Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

How in the hell are people expecting this to retail at 499? It's pretty much exactly aligning with the predictions made beforehand.

They are hitting 399, don't be silly. There's a reason Jaguar/Polaris is in there.

DF video sounds like alot of customization to the chips, which normally means more expensive to make. $399 would be smart but something tells me its going to be $449-$499, we did end up with $299 switch after all and everyone thought it was going to be $250 or less.

Scorpio can implement different rendering techniques.

Look. It is really simple. Just like how PS4 games look better than X1 games, Scorpio games will look better than Pro games.

Don't know if its that simple. The difference between rendering nativ or cb 4K is massive. The pro only has to render half the pixels, while the Scorpio is 50% more powerful.

Games made with the Scorpio in mind are going to blow the pro away (at 1080p, no question).

I'm surprised that there is good amount of "meh" in this thread. This console has the best spec to date and very impressive, and as gamers, this should be exciting news.

GAF is decidedly Sonyland.

With everything accounted for, it's a 50% increase over the PS4 Pro.

For some the Scorpio is too little and too early. It will be an after thought when PS5 arrives about right on time with the right specs.

Pulling out of a 1:1 cycle with PS could either be a masterstroke or a disaster for Xbox.

I'll be fine either way. I am riding out my PS4 until PS5 and will definitely be moving up to Scorpio from Xbox One. Regardless of when PS5 releases, Scorpio is easily powerful enough to last me a good 5 years or so.

I wonder of FH3 will be updated for Scorpio. Maxed out 4k60fps looks incredible on PC.

I think the studio head at Playground has teased as much already. Basically saying that the game already supports improvements like that so moving it to Scorpio would require minimal effort.

I wasn't expecting a massive surprise. But the hype in this thread has me a little confused is all. And any honest reactions are being labeled as "downplaying" or "salt." I don't get it.

Seems like a reasonable set of features for something that's releasing 13 months after the PS4 Pro.

New console reveal, new hyperbole, reality check at launch. The cycle never ends.

In fact, the team can push ForzaTech to the equivalent of PC's ultra-level settings and we're still sitting at 88 per cent GPU utilisation

MY HEART

"On the CPU side of things, we could still meet our design goals with the custom changes we made," Kevin Gammill points out. At the end of the day we are still a consumer product. We want to hit the price-points where consumers want to purchase this. It's about balancing the two

Can I just send you guys my credit card?

If even Leadbetter is pushing the 499 narrative, don't expect the average gaffer to do better

There's a lot of "meh" for a few reasons:

- It doesn't solves Microsoft's major problem right now, which is content.

- There's no reason to believe that this will do anything to turn around their sales woes.

- They announced that it would be a 6TF machine almost a year ago. Confirming that with detailed specs today is cool, but ultimately unsurprising and unexciting.

It is simpler than that.

Despite MS informing us that today was a focus on tech and hardware, people either pretended not to understand, or simply did not get the memo.

I never had any problem with Forza after I used that CPU fix that made me disable the first processor.

They talked about it in the video. I am sure fh3 will look damn glorious and the Scorpio won't break a sweat.

Okay - noted. i was just curious since it seemed like a big thing in the article. heh

now your final thoughts on it, since the specs are out? What is impressing you the most and what is something you wish was pushed a bit more?
It is almost exactly what I expected it to be a year ago. Which is, a PS4 Pro + a year + $.

And that is exactly what everyone should have expected. No one should be disappointed here, MS has produced exactly the product they should and could have.

As expected the PS fans in here with XBOX has no games and PCGAF in here like locusts evangelizing their rigs.

Can't we have anything nice? LOL
Don't lump us Sony folks together. I haven't owned an MS product for gaming in years. If the games come out on Scorpio and are running substantially better than their Pro counterparts, I will be picking up this bad boy this holiday. It's really in the devs hands at this point to see what use they make of the horsepower.

What that actually means in terms of dev support is somewhat unclear though, as I imagine a lot of companies just won't see the point of the effort.

This is more of a concern for me than price point, tbh.

I think it's the mid gen upgrade aspect. All off this sounds nice but will it truly look like a leap or will most games end up not looking much better than the Pro?

We need to see the games.

So every Xbox One game will run at 4K native ?

Is this a fact or rumor ?

Seems like Microsoft want it to be a thing, mostly 1080p titles and to push some 900p. Imagine it will be up to the publishers and devs though.

The premise is definitely cool, but the specs were already mostly known, a lot of people don't have 4k TVs, 3rd parties might not take advantage, there won't be exclusives, we don't know price, etc. Plus the Pro is already out so we have a good idea of how incremental console upgrades work in practice now.

Cool system Microsoft. Seems strong.

Now tell me the price and what new exclusives it has, if either one disappoints, no thanks. At all.

Still waiting on that MS console that actually makes me want it.

It comes down to, do you want to play Red Dead Redemption 2 in true Native 4K? You can't really say Xbox One is just for exclusives. They do get pretty good third-party support, and that will only get better with Scorpio (or at least they'll get the best version of them).

