Microsoft FY2017 Q3 Earnings - Xbox Live MAU 52m (up 13%) Gaming revenue $1.928bn

I have the feeling that the Xbox One sales are really dead outside US.

From some reports indications it seems that both the UK and Australia are still solid markets for Xbox. Also Mexico.

But yeah mainland Europe and Asia are pretty much a total wasteland for Xbox One

This is a BIT misleading when it comes to Xbox Live monthly active users.

From a year ago, it's up 13%. Yes.

However, from just last quarter, it's actually down more than 5% to 52 million.

so when Sony will report 3 million PS4 sold tomorrow they are down over 60%?
you know the difference between YoY and sequential comparisons ;)

edit:
wow im sorry. i totally missed the YoY phrase in the topic titel
maybe a mod could change that

They are going to combine the Scorpio sales with the XBOX sales if the launch fails... So everybody is going to be clueless... And more MAU numbers.

Scorpio is going to be combined with Xbox One because its still an Xbox One. Sony does the exact same thing with Pro they don't break off Pro into its own reporting.

Yeah, thats not a fair criticism at all when they specifically are saying its not a new generation and it plays Xbox One games and wont take games away from Xbox One.

Sony isnt giving us Pro only numbers and Nintendo didnt give us New 3DS numbers. They combine all sku's together, which is fine.

Any idea at the estimate of total xbones sold thus far?
The range is too big for estimates but... let's try.

NPD LTD: ~16.5m

US is about 58-63% of MS market.

Estimated WW sales: 26.2m to 28.5m

Yeap... my range is really big.

Damn at the revenue for Xbox. Even when they're beaten in sales very badly they're still not that far from Sony.

Getting people spending money within their ecosystem pays dividends, which is why they've been on the assault as far as making their actual service really attractive for Xbox owners. Keep them locked in and spending billions yearly.

only at gaf could revenue be up YoY everywhere and people still act like microsoft is about to quit being a business

I've said it in the past but some people on GAF take the Ricky Bobby approach to their consoles, in that if it ain't first it's last when that's not how the business world works. If it were Pepsi would have been out of business decades ago.

I wonder how all the people who claimed things like "I bet Scorpio is Microsoft's last hurrah" are feeling right now.

Keep on wishin.

Not gonna lie, I'm spending more money on Microsoft than Sony almost entirely thanks to Backwards Compatibility. Microsoft just doesn't have the first-party lineup, as we all know, but they can coast on the 360 Gravy Train for a long time. I wonder how much Black Ops 2 is making for them.

Last year at the same quarter Sony gaming revenue was ~$2.800bn... about $1bn more than MS this year that I won't call "not that far from"... let't see how much did Sony this year.

To be fair, they open themselves up to that type of talk when they provide MAU numbers instead of profit numbers or at least hardware/software numbers.

But i agree its unlikely that they're going anywhere anytime soon.

Gaming is irrelevant next to their other departments, those net revenue numbers are insane.

expect them to grow further, with no loss making business anymore
more personal business OI is increasing every quarter thanks to no more phones being sold.

Surface, Bing and Gaming being more profitable (yes the unimportant Xbox Scorpio will even help here)
Azure margins are also getting better even with the huge money invested every quarter
LinkedIn will be included in the future
no more write downs in sight

hey Pepsi as a company is doing even better than Coca Cola :p
so maybe it's the perfect Sony and Microsoft analogy :D

I think 360 BC is marginal for revenue since you don't need to rebuy stuff. Most of the games of the 360 era don't have strong service hooks. Most of the new revenue comes from monetizing whales on lootboxes or long tail services like FH3.

LinkedIn was included this Q. 700ish million

LinkedIn was included this Q. 700ish million

yeah. i mean in the YoY growth for the next 3 quarter, as it was not included in the comparison quarter

700ish million now vs 0 last year quarter
900ish million now vs 0 last year quarter in the next quarter
etc...

Did they disclose how much Simplygon costs them?
nope

just this small press release back in january:

I am not saying is a bad thing... But every Microsoft system in the future is going to be counted as Xbox One then, because i dont think we are going to see a new Gen from Microsoft, only hardware upgrades like Scorpio.

It's a new gen when games no longer support the XB1, that won't last forever.

I mean I'd hope so! If not Sony would have major problems. Lol

Their gaming revenue is almost 2 billion? and people think they are just going to leave the market?

Yeah Xbox is still a very strong business even though they are being dominated by Sony in total volume and sales.

People sometimes forget that you don't have to have the first place console to still have a plenty healthy and thriving ecosystem

I believe the next console after Scorpio will be a new gen and it won't be called Xbox One... 2019/2020.

You'll notice Q1 drops every year vs. Q4, which is why YOY is important, and why YOUR comment is misleading.

and they forget, that even while the Ps4 is outselling XBox One 2:1 or even more,
Sonys gaming revenue is nowhere close to be 2 times as big as Microsofts

I think that Phil Spencer said something about this in the Project Scorpio event... They are going to follow the hardware upgrade route and maintain the ecosystem of the plafform. I think thats the future of the consoles and is a smart idea.

The profit margin in video games is notoriously low. It's unlikely for Xbox to get more than $1B in profit this year despite how high revenues are.
