Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

What happened to the link found in the teaser trailer or whatever that had the "Build this robot for less than $400!"

Was that fake?

If it's $499, then it's probably going to £399 in the UK, which is over double the price of an Xbox One S Fifa bundle.

PS4 Pro is currently £339 in retail. So I think any more than £399 would be ridiculous.

Lmao

Or it is $499 only SKU.

Yes it could be, I don't have any feeling on the price, it'll be between 399 and 499, but thats not what I have a concern about.

I'm more than feeling that price is dubious because it was heard in a rehearsal. Those things have tight security, and I don't believe for one minute that Keighly would overhear something in a rehearsal and post it. Firstly because you don't just turn up to a rehearsal (you have to be invited) and secondly theres an element of trust/NDA for people who are there (usually unless its like a security guard who wants to lose his job). Someone in his position who needs game companies/developers to support his awards/shows/interviews, and he leaks from a rehearsal... nah don't believe it.

It's the centerpiece of their entire conference and was a huge part of it last year. This is the thing for them. I don't find it similar to how Sony has handled the Pro at all.

Exactly. Sony pushed Pro out on the quiet in comparison. This is big for MS.

It doesn't matter how it's handled. They said it's an enthusiast device. The One S will be the cheaper option and will continue to sell the most by a large margin.

Why would the mass consumer base go out and buy a $400-$500 console when the cheaper options play the same games?

I think it's all sorts of weird for the Chef Designer of Destiny to get into this conversation in the first place.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Of course he knows the specs by know but the price is a whole different matter. The only ones I can imagine knowing it at Activision are the publishing team, not Bungie themselves.

PS3 was a disaster at 599, and in a nearly 8 year long life cycle it took several years of work, price cuts and good software to recover.

And in the end, they still ceded a shit load of marketshare to Microsoft.

The power of PS3 over 360 is not like the power of xbone to Scorpio

That isn't now Microsoft has been pushing it though. It very much feels like their focused platform and their future. It's why the price is surprising.

That's always been their push. The messaging for Scorpio was it was for enthusiasts with Spencer being coy of the pricing range from the start.

For how powerful this console is that price point makes sense but at the same time you would think Microsoft would come out and put it at a lower price point to stay competitive with the PS4 Pro.

Do they really think that. Devs wouldn't be any more in the know than we are regarding this.

It's also not hard to come to that conclusion. It's either true, not true, a controlled leak, or bad info.
It can be what Luke is speculating it to be, without the specific intent of making Geoff look foolish. He's just the first person that ran to Twitter about it. It would just come off as looking very odd because

A. Many, many people who care enough to pay attention to this stuff have been predicting such a maneuver for over a month

B. People who don't care about E3 aren't going to know what was rumor or reality before they see signs at Best Buy and GameStop anyway.

I don't think anybody is suggesting that MS is deliberating playing Geoff here, just that maybe the tendency to want to break news on Twitter resulted in it happening anyway.

Are devs not allowed be normal humans and speculate on rumours?

PS3 was much more powerful then 360 when he wanted to.

Like you cant even see anything remotely to Last of Us,God Of War 3,Beyond,Uncharted 2-3 on X360. Gears 3 is still best looking game on that machine looks worse then those games.

he isnt a regular employee. He is one of the biggest face of gaming media.

That aint no regular joe leaking shit.

If during rehearsals a cameraman who saw $499 on screen then DM'd Geoff. Then Microsoft knew it was someone in Galen center that leaked the price to Geoff and the production company could be in trouble.

I'm not on about the person who posted in the info(Geoff) I'm on about the person who reached out to him(i.e. a cameraman).

Yeah again, an enthusiast product isn't the centerpiece of your entire division like it clearly has been portrayed. You don't hype up the reveal and everything regarding it if you actually viewed it as your Pro equivalent.

Mine is pretty and pink
To be real though, the price fits what the components are gonna be outputting for power (Well aside form the CPU that will probably bottleneck everything). Not that I feel like I have any reason to buy it as someone with a pc.

It's a good breakdown of MS strategy and thinking behind the product. I've pretty much always thought it was a $499 device.

That doesn't however have any bearing on if the system will actually be successful even within the niche MS are designing it for

Absolutely. This kind of technical competition is also a great thing. I can't understand why anyone would think that a console this powerful, moreso than the PS4 Pro, will be just as much (and not even a bit more than) the Pro. My crow feasting knife and fork are ready though if it is 399 but I am not convinced of that.

Called it. Expected so it's not shocking to me. If the games they show off perform and look like what I'm guessing they'll look like, the $500 will be justified IMHO.

This is what I'm expecting gameplay to look like. Yes-that good at 60fps. Cut scene, cgi quality gameplay. 4k at 60fps standard.

I'm pretty sure they'll hit this or surpass it. :)

So if you're Microsoft and are coming in at $500, do you announce that price at the end or the beginning lol.

Definitely the end. You show all the great things about Scorpio to get everybody invested then hit them for the price. Worked for the Switch anyway.

Refuse to believe that they would be this foolish. I know it's packing power relative to their competitors but $500 is too much.

This. Only the fanboys got it in their heads that this was MS's new wonder weapon for stealing Sony's thunder and capturing some market share. MS has always been upfront with the premium, enthusiast aspect.

Microsoft is revealing the price in less than 3 hours at this point, there's no reason to lie if the truth is gonna be revealed immediately after

A paycheck is a good reason. MS wants 399 mikedrop moment. And the only way it could work is if people are expecting 499. I would love to be proven wrong. Means I'll probably get Scorpio if it's 399.

Otherwise none of this shit makes ANY sense.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
I can now say with confidence Project Scorpio is $499. Unless something changes today, that is what will be announced.

Those calling into question he integrity, credibility.....is this used with invisible ink, typeface on other folks monitors, phones, ect?

Console wars sure messes with some folks common sense...

If its a ploy, so what? Now that I think about it they have been so good on containing leaks this year up until this.

Whats the point of showing the price and stuff during rehearsals? Wouldent it be better if during that spot they had a place holder?

We are heading into tin foil territory here with setting up fake prices to flush out a leak at a production company which is impossible to proof anyway.

Of course. I just don't see such speculation being based on insider knowledge as some here think. It is weird that such a high-ranking member of Bungie would get in on this though, especially with speculation on Geoff's role in things.
