Microsoft announced Xbox Game Pass subscription service

This is a pretty big deal, especially since Sony just removed the unique selling point (and purpose) of PlayStation Now. Both services now have the exact same goal, but this is cheaper and runs the game locally. Better.

Did PS Now change to a flat fee? I thought it was something ridiculous for a 3 hour rental or 24 hour rental or am I miss remembering?

It started with different time periods and then moved to a flat fee.

I'd love to see PS Now offer this download type of option (no Xbox One since they started putting their exclusives on PC). I tried PS Now to check out RDR, but just wasn't happy with how it looked/ran even with decent internet.

Just realized that's 20% off a digital purchase. Man that's great, and there's no requirement for it to be a pre-order. Now I wonder:

1. Does this 20% stack on top of other discounts?
2. Does this work for Play Anywhere titles?
3. Will new-ish releases be a part of the sub? Like, 6 months after initial release?

If yes to all of the above, this would be GOAT.

Agreed, PS Now isn't a bad service tbh but the pricing is off. If this proves popular, maybe Sony will take note and bring PS Now more in line with this new Game Pass service.

Maybe even give people the option to integrate them into XBL / PS+ for £10 / $10 a month extra if they want too. Having everything together seems a much better / easier option.
I have to say, the one time I tried PSNow it was a terrible experience. The pricing was terrible for such old games but more importantly, it just didn't control well. I rented NG Sigma and I felt like my character was running through molasses. And I have a pretty great connection (70 down 40 up). Thought it was going to be the way I caught up on all the PS3 games I never played because I never owned the console.

Wait what? Where does it say that?

In the announcement link:

It’s important to us that Xbox Game Pass provides an enjoyable and seamless experience. Before the program rolls out to the broader community later this spring, we’ll be testing Xbox Game Pass with select members of the Xbox Insider Program in the Alpha Preview ring starting today with a very limited number of titles. The titles that are available in Preview are just a small glimpse at the expansive catalog of games that will be available when Xbox Game Pass launches this spring. Xbox Live Gold members will also be receiving exclusive access to Xbox Game Pass prior to the program launching to the broader community. We’ll have more details on timing closer to launch.

Well the obvious way to counter this would be to add a premium option to PS+ that gives a larger Instant Game Collection. That wouldn't exactly be earth-shatteringly difficult to do if there was demand for it. That's basically what this is, a tweak on GwG/PS+ - an extra sub but a bigger starter game collection.

yep.

Xbox Gold is $60 per year.
Xbox Game Pass is 9.99 per month, so that's ~ 120USD per year.

Microsoft has clearly done an excellent job hiding the fact that these games are only playable while they are part of the play pass service, subscribed or not, downloaded or not, judging by the reactions assuming otherwise.

It really is like netflix- when something is removed from the service it's gone. You would have to purchase it to play that game.

So this is like PS Now, but

- Include current gen games.
- Is exclusive to XB1.

Not bad. It would be better if Win10 PC gets this service too.

Very neat announcement. That's one heck of a deal/price too!

I probably own all the games though, so I doubt I'll subscribe X-D. I have some young cousins/nephews/family that will love this.

I think Sony may be thinking of reacting to this. I got asked to complete a customer satisfaction survey this week and the main focus was around how they could improve PSNow and PS Plus.

I think it mentioned bringing PS1 and PS2 classics to PS Now.

I hope so. I really just want to be able to play the PS1 and PS2 games I have already purchased on PS4 :/

Great concept, Sony really needs to step up their game.

The only issue would be certain publishers not being on board with this, withholding their game from the Game Pass catalog.
These kinds of subscriptions do add up, though. I'd love for Sony to react to this by adding something, that is maybe not quite as extensive, but part of their base PS+ subscription.

PS Plus when it first came out offered something very similar, you couldn't buy the titles but some similar. They moved away to the two titles per month thing later.

Quick and dirty list from the alpha test:

- A Kingdom for Keflings
- Banjo 1
- Comic Jumper
- Defense Grid 2
- Gears Judgement
- Gears Ultimate
- Halo: Spartan Assault
- Hexic 2
- Jetpac Refuelled
- Kameo
- Max: The Curse Of Brotherhood
- Monday Night Combat
- Ms. Splosion Man
- OF: Dragon Rising
- Perfect Dark Zero
- Sacred 3
- Sam & Max
- Sunset Overdrive
- The Maw
- Viva Pinata

It's 2017. We don't own anything. It's all a service.

Yep, same.
And agreed, service like that could be good for youth audience, who don't have enough disposable income.
Bingo. The youth audience and the casual audience are going to eat this up. I'm not sure how relevant it will end up being for the hardcore audience, as we tend to buy the games we want to play by the time they would be on a service like this. It all just depends on their catalog. Either way, this thing has amazing potential. I'd be more interested if they allowed publishers to offer early trials like EA Access does.

Interesting idea, the idea of subbing for one month one my Xbox One for a few games and then dropping it is interesting. Can't imagine staying subbed over time though

It's interesting but it'll depend on the games. Think about how much garbage there is on Netflix vs how much actually good stuff there is. I don't doubt this will be the same

Good move but they have to get some games people want. They can beat Sony at this Netflix for games type service because Sony is trying to stream shit when we're not technologically ready for that yet.

Something like this could take off if they'd get new releases and such on it. I'm guessing that wont happen for awhile but it's nice to dream.

You are trying really hard... Pages now actually.

It was stated very clear actually. People dont always tend to read things.

They need to use this in new consoles.. so pay $250 for a new Xbox One and throw in a month of this service. What an amazing value to a new console owner and most likely they gain a sub out of it.

How many of them are XB1 titles? Three?
Could be worse.

Interesting idea; looking forward to seeing what titles are available. I'm guessing the 100 titles will mostly be 360 games with the XB1 titles being heavily indie/previous GWG titles since the price seems pretty low, but maybe Microsoft will surprise us.

Wow this is actually cool. I was hoping Sony was going to do this wth PS+ or Ps Now where you get to chose your rental and you can download it locally to play them but I can see how that wouldn't work if it's doing it over the cloud.

But I mean, wouldn't MS be able to do this since they have BC integrated into the system which is a bigger difference as to why this isn't a PS Now clone?

Damn. Just like that, they made PS Now look terrible by comparison. I wonder if you'll be able to use DLC & online multiplayer though.

Bold prediction:

They will be sunseting Xbox Live gold in favor of this sub.

I've saying for a while now, they would change towards a sub that makes sense for Pc users to subscribe too, and they would never sub for playing online.

This makes total sense in their universal platform push.

My guess is that if it catches on, that it will replace xbox live gold.

Whatever they do with PSNow, it's worse.

It's not a complaint, it would actually be outrageous if they let people keep them.

But so many are assuming they do keep them. And the same for the 20% discount. That's for game pass titles only.
