Again I feel you. But all i'm doing is explaining how we got to this point.
Yes, creating a purely 3d sonic game along side mania with multiple playable dudes to show how far sonic has come as a franchise, celebrating its anniversary showing the two well done pillars of sonic and his friends in good games would have been a very strong statement to make.
However we exist in this timeline.
Where like ... to be honest a great deal of franchises in this day an age, saw disney and marvel and went, I want to expand like that. That after ,boom, the movie that supposed to come out next year we have heard nothing off. And the overly non serious sterile state of sonic nostalgia reliant aesthetic that we are at right now. That's how we got to this point. And it isn't just sonic, its quite a few things across multiple mediums.

This game seems like its trying to appeal to everyone at once.
Watch you play as OC to unlock them. And then your OC does shit for them, and they give you special character specific items
Gotta keep some stuff for DLC since we all know that character creator will be popular.

I like the idea of Steve the Hedgehog, a straight laced guy who has no time for this "weird cartoon bullshit", despite the fact he's a big headed cartoon hedgehog.

I'm going to make a character called Thunderflare, or actually a character called Dark Thunderflare. He can control the elements of water and ice. He is light, but also shadow. He also has the properties of metal, since he's half-robot, and the powers of every Sonic character, i.e. super-speed, flight, etc. Not sure what species he is yet, but probably a squirrel.
Anyways, Dark Thunderflare loves quoting Bible verses. He yells "Jesus saves" while shooting Robotnik in the face with a handgun. His handgun is also a grappling hook gun. He also skateboards, likes eating people and being pregnant. At night he strolls through cemeteries, lamenting his responsibilities as the Pumpkin King.

The "make your own character" thing sounds like it could be fun, Jokes aside. I think it is a genuinely good idea based on Sega's own character designs, and the popularity of fan characters. People like to make fun of Sonic recolours a lot, but most of them are made by kids and teenagers who want a creative outlet. I've never seen an issue with that.
As for the game itself, I'm not sure how excited I am for it. The level design doesn't look that exciting. Generations had great 2D level design for Classic Sonic at least, but this game looks closer to Colours and Lost World which had pretty shitty 2D level design.

I just wish they would stop trying to force characters down our throats. I've never seen anyone say the problem with a good platformer series is the lack of characters.
The last platformer to have mandatory characters that aren't Sonic was ten years ago. Unless you could Sonic Rivals 2, but I wouldn't.
