''Apocalypse Now - The Game'' live on KS with FF Coppola on board. Goal is $900K

Well given that typically kickstarters with a high goal like this fail if they don't get at least 1/2 their total within the first 48 hours this one looks boned.

I'm staying away from this. Even with Coppola's "involvement" it could still be a disaster. Project Phoenix and Untold Story made me learn this lesson the hard way that prominent people can let a Kickstarter prop their names up as a selling point and then end up either barely working on or leaving the project. Plus the Kickstarter page looks terribly amateur for something asking for close to $1M.

Welp. They're desperately pleading.

Also, they're not asking for $900,000 but an additional whooping $5,000,000 via their website! They're estimating that this Kickstarter will fail, and I believe it will.

Even if it doesn't fail, the pledge of $5Mill will fail terribly, and the game will be canned.

Good luck to them. Next time, show the damn prototype to public, or recreate movie scenes in the engine instead of posting quotes and screenshots from the movie as if it's some Bible that we will toss money at.

That was a lot of text that basically just says: Give us money, while we show you nothing.

Should have come up with this idea 3 years ago when I (and a lot other people) were Kickstarter suckers. Every board game I gave money to was terrible. Someone could try and Kickstart a Once Upon a Time in the West game and I wouldnt give them a nickel.

Seriously, this is either a totally incompetent team or it's an actual scam. The writing in this update is just mindboggling.

It has to be you You are like us now. You are on the river.

We’re working with one of the most beloved films ever made about one of the most controversial conflicts in world history.
We're asking for you to believe again. To help us make this game great.

We need your support.

I am personally, directly asking for your support.

Yikes...

I just read that update. Guy who wrote it sounds pathetic.

Plus..he said there has never been a good Vietnam game. Battlefield Vietnam and Bad Company 2: Vietnam say they hope your kickstarter is terminated with extreme prejudice.

Interesting actually lol. I started clicking through the video because I thought it was just footage from the movie. Then noticed it was in-game visuals once the player models came out. Still kind of surprised at the image quality. It doesn't look atrocious?

Still going to doubt because KS only produced a couple good titles in a sea of garbage.

edit: Watched a second time, little more obvious now what the game's going to be. Looks like it could be a Rambo-like on rails experience. Human models look "DECENT" but still pretty unconvincing. Animations are suspect. I'm hesitant to place much confidence in this project.

Publicists and executives and producers wanted to hold the prototype teaser trailer back for later release.

This seems a bit much. The in-engine prototype didn't look too terrible, honestly if they would have put that up at first I bet we'd be in a much different situation right now

Really? From what I've played, the majority of KS releases tend to be decent to great

Those are multiplayer only games though. There's never been a good narrative driven Vietnam game.

I couldn't even read the whole thing. Literally begging. Make me want to give you money by showing an enticing prototype, not by begging me to help fund the game!

Honestly, what do they expect? Show people the fucking prototype.

You would think they would have learnt this after John Romero's shooter last year fell on its arse because - you guessed it! - they talked it up and didn't show any footage. The days of KS projects getting excitedly funded by the audience based just on concepts and promises is well and truly over.

EDIT - also, what if they get the $900k through KS but fail to get the $5 million through their website - the game still gets cancelled?! Sounds like they need a lot more money than they'd initially implied.

Ready at the end of 2020? Wow, may as well throw my money into the toilet.

Must be of the most unprofessional kickstarters I've ever seen. Baffling considering how much money they are asking for.

I never really expected this to reach production and was expecting to cancel even if it did look like it may but I've cancelled my pledge now. I think there are better things to pledge my money to on Kickstarter.

I don't get why they can't just make a game that won't come with the licensing fees and baggage from fans.

Make a Vietnam war game with a non-combat focus that's not associated to Apocalypse Now. Make it for cheaper than this, in less time, and focus yourself on making a good game, not something a bunch of gatekeeper fans will probably be disappointed in anyway.

It boggles my mind how people who've been in the industry for a long time can't do that simple CBA based on the above.

I say this as someone who likes the film and works in the industry. This is not something I'd be willing to attempt. You will never top the film and shouldn't kill yourself trying to do something like this.

Funny enough, they don't even know which system its going to release on because they don't know which system will be popular in 2020. Yeah...

Botched KS reveal. They needed to have more content to entice gamers. Did they really think people would throw their money at this just because of the name? Licensed games don't really have a good track record lol.

And really...is Apocalypse Now really a name that means anything to a person under 35 years old?

They want an additional $5 Million through their website? Good luck.

Unless you're something like Star Citizen selling packages to "whales", that's not really possible.

I'm under 35 and it's my absolute favorite movie. I first saw it when I was 14 and was completely captivated by the madness and insanity. I also read a lot of Lovecraft when I was young, so it tied into the obsession with existential dread/horror I had.

Edit: and it was something we watched in high school as part of the section on the Vietnam War during American History.

Apocalypse Now is my favorite movie of all time... but im not giving them shit without them showing me its worth my investment.

If they really have Coppola's blessing then he should of atleast funded the project enough for them to have something to show

Raises hand

But then again, I have a thing for those kinds of stories

You know I dont mean everyone. Its a much harder pitch than something like the Scarface or Godfather game.

You might be underestimating the appreciation people can have for art.

Edit: as well, attitudes have changed when it comes to millennials and movies. Just because comic book movies and action movies are crazy successful, doesn't mean that the average 20-something has limited appreciation for things that don't immediately explode all over their faces. The rejuvenated interest in classic films is growing stronger and stronger.

Just make a stealth/action Vietnam game with weighty, hushed monologues. No reason to try for a nostalgia cash cow when it's damn near impossible to top or even live up to the source material.
