Zelda BOTW Patch 1.11 released

The guy tells you "The Forest North of Here", and that it as the end of a named river, and there's a giant forest North of there. How ambiguous is it?

If you havent explored the whole map I get why you wouldnt know necessarily. But if you have the whole map explored there are only 2 heavuly wooded areas in the game.

I believe
Hetsu
tells you that he's going to see "grandpa" and tells you to follow
Hylia River
north to get there. It's not hard to figure out from there, though if you haven't met
Hetsu
then I can understand the issue.

All I remember from my last encounter with him (like 30 hours ago) is that he said he remembered where his forest is. No actual directions on how to get there.

LOL I don't even know who Hetsu is, and I have been playing for 70 hours, yet it seems he is common knowledge around the Zelda threads! Pretty awesome that I can miss such apparently obvious things and still enjoy the hell out of the game.

70 hours and you haven't met Hetsu? Jeezzzz.

Err... you really haven't met him yet? You may wanna get on that, it helps immensely.

Maybe you had to talk to him once more to get the info? I remember vividly him saying to follow Hylia River north because that's what I did right after talking to him.

Even Hetsu has to be put in spoilers now lol?

He's on the road right before
Kakariko Village
's southern entrance. I recommend you seek him asap because he provides a very useful service.

Took me 50 hours to eventually stumble upon him. Super easy to miss if you didn't start out following the roads everywhere.

Also took me ages to finally get to THE forest. Originally entered from a different spot and ended up in some pitch black forest with a shrine and figured that was the extent of it.

I'm still fairly early in the game and all of these "100 hours and you never met so and so?" type posts makes me anxious while playing the game haha

How long until we as a community can post "spoilers" for BoTW without people freaking the fuck out? Like, non-story spoilers. Just characters and locations and the like, not how
Ganon doesn't utter a single fucking line and is a goddamn resident evil boss WTF

You mean T
hyphlo
R
uins
? That is a pretty cool little spot if you didn't complete it (on re-reading it sounds like you did - I liked that bit of the game, pretty different skillet required to beat it).

I'm pretty sure there's a spoiler thread where you can discuss whatever you want. The game isn't even a month old and not everyone who wanted a switch has been able to get one yet.

No need to feel anxious! :) If you absolutely need to encounter someone, you will find them by following recommended paths in the game. Even still, you will find you discover plenty of useful people, places and things just naturally.

I didn't meet Hetsu until like 40 hours into the game. Did Gerudo Desert and Zora's Domain first, the only reason I even made my way towards Kakariko is that I found Hateno and its
Sheikah Research Institute
.

I think his name is actually
Hestu
, though I'm now confused because everyone on this thread is calling him
Hetsu
.

I was confused also so I typed the way everyone was spelling it into Google and it brought up BOTW so I thought I was wrong, so I'm glad you said something because I was thinking "oh that sound makes more sense in Japanese, I guess I really did have it wrong." So, thank you for pointing this out!

So this is pretty new information for me 80+ hours in and now I need to find this

It's not real, sorry.

Eh better safe than sorry right? It's not like it's hard to tag or click to see it.

I mean... What would that name even mean to someone who hasn't met him yet though?

Same thing for many of the locations, though at least that makes more sense regarding some of them, like a certain island for example.

Finding out that the character's name is Hestu and not Hetsu and that basically everything written about BotW on the internet is collectively wrong is crazy.

I kind of can't believe it.

Alright, found him! That's a pretty useful service indeed, and it hardly costs anything! I've been throwing away stuff like a madman, so this is a welcome change of pace.

Seriously. It's not like you spoiled how you meet Medli in the afterlife when Link gets killed by Vaati and the reincarnated version of Zant in the grand finale where you get to play as Ganondorf who turned out to be the true hero after all this time resulting in a 4th timeline where Link reveals that he was pro-Hydra all along! People need to reeeeeelax.

The internal res is always the same.
I missed opportunity, no? :|
Especially since every U comes with an SD screen.
You can do this on the wiiu, if you have homebrew i believe.
You can do it in the OG memory management as well, no? Aren't save states separate from add-on content?
You joke but I'd appreciate it if you guys cut it out with the fake-spoiler stuff for that very reason. It can take away some of the suspense.

Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess plot details:
Impa dies in SS and Zant has a true master (Ganondorf) in TP.
My sorry ass glanced over the fact that I've yet to play SS. Damn.

Just played this on switch and yeah, it's a big improvement I'd say although it is true draw distance might have been reduced even further. Still, happy they patched it.

You'd be surprised how many people head straight for the yellow marker and parlour it over the mountains instead of doing what the Old Man says.

Well, I completed the game without encountering
Hestu, the Lost Woods or any of the dragons beyond seeing them from a distance
. Just discovering all of that on my second playthough and I'm slack-jawed in amazement. It cannot be overstated how brave Nintendo were to release this game with so many hidden jewels left tucked away for so many (not so intrepid) explorers like myself to miss. This game is very, very special indeed.

Honestly, with this particular game, discovery is like half the appeal to me. For instance, I was massively blown away when I first found a
great flameblade
because not only did it look badass as hell, it was something I had no idea existed in this game and it's not something from other Zelda games. Same as with the
Stalnox
. I actually envy people who managed to steer clear of all of the trailers and E3 footage, because I would've loved to be blown away by things like chopping trees, using stasis, even finding a
Stone Talus
.

So I'd say give it ~6 months until we can assume everyone who wanted to stay away from any details in this game has played it.

Wait holy crap really?
Hetsu
just sounds better than
Hestu
though, I guess my brain is tricking me (and many others).

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own

That sounds pretty fair. It's just so interesting to see a game where literally EVERYTHING seems to be a spoiler. It's like Undertale all over again but x1000000.

Kotaku's "tips for playing BotW" article actually mentions to go see Hestu as one of the tips, since many people end up missing him due to not following the normal path to reach the village.

Ah, that sucks. I don't think the frame rate is that bad in the game. I don't want more pop-in...

Awful that people are missing him. They get a worse gameplay experience due to
severely restricted inventory space
and they miss out on the
maracas fun
as well. You people have been cheated out of the optimal BOTW experience!

Glad to hear it. You will be very pleased with his service as the game goes on, though FWIW the cost does increase over time.

My sorry ass glanced over the fact that I've yet to play SS. Damn.

FWIW, there is more to that Skyward Sword spoiler than it sounds at face value if you haven't played the game, kinda. So, just try not to read any more and some surprises will surely still await you.

'Hetsu' is upsetting but I can't fault people for getting Kakariko wrong when it's spelled differently in like every game

Death Mountain
Kakariko Village
Hyrule Castle
The Lost Woods

Oops...did I just spoil nearly every Zelda ever?

it's totally possible to use the other entrance to the village and miss the character. I remember that I had a tough time finding him the second time because I used the wrong entrance to the village

I've noticed now that on occasion when I ride my horse the
hyrule theme
starts to play. I didn't notice this pre-patch, but it could be because I beat the game and now have a
star by my save file.