If RDR2 is anywhere near the environmental complexity of GTAV, there's no way that Scorpio will run it at native 4k without significant compromise in other areas of visual fidelity.

As far as third-party multiplat support goes, history has shown us that the best hardware does not always mean the best version of the game. Especially when you're talking about pushing 4k on hardware that is barely capable of achieving that with a consistent framerate. Not to mention the fact that platform specific optimization with third-party multiplats doesn't happen as well as it should anymore, meaning devs are wasting power just because it's there to waste in some cases.

Also, you're fooling yourself if you think games released 5 years from now will run at native 4k on this thing without having to turn other settings way down or running at sub 30 fps. The demand for high visual fidelity will continue to get higher and devs will continue to push the envelope.

I would say, as with all things technology, that you all should temper your expectations.

How accurate is it to say Scorpio > Pro is roughly equivalent to OG PS4 > OG XB1?

Specs wise? Not accurate. Scorpio is a big increases. In terms of user end difference, maybe?

For 1080p owners I think, the differences between Scorpio and Pro in similar games won't be all that apparent unless devs go all out with extra featuresets.

Should be 399 right guys?
Its not that more powerful then PRO and release a whole year later.
And PRO will probably be 350 when this comes out.

This is quite a bit more powerful than the PRO. I don't understand how people are even saying the PRO is slightly less powerful. Sounds like they don't understand how these things work at all, and are speculating off other people's comments.

Time to start saving up then. All that power in a console. Good God.

It is fucking amazing. Despite some people here downplaying

I mean Forza 6 hitting native 4k 60fps with only 66% GPU usage is fucking phenomenal. That leaves room to spare to improve graphics and still be native 4k 60fps for Forza 7.

How on Earth are people downplaying it? We are talking easily the strongest console ever made and an enormous step up compared to the original Xbox One.

Right now, I'm imagining what a new Fable would look like on this hardware...

Anyone downplaying the GPU difference between the Pro and the Scorpio needs to lay off the Kool-aid. That performance gap is a PS4's worth of processing power difference, it might be about the same percentage as the PS4 and XBO but it's also a gap that's over three times larger.

The issue though, is that even the PS4 Pro's GPU is held back by the CPU. Yes, the GPU power can offer some benefits like extra AF, Resolution bump, etc etc. But we'l still be effectively stuck at 30 fps for most games.

That being said, really excited by the potential of a next generation with actual Zen cores.

According to Richard, it's what the team at Microsoft are gonna be aiming for. What that actually means in terms of dev support is somewhat unclear though, as I imagine a lot of companies just won't see the point of the effort.

Yes. This has me really scratching my head too. Forza already looks great. I really do not see any non-xbox owners being on the fence over this. If Forza was what was going to sell them an xbox, they would have one already...

It will get existing xbox one owners who are Forza fans some incentive to upgrade. But this is not a strategy to get new consumers. A lot of this inital marketing seems to be to try to get existing xbox owners, already invested in thier ecosystem, to upgrade. It does very little toward attracting new users.

That was what I was leaning toward.. Most the people in my group all have switched to the PS4 (from the 360). I know 1 person who bought the xbox because they wanted to play Halo and in the end was upset that the game just wasnt the same.

The Scorpio is essentially MSFT making a box that can perform to the level of the PS4, because of the inability of the standard Xbox One (obviously the Scorpio will perform better as well not just at the same level).. I didnt see anything that is going to shift an existing ps4 users tied to the ecosystem to a Scorpio.. especially if people are invested with their friends on the online aspect of ps4 network.

Well the specs turned out to be what most people thought they would end up being given the information known (which are still pretty good) but what really surprises me is the length Microsoft is going to make sure the hardware is fully optimized to run all games the best it can. From system wide down sampling, 16 AF, v-sync, to having a "boost mode" on by default and doing the due diligence to make sure this doesn't end up harming games are all pleasant surprises. When Microsoft says they want to win back developers with Project Scorpio I fully believe it.

It will be interesting to see how multi platform games take advantage of the hardware. It's been seen with PS4 Pro that this can be a mixed bag with games like Titanfall 2 taking great advantage but others like Overwatch just doing the bare minimum when it comes to their patches but I suspect this has more to do with time of release than anything. Can't wait to see what first party games can do with this hardware.

But with $499 being the suggested price is too high for me (college student and all that). But this line from the Xbox team gives me a little hope for $399
"At the end of the day we are still a consumer product. We want to hit the price-points where consumers want to purchase this. It's about balancing the two."
So we'll see but I'm not hopeful. I'll probably end up waiting for 2018 and picking one up before Halo 6. Also might be a good graduation present to myself lol

Why not? Richard made it sound like it's a very impressive feature.

I think it basically means that regardless of having Jaguar in it, the CPU really won't have to be pushed to perform well. I think they want to take the perceived Jaguar bottleneck out of the equation.
