So paging through the positive and negative reviews, my sense is that it structurally is a pretty generic open world game, but the core combat gameplay and design, along with the surrounding systems of resources management, really puts it a head and shoulders above a genre that is starting to erode upon people.
Execution is everything

GG seemed very confident about thier game, reviews copies sent that early and embargo lifted a week before release is certainly a thing

I think the story helps it stand out as much as anything if these reviews are anything to go by.

Amazing scores.

Will drop to the 88 MC most likely (you can check RE7, Ni-Oh and almost any other game that came out recently, all dropped in 2-3 points at least), but still, great scores.

Fuck man this was one of my most anticipated games but with Zelda coming out in such close proximity I can't do both. I'll definitely be picking up some time in March.

Positively surprised, I was expecting low 8s all around but this is great, can't wait to play it!.. Right after I'm done with Nier and Zelda, why are these games coming out so close to each other, ugh. :(

Why? I'm hoping I'll love the game as reviewers apparently are, but there's nothing wrong with a healthy dose of skepticism for a developer that has been questionable in the past.

Guerrilla Games made one of the best shooter of all time on their 2nd try.

An amazingly solid albiet rushed game for the sequel. A flawed launch title, and the best handheld shooter ever made hands down.

Even I had my doubts that they could pull this off, but they are a fantastic developer, the only time they really seem to falter is when they are rushed. When given proper time to polish and flesh out games, we get classics Like KZ2, Mercenary, and now very likely Horizon.

Oh, damn it, how am I supposed to choose between Horizon and Zelda. Horizon or Zelda. Horizon or Zelda. Horizelda. Zelizon. Double damn.

I'm really pleasantly surprised about the positivity regarding the game's story, so that's something to really look forward to.

It's a combination of story, presentation, graphical awe, and fun factor really. Open world games is a genre just like any and Horizon just happens to be quite an amazing one at that.

It was expected. Sounds good to me.

Come on USGamer, this just sounds like nit-picking to justify the score...

I mean, fuck, isn't that most open world games ever? Seems unfair that it's the main complaint of this game. I mean, was anyone going into this game not expecting side quests that involved doing...you know, the main mechanic of the game?

I didn't go into the new Tomb Raider games expecting to NOT kill people.

Yea it is, "interesting" review for sure.

When paging through the reviews, at least the 5-6 I checked, the assessment of the story (either positive or negative) didn't seem to impact any notable variance in the score relative to the other points, so I left it out of my summary.

I'm sure that differed in some other reviews.

Well congrats to Guerrilla Games, you've proven most doubters (including me) completely wrong. Hope to see more well made games from them in the future.

I smell a new wall of shame cooking. Might not top the U3 Eurogamer atrocity, but teeth-gnashing over one poor review always makes for good toilet reading in the morning.

Only worried abit about the length. 96% completion is 56 hours is not much. Guess need to hear some more player feedback.

We Got This Covered 4.5/5
Now that I've spent 40-plus hours with one of my most anticipated games of the year, how does it line up with the expectations I had for it? Well, I'm happy to say... quite beautifully. Horizon Zero Dawn is a stunningly gorgeous game, an awesome open world action-RPG that overcomes the gameplay conventions of the genre by giving you so many options on how to tackle combat. It does stumble a bit trying to tell a cohesive story, but I was too caught up in exploring all the little details of the world to let that bother me. If you've got a PS4 and you're looking to totally lose yourself in a fully-realized universe bursting with things to discover, there aren't many better choices than Guerrilla Games' fresh new IP.

56 hours is not much?

When you sit back and think of this it's pretty astounding that it's getting these high reviews. A genre the studio never tackled before, and the first time they really stepped out of Killzone and they come out with something like this? Good on Guerilla.
