Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

journalists leak things when they get information. it's like a pillar of journalism

You don't just walk into a rehearsal.... and then start posting stuff seen in a rehearsal... don't believe it for a minute.

It's either two SKU's (different hd sizes etc) and the top SKU is $499 and bottom is $399... its got to be a marketing ploy, straight out of the Sony handbook when the PS4 was launched. They've just left it longer to do the ploy.

I'm sure the people impressed with the specs will have no problem paying this.

It's the people who wanted this to be the resurgence of Xbox to combat Sony that are disappointed.

I think its more that than anything going on in this thread.

Not really the price of the console itself...but the price to battle for....

.........CONSOLE WARS..........

He could be right and wrong at the same time.

The S launched with an early version for $100 more. Scorpio could do the same thing, so a +1TB version could be 499, and regular SKU could be 399 a month later.

He could have a bad source, it could be a misinformation leak to expose the internal leak as well as surprise people with the actual price. Or he could be right and the price is in line with all the expectations from DF and other press and "concerned" people will show up en masse to decry how terrible and unexpected the price is.

Given the only thing to go on is his credibility, I'm not buying into his prediction, but I'm not writing him off as being malevolent or anything either. I'm sure he thinks he is sure, but at the same time as someone who has their own show and doesn't like leaks, its very unprofessional of him to be publicly speculating like this hours before the reveal.

Personally I think it's a great deal at either price, in Day 1 with a new 4k set this fall either way.
He heard him saying starting at 499 though.

Damn Geoff's credibility is fucked if he ended up overhearing a fake $499 Price during rehearsal and then ran to his twitter to break the "news".

I feel sorry for him if it turns out to be $399 instead. He'd have no one to blame but himself.

If this was some kind of PR stunt he'd have no credibility ever again. He's not exactly Mr. Credible in the first place but I have to assume he's smarter than that

Agreed. It is getting funny that even game developers think he is getting played by a PR stunt.

Do they really think that. Devs wouldn't be any more in the know than we are regarding this.

It's also not hard to come to that conclusion. It's either true, not true, a controlled leak, or bad info.

Look a little deeper at those two examples if you think it will do "fine". Both PS3 and XboxOne struggled mightily at those price points.
(Cough) $249 XB1 S Still exists you know and would still outsell even at a $399 price point.

The idea that Scorpio would significantly affect Xbox's market share simply does not hold up. Scorpio is a prestige product meant to regain the enthusiast market Microsoft threw away with the underpowered XB1. With it Microsoft will no longer have to cringe at the mention of Digital Foundary. Scorpio also helps sales of the XB1 S in that people who can't afford Scorpio can still enter the ecosystem at a much lower price point, then upgrade to Scorpio later instantly getting better versions of their games. The $100 more does not negate either of those two points.

Or it is $499 only SKU.

PS3 was a disaster at 599, and in a nearly 8 year long life cycle it took several years of work, price cuts and good software to recover.

And in the end, they still ceded a shit load of marketshare to Microsoft.
Yes. And if 499 ends up begin too high, Microsoft can also cut it if they want to. It isn't necessarily sending a console to death, it just makes it more difficult to sell.

If it's $499, anger at the price.

If it's $399, anger at the tactics.

*Kissing of teeth*

It's the most logical reaction, to be honest. I can't believe how many people prefer being lied to in the face than admitting Microsoft could sell this machine for a higher price than they anticipated.

Us gamers, am I right!?

Maybe multiple skus?

I dunno. Those don't usually help all that much unless one gets something into "impulse buy" territory, also because the companies usually make less of that model to get people to buy the more expensive one. Nobody really remembers the $499 PS3 sku for example.

What other dev thinks he's getting played? Luke Smith was pretty clearly just speculating.

Tom Warren from The Verge says the BOM isn't that high so he's surprised about the leaked price too.

Man I would gladly use leeh's crying salty MS fan avatar if it's 499.

All I'll say is this. I know their conference is very soon so all will be revealed.

But they could easily send out a tweet saying it's not true.

nekkid

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Proving what point? It is unrealistic to assume that the public wouldn't jump on a leaked figure, whatever it was, and they know it.

Right, but if they're doing it at a private event and someone overhears and leaks, then that's letting the leaker tie their own noose.

You can't accuse Microsoft of being purposefully deceitful if that is the case. The lesson is "don't leak stuff".

That is alot for a slighty more beefed up Xbox. They will have to blow me away with the reason to buy. I dont have a 4K TV so any extra power doesnt help me unless they make the games 1080p/60 for all of them.

He doesn't seem to be the kind of person to spoil something from Microsoft's conference, the price of Scorpio for that matter, that was roughly 6 hours away from being revealed, just to be able to say he called it first. It seems like he was asked to do it either as a clever ploy to create hype when MS sells it for 399 or to break the bad news softly before the actual conference since MS has already seen people complaining about being Scorpio being priced too high. Either way, I think it was rehearsed.

On one hand. I want to think this is all some elaborate marketing stunt so we are all stunned when it's announced at $400.

That said. This is way too high imo.

I think it is a marketing. Microsoft has been poised to impress everybody for a while now.

Edit: honestly I am ready to buy when they announce it cheaper than this 'leak'.

Or he heard it from someone at the rehearsal. Did he confirm he was even there?

The problem is we're not talking about a next-gen console at the start of it's life-cycle coming after the most successful home console ever. We're talking about an expensive mid-gen revision that's expected to sell at a time where the base Xbox One has stagnated. The worry is that this is more Sega CD than PS3.

You cannot use straight price inflation to argue the would be cost of technology where barring a production problem almost always trends downward and cost:performance is continually lowering on the cost end as performance rises, never mind various economic issues that come with a company targeting their product. Scorpio's APU, while fairly large at 14nm is slightly smaller than the XBO's at 28nm while less complex due to no longer requiring the eSRAM that was responsible for it being bigger than the PS4's. MS has basically taken then freed up space coupled with the die shrink to give Scorpio's GPU greater horsepower. It probably isn't costing MS more than the XBO's APU did.

As for everything else, it's pretty much a natural progression from the PS4 in 2013 or even the Pro in 2016 which Sony half-assed to an extent. MS wants to sell this and they want to sell a lot of them and at $500.
