What is a possible Microsoft answer to Horizon Zero Dawn and Breath of the Wild?

How much Sony first party titles sold compared to PS4's 65 mil install base?

Bloodborne, one of the best games of the generation, sold just 2.7 mil, which is 4-5% of the PS4 hardware install base

Last Guardian, almost 1 mil, Horizon Zero Dawn, lets say 3 mil in its launch month.

Uncharted 4 I think is currently the most successful first party, at 8-9 mil (12% of the install base) but did these numbers after many sales/heavy discounts/bundles, and all other Sony first party titles sold under 2 mil each.

The average person that has a PS4 is using it as a console mainly to play third party games at higher specs compared with how the same games run on Xbox One, and this will dramatically change with Scorpio.

"How much Sony first party titles sold compared to PS4's 65 mil install base?" you know this is the exact idiotic argument that Xbox diehards like Crapgamer use to downplay PS4 exclusives?

Besides, having a wide catalogue of varied high-quality exclusives is undeniably good for the console, and this benefits hardware sales too. You might be trying to downplay a mega-success like Uncharted 4 or Horizon ZD, but have a look and see if PS4 hardware sales spiked during their release months.

I just hope MS aren't twiddling thier thumbs thinking about it and have already kicked off Dev on Fable or something like it. They aren't new to action RPG, it's been part of thier DNA since OG Xbox, who cares if it's not ready until 2019/2020, just get the ball rolling.

I don't blame them for shutting down Lionhead, they were given alot of time and money and they were unable to hit the level of quality expected outside of perhaps Fable 2. Still shouldn't stop them from either passing the franchise on or creating a new team to take ownership. We'll see at E3.

The latest tomb raider was heading towards openworld. MS should just buy it as an exclusive and expand on the crafting, various locals and combat options.

What I would prefer would be the return of Fable. Reboot it and start it all fresh again.

If Square Enix wants the TR brand to recover, they will never make it exclusive again. RotTR was disastrous to the growth of the franchise and it's probably going to end up around half the sales of its predecessor TR2013.

Like to see Alan Wake go multiplat.. is it a MS ip or Remedy's?

It belongs to Remedy, but MS owns the publishing rights. No reason to think a sequel wouldn't be multiplat, although I doubt they'd get funding for it as their last couple of AAA releases have had lukewarm sales.

This is a horrible strategy. How many genres has Activision killed? Skating, music, toys to life... even couch shooters are on life support in favor of MOBAs.

Following the money rarely works out in this industry. Remember Kinect? Remember Wonderbook?

Kinect made a crap ton of money in the later 360 years roping in Wii casuals.

The issue with MS strategy I'll concede, (because no strategy is perfect) is I feel the market can only support so many service type games at once. Even if they are different genres, people get so invested in a few at once. Micros sucking your wallet is another form of investment.

So it follows, MS games in this realm have to standout, be highly polished and supported very well to be successful. Can be a tough nut to to crack correctly for any publisher.

Scorpio will run with higher specs/graphics/framerate all the third party games and that is all MS needs. And as a platform the Xbox has its share of quality AAA exclusive games and who can say that MS didn't try (and obviously failed) to bring new IP's in the console.

I don't think that first party titles have so much impact in the current generation and just by looking at console game sales of the last three years its easy to come to this conclusion.

This argument was bullshit when the 360 had a much larger install base than the ps4 has now amd is bullshit now.

1 - outside 2-3 outliers, there's a range that games seem to sell in that barely changes no matter what the install base is.

2 - It's stupid to use % of install base as a metric for importance of a titles sales when is not always going to be the same people buying the games. A diverse portfolio is a huge plus for a console and even if the game does only reach a single digit % , that's likely ( at least in the PS4's case with niche/Japanese titles) a demographic that's getting ignored otherwise and probably not buying your console.

Pisses me of seeing ridiculous arguments that only the big 3rd party games matter, sure they're important , but surely no one wants to see the hobby regress to the point where we just get sequels of a half dozen mega franchises every year ?

A proper singleplayer Fable would be fantastic but the question is, what developer? If you think about it MS has a good variety of genres, they have a FPS, a TPS, racing games, strategy, whatever genre State of Decay falls under, platformer/metroidvania and so on. But they don't have an RPG of their own. Fable Legends should have never been made and should have been singleplayer from the start.

