Nintendo Switch paid online coming 2018 ($19.99 a year, Dr Mario w/ online play)

I don't know, but can Nintendo check if you are subscribed while you are offline?

I assume it would be similar to the PS+ games on Vita, it'll find out when your subscription expires when you connect to the internet, and keep track based on the internal clock. Though if it loses all power keeping the internal clock alive (that is, you literally remove the battery) it would likely revoke access until the date is set again via the internet. Again, going by what happens on Vita.

I'm not whether it's because my expectations with Nintendo's online are rock bottom, but I'm pleasantly surprised

That is a bit sophisticated. I have a bad feeling Nintendo is just going to make you be online at all times you want to play these games. Like their mobile games.

Always online requirement for a portable console without 4g makes no sense, and even Nintendo can't be that dumb.

That's not how PS+ games work, you download them and play them on your console, when you no longer have the subscription you can't open them.

There's no chance of that happening with a portable device that connects through wifi. If Nintendo ever did always online for their entire console then I would see pigs flying.

You need to use a smartphone for voice chat. Nintendo can be that dumb.

Just give me the normal Virtual Console quick.
This is pretty much where I'm at too. A "Netflix style" solution for some NES games is neat but I want the ability to buy VC games soon and at minimum with the platform support of the Wii U. Give me GBA vc on my Switch already.

It is? I mean, maybe once they clarify how the classic games are being handled sure. But paying for such a half assed matchmaking/party/voice chat system seems crazy to me.
I don't think any ones talking about the online when referring to it being a bargin more the Netflix style online new games.

Great news! A small selection of free games for a cheap price. And presumably vc still exists so I can buy anything else I want :)

I was dreading a huge netflix like service, because I like owning my download games, and I also like to complete my games :p

Even then, $20 a year for access to some NES games? Until we know how big the selection is going to be that still seems pretty hard a sell to me. Its definitely a better solution than the original one they announced though.

Nah, it's a legitimately pretty good offering for $20/year.

20 bucks is perfect

$20 per year is a bargain for this.

Outside of the classic games service, we know very little about how the service is going to function to actually argue that $20 is a good value proposition right now. Maybe it will be a bargain. Maybe it won't. Until we get closer to the launch of the service and we start hearing some reports about its infrastructure, the features of the smartphone app, how it handles basic features that other systems have had for well over a decade, I'm not inclined to say it's worth paying for at any price.

In for that price. Will save me $40 a year (because I ain't keeping PSN, hopefully some competition will make them get off their lazy asses).

It's $20. That's nothing. Let's be reasonable here.

Glad to see people have reasonable and sane expectations in here. /s

Well, Vita did it in 2011. Free online play, party chat. It's also the case on Steam.
Heck, 3DS and Wii U had free online play and an online service on par with the Switch one. It was free. Tell me where this is unreasonable and insane ?

I'm not asking them to rent NES titles for free of course.

Great price. I honestly don't care for igc on psplus so i would love a 20$ subscription just to play online with my ps4 too...

Man, when Kimishima first said it'll cost around 25-30$ I felt it was too good to be true.
20$/year is an amazing deal.
You are going to pay to do what you could do for free before. And get to play 3 NES roms.

Amazing deal ?

Not sure how this is an amazing deal. They've got the basics for the classic games library right, now it'll depend on the execution and offering. With what they have at launch, that's not nearly enough to get me to spend any money. NES rom dumps do not excite me in 2017, online play or not.

Maybe 20€ for a year is such a small amount for some that people can just pay it without a second thought, but that doesn't make this an amazing deal.

Had his dog run over by Blizzard's CEO
Nintendo getting people to pay $20 a year for a bunch of shit most wouldn't be interested in at all, lol.

The price is okay but I really couldn't care less about some NES games, although this is a huge improvement over the "pick a NES game per month" situation obviously.

I just don't get why they are taking FOREVER with the VC this time round. The only reason I still have my WiiU is that I want to know what's with my digital games on there. I was at least hoping to carry over Mother 1 and 2 ;_;

20€ is probably the maximum they can charge given their online offerings and given that they are just handing out old NES games for free. Still surprising they delayed the launch until 2018 now.

So they're looking to charging a subscription fee to play VC games?

I think I figured out why they stopped production of NES mini.

Great move by Nintendo.

They show a really crappy online service.
Next step they make it a bit less shitty and they have people start saying how good it is compared to the original plan.

This is shit. Having to have a phon is shit. Giving a selection of nes games is shit.

Paying for this shit is terrible.

Uh Nintendo just made online free for longer because of complaints

I'm no expert but shouldn't the natural response be to keep complaining in hopes they they scrap trying to charge for online? Not just accept it and even praise Nintendo

Who cares if their online service is lacking basic features that even the last generation of consoles had or has locked them behind an app, making them unintuitive and non user friendly to use? We can get NES games with online!

I imagine Nintendo will start with tiered service levels.
Nes 20$ a year
Snes 25
N64 30
And so on.
No chance. Nintendo wants and needs to keep it simple it'll be $20 a year but they'll swap games in and out of the lineup and there won't be anything but NES games for a long time.

So since they've tweaked this in response to feedback, what're the chances they allow dedicated parties and voice chat system side instead of using the app.

Simple like the voice chat solution?

Nintendo have shown that they don't understand online except that they can now start charging for it.

They have made vc games trickle out. They have overcharged for ancient games.
They have always been a greedy company. And you don't think they could have tiers of service?

It fits their mo to a t.
