Survival games are not graphical stunners and the performance on every single one of them is sketchy at best.
MMORPG's operate pretty differently, needing individual permanent server clusters that the game runs on. Destiny needs to be client based and allow players from all over to group up.

Honestly, what they're doing is about what I expected, and sort of what I wanted. The game is a lot of fun, but having to go back to the tower and go to orbit and whatnot really makes the game way too slow. I want to be able to go from mission to mission to mission when I play so it isn't broken up so badly. If they can make it so there's less busywork and less time-wasting, I'll be happy.
Although, saying it has a lot of cinematics isn't a good thing unless the story is actually worthwhile (and even then, there are usually better ways to tell a story). I've played Destiny for a couple hundred hours, and I couldn't tell you what the story is. Basically "there are bad guys - go kill them." It was quite possibly the most poorly-told story in a game I've played, so I don't have a lot of faith in this game being better in that regard.

It really doesn't.
It's kinda easy making these statements. Let's wait for proper comparisons. Animation- and effects-wise, I certainly don't see huge changes.

MMORPG level of gameplay and interaction isn't the same thing.
The closest thing you have to compare it to is Planetside 2 which is actually a massive fps. Game runs like total ass on current consoles.

Only thing I don't like so far is the difference between 4 players in PvP and 3 player fireteams. It sucks when have to deal when kicking/adding friends when you want to play different modes.

Not really. TTK expansion had a decent amount of story, but I think you'll be fine with starting here.
