Microsoft announced Xbox Game Pass subscription service

It's not streaming.

You download the titles to your Xbox. I like this, because if I decide to buy a title it simply unlocks kind of like the old XBLA trials after downloading. I bet this ends up covering 'Play Anywhere' titles as well on Windows10.
Why would it be streaming?

Why did anybody think it would be streaming?

PS Now is streaming because they can't emulate the PS3.

No it's not the same. The game is available to you until it cycles out of the service. So if you are halfway through playing it and it cycles out you are going to have to purchase it to finish the game or wait for it to cycle back in.

Nope if you kept what you downloaded there would be no reason to give people a discount to purchase permanently. If the game cycles out access is turned off.

They are not going to do that. If you download it, it will be yours until you cancel your subscription. Then you will be given a discount if you want to keep it. Wait and see.

This will replace Xbox Live subscription (pay to play online) service I suspect. Expecting E3 announcement.

Should emulate Netflix very 1:1.
Not sure how it will affect AAA production in the long run, I suspect many will wait and never buy games.

Lol. Those people weren't going to buy in the first place. These wouldn't be new games and you can't control the library, so if you're willing to wait that long you're probably someone who gets their games strictly from the 2 for $30 pile.

$9.99 a month, launching in the spring. You download the games to your system, and can purchase them outright for a discounted price to use even after your subscription lapses.

Now this is something I can get behind! Good job, Phil.

There's a reason they mention a 20% discount on buying the games. You only can play them while they are part of the library, downloaded or not.

This is definitely the future of the gaming 'Netflix' model.
Too many downsides with streaming ala PS Now.

Expecting Sony to announce something similar before end of year.

Fantastic idea, but it's sadly not for me. I came to a realisation that I will never get out from my backlog hole having finished just 4 games since the beginning of the year. Also I have tons of games on my Xbox thanks to GwG, sales and EA Access and all I play is FIFA 16 with my bruhs.

It's really ridiculous how cheap it is to play games these days. With so many great games coming out it's really the best time to be a gamer. That said,Game Pass seems great for people that might actualy get a value out of that. I'll pass. Sadly.

What happens to the games that cycle out? Do I still get to play them if I downloaded them already, or am I locked out?

More from the FAQ: 20% rebate on games when you have the Game Pass Membership.
Edit - Might be misunderstanding. Thought the 20% rebate was flatly applied to all game purchases, not just purchases of current Game Pass titles. Don't just me, it's early.

Wait, WHAT? So XBox ONE digital are effectively available at Amazon Prime/GCU prices?

Okay, this is officially massive. Microsoft is going to make a fucking killing on this service.

For you.
The Spanish FAQ says that this is available for Xbox One and Windows 10... it's probably wrong, but maybe true?

The English FAQ also mentions it

Xbox Game Pass is an Xbox One, Xbox Play Anywhere, and Xbox 360 backward compatibility game subscription for Xbox One; an active subscription is required to play games. The titles and number of games included in the subscription may vary over time, may vary by country, and may not be available in all countries. Subscription continues to be charged monthly at the then-current price (subject to change; plus applicable taxes) unless cancelled. Cancel anytime. For cancellation info see www.xbox.com/accounts. DLC sold separately. Notice before purchase of DLC: If you purchase DLC for a game that is later removed from Xbox Game Pass, or you terminate your Xbox Game Pass subscription, you will need to purchase the game separately to continue using the DLC. Xbox Live Gold membership (sold separately) required for online multiplayer on Xbox One. Download charges may apply as set by your ISP. Some titles may only be available for download by adult account holders 18 years and older. Xbox Game Pass discounts are not combinable with other offers and are not redeemable for cash. Requirements, features, and online services subject to change and/or retirement. Subject to the Microsoft Services Agreement (microsoft.com/msa).

We will see will be an easy thing to know as soon as the selection cycles.

That's one hell of a deal Depending on how good the lineup is I may get an XBO.

Pretty much. I hate that they cycle games though. I hate that with Netflix and I hate it here too. But 10 bucks is definitely the right price for this.

this is huge.

If this ends up working/picked up by consumers, I wonder how it will impact on games sales overall...

It does seem to be deliberately ambiguous about that.

Once I download a game with Xbox Game Pass, do I own it?
No, the Xbox Game Pass catalogue will update with new games being added every month. You need an active Xbox Game Pass subscription to play games. If you love a game currently in the catalogue and want to own it, you can buy it and instantly save 20 per cent off the price of the base game with your Xbox Game Pass membership, plus get 10 per cent off any related game add-ons and consumables while the game is still in the Xbox Game Pass catalogue.

This is absolutely fantastic! An Xbox version of Playstation Now that addresses all of my major complaints about the latter? I will absolutely use this.

Way better than now if I understand it correctly. Mainly cause you don't stream it. No reliance on having a really good internet connection.

Holy shit. This has huge potential.
I'm glad it isn't a shitty streaming service. Full game downloads is a beautiful thing.

I like this idea. I'd imagine it will only be for games that are older, as not to potentially cut into profits of newer or top selling games. So you will probably never see a title like Grand Theft Auto 5 there.

My only concern would be the limited amount of games. I mean, for $120 a year (or less if they discount an annual sub) having access to 100+ games is pretty sweet, but the value will be in the actual games available.

Only just now realized it wasn't just XB1 games, but also backward compatible Xbox 360 titles.

That makes a lot more sense.

Seems like the only way Sony can counter this is to either roll it into PS+ for no extra charge (and mug off PS3/Vita games) or add PS Now to PS+ (again, without a price increase). Can't imagine they'll ever do a programme like it considering it's similarity to PS+.

Are you seriously comparing plus to this service Lmao what?

You can try and argue my point and tell me how I'm wrong if you like.

Well, PS+ suck ass and PS Now don't exist in Europe so Yes, Sony, your move.

In what way does Plus suck ass? It's just as good as this service for me giving me access to 100s of games, it's no one's move, both have excellent offering already there.
And where did I say anything about PS Now?

I agree that this is like a wider expansions of PS+/GWG games. Definitely an interesting move if anything. External HDDs bout to be super filled lol. Though I do think a streaming aspect does have its own merits for those that didn't want to download full titles.

That's not too bad actually. The biggest impediment I see are consumer data caps, but if that's not an issue, this could actually be preferable to buying games outright.

I wonder if this means we'll eventually see 360 and OG Xbox games on PC through the Windows Store. This would help push their services on that platform for better or worse.
