Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

Did people forget that the Scorpio is fpr enthusiasts? I would love for it to be $399, but reality states otherwise.
That isn't now Microsoft has been pushing it though. It very much feels like their focused platform and their future. It's why the price is surprising.

You cannot use straight price inflation to argue the would be cost of technology where barring a production problem almost always trends downward and cost:performance is continually lowering on the cost end as performance rises, never mind various economic issues that come with a company targeting their product. Scorpio's APU, while fairly large at 14nm is slightly smaller than the XBO's at 28nm while less complex due to no longer requiring the eSRAM that was responsible for it being bigger than the PS4's. MS has basically taken then freed up space coupled with the die shrink to give Scorpio's GPU greater horsepower. It probably isn't costing MS more than the XBO's APU did.

As for everything else, it's pretty much a natural progression from the PS4 in 2013 or even the Pro in 2016 which Sony half-assed to an extent.

I just did

Deal with it

A dollars value is always decreasing that means the cost of goods, regardless of goods, are increasing no matter what. Inflation is a real thing.

When Xbox came out the minimum wage here was $6.85... it's going up to $15 soon.

It's not magic, it's macroeconomics

He doesn't seem to be the kind of person to spoil something from Microsoft's conference, the price of Scorpio for that matter, that was roughly 6 hours away from being revealed, just to be able to say he called it first. It seems like he was asked to do it either as a clever ploy to create hype when MS sells it for 399 or to break the bad news softly before the actual conference since MS has already seen people complaining about being Scorpio being priced too high. Either way, I think it was rehearsed.

How about Option C: He or one of his sources heard this from the rehearsal and he decided to report it?

If this is indeed a bait and switch "leak", then Keighley has been hanging around Kojima way too much.

And he would have played us like a fiddle.

The problem is we're not talking about a next-gen console at the start of it's life-cycle coming after the most successful home console ever. We're talking about an expensive mid-gen revision that's expected to sell at a time where the base Xbox One has stagnated.

The worry is that this is more Sega CD than PS3.
Nobody saying it is a smart move. But it really depends on what Microsoft wants. If they see this as a console for the gamer crowd that want to latest and greatest, they might bet on them buying it anyway, while the rest goes for an Xbox One S. To then drop Scorpio in price later on.

We'll need to see what their focus will be during the press conference in a bit.

He could be right and wrong at the same time.

The S launched with an early version for $100 more. Scorpio could do the same thing, so a +1TB version could be 499, and regular SKU could be 399 a month later.

He could have a bad source, it could be a misinformation leak to expose the internal leak as well as surprise people with the actual price. Or he could be right and the price is in line with all the expectations from DF and other press and "concerned" people will show up en masse to decry how terrible and unexpected the price is.

Given the only thing to go on is his credibility, I'm not buying into his prediction, but I'm not writing him off as being malevolent or anything either. I'm sure he thinks he is sure, but at the same time as someone who has their own show and doesn't like leaks, its very unprofessional of him to be publicly speculating like this hours before the reveal.

Personally I think it's a great deal at either price, in Day 1 with a new 4k set this fall either way.

And what kills me is when ppl say..who is it even aimed at???

Its aimed at ppl like you. As in: those that would buy it at $499.

I'm not budging on 399 for PS Pro. But I may have for this.

MS could release it at $499 and it would make sense. They could at $399 and it would still make sense.

Depends on what their goals are...

RAM prices haven't actually gone done in recent times. Plus they need that vapor cooling solution that I have to imagine is more than cheap heatsink + fan.

APU itself shouldn't be radically more expensive.

Or it's also possible that he got it from someone other than MS which made him not have issue with spilling the beans on it since someone else got loose mouthed.

Edit: Beaten lol

But they have been pushing it like that. Spencer has said from the jump it's for enthusiasts especially in regards to the tech.

He did a whole interview in regards to the pricing and made it a point to say this thing is for enthusiasts and to expect a price that matches that.

Gens are over. You have to adjust your thinking accordingly.

I'm betting not only was the Geoff tweet a planned 'leak', but Microsoft will actually make reference to it. Like "Scorpio will launch at $449. I bet that's a bit lower than you were expecting, huh?"

Kojima and Keighley are actually two people that share a single body. They're like those siblings from Legion. That's why Kojima still looks so young. Geoff is the one who spends the most time on the outside.

I think most of us are confident at this point that this is a bait and switch leak. The pricing is way off and it would make the console DOA.

It's the most logical reaction, to be honest. I can't believe how many people prefer being lied to in the face than admitting Microsoft could sell this machine for a higher price than they anticipated.

Us gamers, am I right!?

Yeah, either way, can't expect anything else.

Right, but if they're doing it at a private event and someone overhears and leaks, then that's letting the leaker tie their own noose.

You can't accuse Microsoft of being purposefully deceitful if that is the case. The lesson is "don't leak stuff".

Yeah, but going back to what I stated, why even bother putting a price on display, real or not? It's their most important bullet point tonight. They don't need it during rehearsal. LOL That's my point.

On top of that, it is incredibly naive to think it won't somehow leak, if they don't want it to. Which is why I can't trust it's some earnest rehearsal.

It's the centerpiece of their entire conference and was a huge part of it last year. This is the thing for them. I don't find it similar to how Sony has handled the Pro at all.

I am a bit curious as to why Geoff would leak this though. I mean he's been behind the scenes on the production side on so much stuff over the years that it's really strange he would just up and say "fuck it" and start leaking stuff from rehearsal.

I'm not sure I buy into the whole thing that it's one big marketing stunt but I definitely think it's odd that Geoff is leaking this now.

Why would Geoff fake leak the price on purpose?
What would he gain from this?

He wouldn't but companies such as Universal and Disney give their employees false information to route out leaks on purpose on a regular basis. Imagine if a cameraman during the rehearsals who has signed out a NDA then Microsoft can pinpoint it to someone on the Galen center.

If the crow is served I want to not be left out:

I don't think Scorpio is $499, I think it's $399. Also EA's conference sucked arse.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
I think that would be a reasonable price given the tech included. What will truly suck is the Canadian price - but that's not Microsoft's fault.