That being said, I doubt we'll get a game like that anytime soon from MS. Let alone something like Horizon ZD.

The last thing Tomb Raider needs as a franchise is to be tied to one one system, and Square would have to be stupid to do it after Rise. Fable had its time, they should be letting their studios do something new instead of pigeonholing them. Not canceling games (Phantom Dust), not rushing games (Recore), and not ignoring offers on the table (Sunset) could help too.

I don't know what's going on with their third party relations either, Scalebound should not have fallen through like that.

Need ekim to scrounge up new/renewed trademarks. I really hope their big games at e3 aren't just Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves and Forza 7.

Off topic but Phil Spencer has just been retweeting marketing material since March 7 and hasn't been responding to fan tweets like he usually does. Vacation or, better yet, Scorpio reveal rehearsal!? ;)

Lionhead was horribly mismanaged though. After Fable 3 they should have been allowed to develop something new, but instead they had to make Fable Kinect (to appease MS's new business strategy) and then they had to make Fable Legends (to appease MS's new business strategy). A new Fable is not what MS needs right now; they need something totally original.

It's like asking Marvel whats their answer to La La Land and Moonlight.
Hyperbole example I know. Just like movie industry follow the money and make super hero franchise, build universe etc, gaming industry is going to make GAAS and MS is in the front line.

Would they make it exclusive?

Prolly make it a Windows 10 thing, exclusive from their store front. Not saying that would be wise, but that would be my best guess.

There's a lot of money to be made with Minecraft 2 on name alone, nevermind actual game quality.

What I'm taking away from this thread is that MS have taken a conscious decision to move away from single-player adventures to focus exclusively on multiplayer. As someone who doesn't really enjoy playing co-op, I'm glad this strategy is failing because I would hate for it to be adopted across the industry. Clearly, there is a big demand for co-op games but plenty of people want to play single-player too and probably most people want to choose from a library of games which offer all sorts of experiences. If MS can get their head around that in time for the Scorpio they can turn it around. They've been so pig-headed recently with their attempts to dictate to the market because it suits their business model instead of tailoring their model to the market. They had to climb down on DRM and on Kinnect. They need to climb down on this too and start making investments in a range of games to support their key franchises.

so how many 3rd party devs had MS pissed off so far...it looks like Platinum's really pissed at MS and will not work with them again...(unless dictated by a publisher to work on a port)..

Remedy and Insomniac's relationship with MS seems drastically thawed after the sales number of their exclusive games on Xbox.

Supergiant games, one of my fav indie devs..seems to be only PC & PS4 for now despite developing for Bastion on 360 first....(their latest reply: Not enough resource and manpower to develop for Xbox)..

Would they make it exclusive?

Nah; that'd be suicide. Minecraft would have never reached such massive sales numbers without mobile especially. Making it Windows Store/Xbone exclusive would probably see it come in at about a fifth the sales of its predecessor.

It's like asking Marvel whats their answer to La La Land and Moonlight.

Major AAA action-adventures are hardly the equivalent of La La Land and Moonlight. It's one of the biggest genres in the world right now, and has been for decades.

I don't know who could do it but a Fable with some BOTW influences might be something which could be cool.

I'm increasingly skeptical that Crackdown still exists (this game better be at E3) and Scalebound looked bad every time it was shown. I understand why people love Platinum but that game was never going to be anywhere near close to Zelda or Horizon. All of the posters saying Scalebound are dead wrong.

I haven't gone through this thread but did anyone mention that cancelled Obsidian ARPG? I would have liked to have seen that. It could have been shit but that game has always been a big "what if?" for me.

That's what I'm thinking though, if it went out on Switch & PS4 as well, would it be more profitable than making it XB/PC exclusive... It'd shift a lot of xboxes, but there's a lot of markets XB isnt successful in.

Where is Nintendo and Sony's answer to Forza Horizon? The, by a country mile, most fun I've had playing games since Ace Combat 6 was released.

Listen to what this guy says

The whole point of exclusives is they are different. People need to accept that if they want Zelda they need to buy a Nintendo, they also need to accept that many people couldn't give a shit about Zelda and that's why there is no Zelda equivalent on the xbox.

If people gave enough of a shit about exclusives then there is a really simple way to go play that exclusive missing from their system.

I was not trying to get into a list war of this exclusive on x plaform beats or kills this other one on the other. If you found Forza Horizon great, that's great.

