UWP Games coming to Xbox One and Scorpio

https://www.neowin.net/news/microso...es-are-finally-coming-to-the-xbox-one-in-2017

It was already known to be the case, but that's nice to have a confirmation.

Basically using the latest SDK developers now can develop full games on Xbox that now have the same system level access of old Xbox games had (previously UWP on xbone was limited to the OS VM and had limited resource access).

I also believe that they are getting rid of the two OSes setup on xbone and game mode came to replace it, but that isn't confirmed yet.

What a "surprise" they are trying to give another incentive to developers to use UWP to get those sweet royalties from sales of pc software.

You do know that you can sell UWP software OUTSIDE of the store right? I mean just get the free version of Visual Studio, start a UWP project. DONE! you have an executable that just runs on any PC you would try to run it on. WOOOOW!

You know, you can even put it on steam if you wish. Not that you want to as the entire thing never was designed with games in mind originally.. but still.

I know on NeoGaf people think Sweeney is BOSS, but really on the case of UWP he has a lot of FUD to share. I don't like it either, but I refuse to pile on the hate pile with lies.

Another important news though non gaming, telerik (the bigger component provider I know) announced that their uwp controls will be open source.

This is huge because their controls are quiet awesome but a bit expensive (it's a $1000 license per developer), just for the winforms controls.

Ms must have opened the wallet big time to secure that as free to uwp (while for all others platforms is still paid)

I don't think people use VLC for the same reasons they use Kodi :p VLC just plays your own media right?

I misunderstood. I thought Kodi would've been possible for the same reason VLC is possible (and has been on the store since October last year).

Okay, but... what does this mean for games like Gears of War UE? Does this mean I have two separate Gears of War UE games with two separate achievement pools on the Xbox, or will Microsoft consolidate?

With laymans understanding, this seems immensely cleaner than the hybrid os setup; less overhead on the Xbox, consolidation of Windows core dev, and developing games for Xbox actually means developing for games for Windows as well.

Seems like they're delivering on the initial premise of UWP

I use Kodi for its original intention: to play my own media library (on my NAS in my case). I love the interface and customisable skins, it's unbeaten. The streaming pirates may well use it for other reasons by using unofficial plugins from third party repositories.

Xbox One games will soon have to be made to also run in 4K & so on for Scorpio & there will be no Scorpio exclusives so most likely they will just start making Xbox One games into UWP games that could be played on Xbox One , Scorpio & PC.

So how have recent UWP games been running?

From Reddit:

Hi, Jez from Windows Central here.
UWP games have been supported by Xbox One for a while, this slide is just reiterating today's reality. Indie game devs will still need to go through ID@Xbox to get their games on the store, and stuff like the SNES emulator will still need to go through the Windows UWP certification process. Seen some outlets speculating that Microsoft is opening up the floodgates here, but naw.

For old games, I believe it will be on a per game basis.

The gist of this announcement is that going forward the only way to publish games on xbone will be uwp, so basically they can get a Pc version "for free". Or likewise, if you chose to develop a Pc version of a game using uwp you can easily put that on xbone as well, with little extra cost.

Still need ID@Xbox approval.

I can see the need on the Xbox side, they need to ensure games support achievements, Xbox live features, multiple profiles etc.

But on the other hand, they shouldn't try to force emulators to go through id@xbox they should make it either allowed on all platforms or not.

I think Scorpio is just a smart way to force 3rd party devs hands into making UWP games.

Listening to Phil talk about it all being one game make me think that Scorpio games will be UWP games, so basically MS would be saying to devs why make a PC game & Xbox One game when you can make a UWP game that will play on Xbox One & high end PCs? And if you're worried about your game not looking the best on Xbox One we also have a high end Xbox One.

That didn't change anything to be fair... it is already that way.

If you need ID@Xbox approval you are already using the GameOS with full access to resources.

creators update seems to house a lot of things! great!
This is likely to appear in Redstone 3, which is the one after 1704/Creators.

Ok, so it's actually a non-news even.

Question:
Can we get homebrew goodies on this and 16bit emulators on this or no?
Because if not .. ((why is it we can get a wiiu emulator on a pc running MS OS but not on a console?))
Edit: I'm not talking about a wiiu emulator on xbox just general emulators homebrew stuff.
What's the difference?

It's odd because they make the process to make UWP seem easy or at least streamlined. Yet the windows store is barren of common multiplats like say watch dogs 2 and dishonored 2. Devs seem to shy away from it for some reason although putting a win32 on steam and uwp doesn't seem like that much work. Quantum break easily did it

I suppose it's a good way to block rubbish from going in the store but that gets filtered out with reviews anyway. Still, you can just apply here:
http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/Developers/id

Love how it says you have to sign an NDA before speaking to them though.

Those games have been in development before the Windows Store started to gain steam.
The developers wouldn't have time to develop a UWP game.

These days a large chunk of game developers release on the Windows Store which in turns gives more popularity to the Windows Store, which we have seen recently.

Developers should do a Windows Store and Steam release if possible, but XB1/Scorpio UWP support will outweigh Steam's influence.

Just curious, where in the OP link does it state that UWP will have access to the full resources on the Xbox? Is this just based off of game mode support and it being available to all games?

I skimmed the article but I didn't see it. Apologies if I missed something obvious.

What's the difference between this and the already existing UWP game support? Don't a few MS titles already run on UWP on Xbox? Making this more "opening the gates" for general third-parties?

I don't see it either. But I think that it's a deduction based on the explicit mention of games support for UWP on Xbox. You can already create a game in the UWP framework for Xbox but you'll be limited to the amount of resources that apps have access too and I doubt that you'll receive MS' approval for a release on the store.

Finally, a way to play all those UWP games that aren't already on Xbox. Like......

Can you cite any Windows App Store sales figures that we can compare to Steam sales figures?

I don't think this represents any change in Microsoft's policies. All games developed in UWP had to go through ID@Xbox in order to get onto Xbox already.

Maybe this opens the Xbox up to like more mobile type games like Candy Crush? I know they have a UWP variant.

But yeah, thinking about it, what the hell is different?

In terms of a developer perspective, Can Valve outweigh the advantages that UWP has?

Xbox/Windows 10 porting, Windows Holographic VR (UWP's version of SteamVR), multi architecture platform all with native performance vs a dominant market place and a VR ecosystem that is stuck on X86 and Win32?
