I think the custom character idea is good, for kids. The only downside I can see is that it probably controls like ass, which may prove frustrating for younger players.

Colours was definitely better dialogue-wise than what followed, though as a person not involved with Sonic games' development I can't exactly pinpoint how much the blame was on the nominal writers and how much on whatever they were given as constants in case of Lost World. Generations definitely didn't give them much field to shine, but Lost World was way, way worse while not being constrained by story taking place mostly in the hub. Chip in Unleashed may have been a cliche nuisance, but Deadly Six felt so much more offensively bad to me, bunch of stereotype incarnations that kept acting generically while being the primary focus of the storyline basically up until late into game, and that's hardly all with Sonic and Tails somehow getting more flattened and teasers for more interesting things being denied such as Tails fight and an interesting level setting - granted, Colours and Unleashed both did a little of that, but Lost World did almost nothing else.
Jokes, but there are world stuff in sonic boom land that I genuinely like. Like no chaos emeralds, and mostly no humans.

I mean, true. Sonic Boom had interesting ideas. Grappling mechanic could've been cool, or at least as cool as it is here.
It's just that Sonic discussion here and abroad is so intellectually disingenuous at this point that I literally can't tell anymore if people are serious when they make arguments saying "x feature is bad in all circumstances."

Watching the Gamexplain discussion, I agree with them that this is probably the best way they could have revealed it. I imagine this will be a popular feature among younger players.
And homestly, if the style is just a riff on Classic/Modern, they could be doing a lot worse.

on the plus side, there's hella material to rip for Sonic Dreams Collection 2
Sins are transferable in the Sonic franchise, I guess.
However, I'm writing it off because I feel like it's yet another excuse for Sonic Team to just stop making the extended cast playable because they potentially perceive them as anathema to critical reception and sales, even though Tails and Knuckles are in goddamn fucking Mania and no one cares.
Like, I can't be the only one who thinks Tails being relegated to nothing but the gadget man in the story is a solution to the invented problem of having him still be around in the games without his Sonic 2 functionality (they went so far as to not even make him playable in Colors' arcade mode, which would've been the perfect time to do it). If it's not that shit, it's a mediocre Classic Sonic ironically dividing up the gameplay in the same way the Adventure games were maligned for, while the present characters who are probably far more equipped for modern butt-kicking than Classic is were relegated to rescue fodder and a cheerleading squad. Now it's the character creator.
It's maddening. You have an extended cast. Just fucking put them back in already.
I think people exaggerate that stuff anyway. Most Sonic fan characters are made by kids and teenagers. If we want to write off franchises based on how much creepy fan art there is on Deviantart, we'd have nothing left.

This franchise was always in need of good character design and this might actually be it! Just kidding, don't take it personell. 😘
There is nothing particularly Adventure-y about the OC's gameplay. It looks based upon modern Sonic's gameplay first and foremost with a few extra abilities and automated segments tacked on, like an HD Colors or something.

I think that reaction was due to how awful/lazy Sonic fan characters tend to be. Take Sonic, make him red, add some clothes, original character. And the avatars this thing makes look that bad. They could have at least made a more powerful customizer, or if it CAN make better-looking characters, shown those.
Of course, they gameplay looks pretty meh, too. It would have been better to focus on Sonic and Sonic. They're having enough trouble pulling those two off and they want to split their resources even further for a 3rd character.

But someone has to be on the front lines to dismantle the shitposting.
It's kind of baffling how those two are the only ones with abilities that stand out on their own, while the rest all has some variation of ring gathering or conservation ability, which is pretty lame since we probably didn't need four variations on the same theme when they could've come up with other abilities instead.
I don't think I really am in the mood for more Sonic anymore and I'd say Sonic having way too many friends is one of the series' downsides, but diehard fans are probably really happy with this and that's fine by me.