My point was more broad as in I don't think Microsoft has a software answer to the quality and quantity of first party exclusives Sony and Nintendo have and will put out there. That is regardless of my (or your) personal taste, trying to look at it from an objective perspective, what impact this software will have sales wise and in terms of brand perception. And I think in these terms Microsoft has very very little.

I'd like to see a brand new Jade Empire series. A game like that could really be interesting with current console and PC power. RPG/adventure, decent combat, hell get the Sleeping Dogs devs on it as exclusive

For 2017 I would say the answer is crackdown 3 but in the end of the day it may be nothing from MS themselves. They seem to be fine riding the 3rd party multiplatform wave and not really taking risks. At this point nothing is really wrong with that it's just is what it is

This e3 will be very interesting. I need to see a solid commitment for upcoming titles , new ips etc . I am really hoping they are secretly making another fable game , it's one of the tent pole franchises , along with forza , halo and gears .

Problem is I don't think hey have any teams todo it , maybe playground games (they split into 2 teams right ?)

The problem is any new announcements will most likely still be years away , so there is no short term fix.

They do have exclusives: sea of thieves , Crackdown, obviously more Forza, Gears and Halo, etc

Anyway, IMO what they should be doing now is focusing on Scorpio and third parties. This big wave of exclusives and third parties that aren't on Xbox is starting to come to an end and a lot of the rest of the year will be more third party centric.

They should be hard at work getting all the marketing deals they can or at very least permission to show the Scorpio advantages of big new releases. So that their next conference is like "RDR2? Better on Scorpio, "New COD? Better on Scorpio, Battlefront 2 (or whatever the battlefield team is doing)? Better on Scorpio.

Well it depends if you're a hardcore gamer that love games like:Dota 2

Dota_2_Gameplay_Sep_2013.jpg

We need something like that, that we also can play on TV.

Every game is better on pc compared to the console version(or should be):
- gfx and frames are much better
- Keyboard an mouse are mostly way better for rts/mmo/fps games.

I like to see a console that can give me the same experience for core gamers and can be connected like a console on my TV.

Socrpio isn't the answer.

As long as they don't make a boring open world games and why do they need to counter horizon?

Did some need to counter halo or gears? I guess they sort of tried but instead of just trying to counter other games like many studios did with call of duty developers should ignore those games and make more games with original designs and gameplay structures.

Seems like most shooters are click or push button to sprint your ass to Mars.

Killzone Shadow Fall sold over 2 million. InFAMOUS Second Son likely has as well. Also attach rate is a garbage argument.

That's the thing; a lot of people think Phil Spencer is this Saviour of Xbox™, and if that's the case then when he took the reigns three years ago he should have commissioned a bunch of new IPs which would be coming to fruition and probably ready to reveal this year. If that's the case then they could have a killer E3 where they echo Sony's recent successes by outlining their key releases over the next couple of years, but if it's just going to be a retread of games we already know about and third party exclusives on Scorpio then I think that'll be pretty fucking disappointing.

I agree with the bolded and showing off hardware advantages but the funny thing is all those games are going to be marketed by the publisher along with Sony.

Anyway, again as others have said in here, power will deffo help shift a fair number of Scorpio units, but it needs more software if it's to do beyond ok numbers.

More so if the difference between Scorpio and PS4 pro are not as drastic as folks imagine it will be.
Then again, maybe MS are perfectly happy to shout "most powerful console" from the rooftops and be done with it.

if this is MS's strategy in trying to grab marketshare from sony in Europe and Asia (more power), then good luck to them.

Think it as Windows 10 platform and not only just the Xbox consile platform vs what the other consoles currently have.

Compare the platform active users currently (billion Win10 vs under 100 mil) and then tell me where is probably more profits in the future from the perspective of developers.

And why do you think that MS will not bring new games to Windows 10 (as a platform) in the future?

The PS4 will offer inferior gameplay experience in all third party games, games which will sell at the same price in both platforms. Just imagine the digital foundry comparisons.

The power difference is a major differentiating factor in which Sony would not have an hardware answer for the next (at least) two years.

Unless something changes Sony has marketing rights to Red Dead Redemption 2, Call Of Duty, Destiny 2 and likely Battlefront 2. So almost every big hitter for Fall 2017 except for maybe the new Assassin's Creed.

