Edge #304 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild special

tried to sum up that podcast because it keeps getting brought up and makes some really good points. so since it's about zelda austin does most of the talking and comparing and it should be noted that he didn't like horizon as much as the other host patrick (?) who thought the game was excellent with a few flaws. there are so many points being made so it's long but it was a really good discussion.

[...]

-playing zelda and horizon back to back made him realize that maybe open world fatigue isn't actually a thing and we as gamers should make the harder conclusion of zooming in and realizing that specific game isn't executing

Interesting point. Wonder if I'll feel the same after Zelda.

Why can't there be a vocal majority in favor of Skyward Sword? I know you're all out there.

You're just too damned quiet. Make some noise.

The Zelda cycle begins anew

The Zelda cycle was never real.

SS is top tier Zelda for me.

1. ALttP
2. OoT
3. SS

if it wasnt for Nostalgia i'd probably put ALttP as 3rd. Fantastic game brought down by a repeated boring boss and a lack of exploration. Everything else I loved. Best dungeons and story in the series with some of the best music and art.

And I never had an issue with the controls so best gameplay for me as well!

I fucking love SS and I'm angry that I can't find my golden controller.

But yeah, I'm not gonna argue all day and night with people whose main criticisms are often rooted in impatience and inability to perform motion controls.

I loved Skyward Sword. I ended up putting 45hrs into it. Didn't like it the first time I played it, but when I actually got off my lazy ass and put some effort into the controls, I fell in love immediately.

and inability to perform motion controls.

..not always the fault of the player in the case of the wii
but I also didn't give it too much of a chance either, so maybe I didn't give it enough GUSTO

however most of my experience playing motion games on wii came down to 'this shit doesn't fucking work a majority of the time it should' :(

Edge mentioning that the dungeons arent substantial and are hardly the complex network of puzzles weve come to expect is killing my hype a lot. Im interested in screwing around in the open word and finding stuff and the combat looks great but thats more of a distraction for me than what I wanted to be the main part of the game. A bunch of mini dungeons isnt enough either. I was fine with four dungeons if they were long and intricate but this is sounding lame.

yeah, it'll be interesting. personally I would love more engaging open worlds so if Zelda is really nailing it like previews make it seem then I would love for other devs to see what can be adopted into their own stuff.

also my favorite point was probably austin saying that shrines feel like Nintendo's take on Portal levels. that one thing made me damn excited.

that'd be meh but if shrines really are like Nintendo style Portal levels that increase in difficulty as the game goes on for me personally that's going to alleviate a lot.

Skyward Sword has:
The best story in the series

Nope, that belongs to MM

2nd best OST in the series

If the best is OOT, then the second best is Wind Waker

Great dungeons

There was... the Cistern, and the ship, which was more like a mini-dungeon. The rest ranged from mediocre (in terms of modern Zelda dungeons) to just average.

Great characters

Ghirahim was the only real standout along with Impa

Fun combat (when it works)

Is defeating the same enemies multiple times - the same exact way - throughout the entire game - fun? I found it tedious, and disliked the artificial difficulty created with the spotty controls

Great art style

Very rarely impressive, most of the time the game looked washed out and dull.

Hmm yeah seems like they should have made them elaborate...a real spectacle when you discovered one.

Oblivion

Fetishing muscular manly men in skintight hosery
Ok.

(I'm not the biggest fan of the character design, but this game did have some top-notch stuff.)

Well, okay I don't have a huge problem with those pics you posted, but that doesn't explain how they were able to come up with that purple octopus thing. In fact, I think it makes the situation even worse.

Skyward sword is great and I understand why edge gave it a 10. I thought the game did everything it could possibly do with motion controls and really justified them as a gameplay mechanic not to only be used in games like wii sports. Really the worst parts were Fi always interrupting and fighting that one boss like 8 times. I thought everything else about the game was made superbly and is one of my favorite zelda's.

Also, speaking of poor motion controls, I've noticed that when my sensor bar is located underneath the TV I've had a lot more issues with controls as opposed to when the bar is on the top. So that could have been one reason why the controls didn't work for some

I don't know who was worse. Ghirahim constantly appearing and subsequently getting his ass kicked while spouting the same "I don't have time to squash you now" line or Fi's constant, never ending interruptions.

Skyward Sword had some high highs in the series (the Ancient Cistern, pretty much anything in Lanayru) but it is marred by a lot of questionable at best design choices. 2 out of the 3 areas in Hyrule simply are not fun to play.

I think Austin makes a really great point here, I tought I just had open world fatigue while playing watch dogs 1 but the reality was that I just couldnt give a fuck about the story

I didn't realize I was in a thread about Skyward Sword. I'm sure one of you could create a thread specifically to address your greviences with the game and not shit up this thread.

I have Skyward Sword since the day it came out back in 2011 and I have only played the first 2 hours of it because I couldn't stand the intense handholding and how boring and tedious the quests were getting. I would like to finally finish the game once and for all before BotW but it's too late now. If I didn't finish it in more than 6 years how in the world I'm gonna finish it in less than a week now?

People are well within their right to discuss another game in the series.

Ever since they said there were over 100 shrines, I knew dungeons will likely to be the disappointing part of the game.

99% of the time it wasn't and SS was certainly not in that 1%

People went into SS with a grudge and didn't put in the minimal effort it took to play the game.

The Zelda cycle begins anew

The real Zelda cycle is, just before a new Zelda launches, everyone claims "This is the best game since Ocarina! Maybe even better than Ocarina!"

Some agree, some don't.

Then a new Zelda is about to launch. Everyone claims "This is the best game since Ocarina..."

yeah hopefully but if the dungeon part really is as unsubstantial as it seems I wouldnt be surprised if the game has a significant backlash from the people expecting the usual ~7 hour long dungeons

Great dungeons

Fun combat (when it works)
Great art style

- Story is alright, but it doesn't even begin to scratch the emotional depth of other games like Majora's Mask or Wind Waker. I thought it lacked an actual theme.

- OST is pretty good, but I don't know if second best.

- Mining Facility, Ancient Cistern, Sandship, and Sky Keep were very good. Earth Temple and Skyview are ok. Fire Sanctuary felt lazy and rushed. This applies to the areas as well, with all three areas being pretty good the first time you visit, but Faron and Eldin falling flat on their second visit, and need I remind anyone of the awful flooded forest part?

- I couldn't care less for the archetypal generic characters, but Groose had a bit of charm near the end.

- Combat didn't feel so much like combat as it felt like more puzzle solving. There were some exciting moments though.

- The art style is good, but the Wii doesn't do it justice. The game looks great on Dolphin and would probably look very good in a Switch remake.

I think folks need to go back and play the old Zelda games, especially LTTP and OoT. I'm playing through the series before launch and I'm getting bored while playing the temples, simply because they all follow the same logic of find key, find object, find boss key, get to boss room. After playing through LTTP, OoT is kind of a drag to play through, it only for the very similar structure the games enjoy. About to drop it and start WW, to see if it feels any better. Would play through Mm, but wouldn't finish in time with all the side stuff.
