of peaceful expression and assembly must not be restrained.

No kidding. Impeding traffic can get you a body blow now? Stupid shit

Not stupid at all. Impeding a public transport bus is the dumbest shit ever, that's no protest, that's disruption with no clear tactic, or thought.

So fuck them. I could be biased tho, I relied on public transportation for along time.

holy shit people are cheering this? did we watch the same video? you all have such a boner for cops that you want to see people thrown to the fucking ground just for standing in traffic?

Did you forget who the president is?

You think someone that would vote a orange turd pretending to be a human being wouldn't be okay with fascist violence against protestors?

Would you body check bus/train staff who are striking? After all, you rely on them, so if they're not letting you use public transport, means it's grounds for assault.

I rely on public transit now.
In that city.
Literally 10 blocks away from that location.
It wasn't worth that.
PPD's responses to most protests is egregious.
It's why the ACLU just called em out.

Police should have beaten them on the ground? What the fuck? Are you actually advocating police brutality? You must be really pleased with the growing police state, then.

Seriously, what the fuck did I just read, and on gaf of all places. Disgusting.

Americans are amazing, you're endangering the whole world and you still have the gaul to moan about protesters blocking traffic. This world is fucking done.

It really is insane.

We're about to have a trade war with China and Mexico.
Might be instrumental in killing/significantly weakening the UN and NATO.
Women's, voters', and minority rights are under attack.
The government is about to accelerate global warming on a whim.
Free press is being attacked.
The government blatantly lies to its people about stupid things.

Do all of you road and traffic champions understand what they are protesting? The changes just around the corner from Trump & company are going to alter your lives much more than a blocked street.

But lecture away! I know you guys love these opportunities.

It's really sad how some are so short sighted. We need these protests right now, or you can all prepare to kiss your freedom goodbye.

Do you think stopping traffic in Portland is actually going to prevent any of the above?

Meanwhile it does help screw up the lives of people who probably didn't even vote for Trump.

It didn't really screw any of our lives up at all.

Trump's very first action in the white house being one that makes it harder for people to purchase houses? That screwed some Portlander's lives up. Definitely.

Protesting often isn't about getting the public to like you. It is about forcing the powers-that-be to hear your grievances.

Okay, I hear this over and over again. Until America becomes a full-on fascist state (and we are NOT there yet) the ultimate powers-that-be IS the public. They have voting power, and if you make enemies of them they will vote against you in the next election and all your sacrifices will have helped your enemies.

Seems people only support protesting as long as its doesn't inconvenience them. The second it does, they're fine letting the police go wild on protesters.

Ya I doubt people would be supportive if they were stuck in traffic with a sick kid in the car, late for a job interview, or any other such situation. Seeing cops chasing off protesters would be a relief.

All these anti-protest turkeys are casting their lot in with the fascists. Protest is about disruption. Business should be impeded. Our daily routines should be impeded. Fuck your normal routine. We just inaugurated a mentally-ill know-nothing as president who's being puppeteered by either one of the most prominent figures in the modern white nationalist movement, or the Russian government... Or both, I dunno. Either way, we left 'normal' behind a while ago.

Oh, so this is "Nana Ruth-ing", right? I asked earlier but I don't think I got an answer.

This and Frozenprince post have no lies detected. Anyone who didn't do the right thing is a helluva lot more inconvenient.

Gfoh if you have a problem with protests blocking roads. I'm sure yall are up in arms every time there's a fucking parade too.

TL;Dr protests are supposed to be disruptive because you aren't paying attention in the first place.

If the messaging is too quote unquote mean for you to let that sink in, it might after your tantrum is over.

Okay lets say that I give you that the goal of protest is to cause public disruption:

Why do you expect this to result in the public putting pressure on their leaders to resolve your problems as opposed to putting pressure on their leaders to remove the proximate cause of their disruption (ie you) ? Because that appears to be exactly what is happening and exactly what a reasonable person would expect to happen based on human nature. If you're (especially deliberately) annoying the hell out of them people are more inclined to want you to go away not to put pressure on their representatives to resolve your issues especially since you know you're deliberately causing them to dislike you particularly.

ETA - Note that I do not approve of the ridiculously over violent approach that American police seem to take to everything. Protesters should definitely be given the chance to disperse peacefully and escalation of force should be gradual.

You forgot Nana Ruth dying in the ambulance stuck in traffic.

Protests in Portland are a way of life. No matter who's in office, there's always causes to fight for. If you live here, you pretty much expect them to go down and inevitably block traffic. You also get a sense of where they happen and what times, so if you aren't participating, you plan around it. Pioneer Square, the spot where the light rail trains meet downtown is a major transit junction and a popular spot for protests for instance.

As for the police response, it was definitely overdone, but the new mayor likely doesn't really know the score yet and is trying to look like he means business as the new guy. The anarchist rioting stuff from November probably spurred some of this response.

Article even says they spend 4.5 hours blocking roads and streets, I get how people will be outraged over right to protest but its not shock the police got to the point where they jumped on them

Maybe not, but they sure as hell would remember it.

Nana Ruth hypotetically died in one of those hypothetical ambulances that get hypothetical stuck while people protest.

Don't see how that had anything to do with what I originally typed but okay.

Good on the cops though if people are protesting with the only intention on disrupting the lives of random people.