The PS4 Slim and Xbox One S will be the main sellers going forward so for most consumers Xbox will still provide the "inferior" experience as you describe it. Scorpio is no savior for Xbox, but clearly you have bought in.

Is that the point of having first party in MS point of view tho?
They make MS Office available on every platform, same goes to Minecraft. Microsoft think hardware feature, OS feature are what make your console more attractive not exclusive games and they are more willing to invest on those IMO.
MS publishing care more about profitability just like every third party publisher, the money is in GAAS, nothing wrong to follow the money.

Well if they are happy with current profits from Xbox division then obviously they don't have to change anything in their perfect strategy

Fable is the only exclusive rpg ip MS has to answer those 2 games. And that is probably never gonna happen.

At this point MS just needs to cough a lot of $ and moneyhat a big open world rpg for exclusivity. Like a KOTOR III or something. There is nothing else they can do.

Simple answer is they haven't got an answer for Horizon or Breath of the Wild, at least not that we know of anyway, unless they have some amazing new IP they haven't announced yet.

Killzone Shadow Fall sold over 2 million. InFAMOUS Second Son likely has as well. Also attach rate is a garbage argument.

Attach rate is an important metric that shows the significance of the exclusive games for someone making a buying decision on the platform. With Sony exclusives not having a large attach rate and looking at the third party sales on the platform you can come to the conclusion that people prefer to play third party games more than first party games.

Killzone sold 2.1 and Infamous 2.8, compared with the install base its less than 5% of PS4 owners that played these games, even today in their heavily discounted prices people don't choose to play them (pity because both are great games).

Because Xbox One has the same third party games also available, the differentiating factor between platforms is the power of the PS4 which makes third party games to run better on the system.

Personaly I have a PS4 mainly because I want to play the Sony exclusive games, but all the third party games that I play I buy them for my high end pc, because I find them cheaper and because I can enjoy them with better graphics/framerates/effects etc.

The same will happen with Scorpio, the differentiating factor will be the power difference and how third (and first obviously) party games will look and play.

Someone mentioned Jade Empire previously. You've mentioned KotOR. There's even been suggestions of Alan Wake or Sunset Overdrive. But I really don't think paying for an external IP is the solution. MS needs to create a new big-budget IP with either an in-house team or reputable RPG developer (like Obsidian - and I realise the irony of this suggestion) and push it as one of their new tentpole releases. Don't squeeze in any bullshit like co-op or multiplayer, and let the developer be creative and do what they do best. The genre is a definite gap in their catalogue, and one which they did a much better job at representing in the previous couple of generations.

It's not about list wars, it's about personal taste and I was making a point. Yes I enjoyed the FH games, and as a platform, Sony is lacking in racing games. That's a huge black hole as far as I am concerned. A much bigger hole than missing and open world adventure, (there's plenty of those), it's a whole genre.

You have enjoyed your Sony exclusives, personally there are only two games that I want that are PS exclusive. One of them was Ace Combat 7, that exclusivity lasted about 3 days, so that leaves one game. And I don't buy consoles for one game (never again, Atari Jaguar). MS has very little to offer you, but Sony has very little to offer me.

I accept that the MS exclusives are rather thin, but personally I think a lot of the recent PS exclusives are rather vacuous, with the exception of Horizon, which does look very good, though not my cup of tea. At the end of the day it's all about what you want out of a console. MS has the racing games, the better controller, the backwards compatibility, the better infrastructure, the four free games a month ( i have no idea what PS offers there) and the soon to be best versions of multiplats, so that's the better package in my opinion.

When PS offers something that I can't live without then I will buy one of those too, like I said it was AC7, but now we are back to the drawing board.
(though I might get one, just for the fuck of it, when my den is completed)

Scorpio is getting mouse and kb support, I believe it was already discussed? ( or did i dream that?) What wouldn't that answer?

This trailer ruined the game for me.

Whenever I try to play it I'm dying at how repetitive and brain dead it is :/ ...

Deadly Premonition kind of filled that void even though it wasn't quite that either.

I bought a 360 for that game and it turned out to be a bastard child from a fantastic idea of a parent. A bigger disappointment than Star Wars Battefront, that was.

Make Ori a full blown AAA Zelda / Metriod 3D game.

Other than that I'm not sure MS need to find 'answers' on the odd occasions where the competition get a standout game.
