Where did the 2 million worldwide even come from.
Why would Capcom spend probably 2x or more to sell 1/2 as much.

Its a misconception from their previous report where they have 2 mil on their other titles, but MHW has never had an actual number provided.

If they remade all assets I expect very little monsters/weapons variety compared to the portables games (same thing happened with Tri). That could annoy original fans.

MH Tri reached over 1 mil in the end but iirc it was through extreme price drops. I think that's the ceiling for a console MH.

That was at the height of the franchise as well on a much more popular system.

Maybe its Capcom's test game for the MH series on PS4. If it sells well that next one will be an on-rails shooter.

That's how these things work right.

And as I type this I realize I would totally play a MH on-rails shooter in the vain of Panzer Dragoon.

But was it a more popular system with Monster Hunter fans? At that time the series was popular on the PSP and Tri Wii never got close to those numbers. Sure it sold more than the PS2 installments but those were made before the series exploded. Would it have sold more than 1 million on the PS3? It's possible. Hard to say with any certainty either way.

Also another complain i had with MH:W right now....... the colour feels much dull compared to normal MH series and that uninspired T-Rex....Wtf. It feels like some MH copy monsters lol.

And where the hell is the flagship monster. Capcom is sooo gonna Capcom this title i feel.

It doesn't look like a spin off at all. PR says it's the next game in the franchise. I guess they didn't want to name it MH5 in order to not confuse first comers to the franchise. This is basically MH5 in all except the name.

Also, seriously people believe this will not be released in Japan?

Yeah after all those outsourced fears, the real surprise is that the main MH team is behind it.

Capcom will nigh assuredly have a 2+ million shipment expectation for the game. I'm not sure it'd even be worth listing in their fiscal presentation if they don't.

I meant that era in general. Starting with MH Tri and going through the Portable 3rd games. It had the best console performance and the best handheld performance.

Its the next mainline game. 2 million first week should be the minimum expectation.

If it is indeed the next mainline game, with a AAA budget, I agree it would need those numbers to not be seen as a mistake. HM has legs, that is a historical fact, but if this game opens at something like 800k it isn't going to crawl to 4.5 million. At 2 million FW it might.

Oh talking WW by the way. 2 million FW Japan alone is crazy talk.

People are in denial about them dropping Nintendo/Switch.

They haven't dropped Nintendo/Switch; they just announced a Monster Hunter game for it a few weeks ago.

As a matter of fact this announcement strengthens the rumor that the mainline MH will be on Switch.

It's too different to be called MH5. I doubt they ever considered calling it MH5.

I said this yesterday but it seems its relevant tonight too, the revenue from a 60$ sale is not the same as the usual 39.99$ one from previous games.

Units vs units is not the only factor.

MH5 is probably being worked on by Ichinose and the Generations troop. And it will be on Switch, exclusively or not.

And the cost to develop and advertise a 3DS is not the same either, when compared to PS4.

Also, the goal is to reach more players. So yes, they have to sell more copies.

World is the mainline MH.

I'm not sure if it strengthens it. But not calling it MH5 in Japan is a sign that they are keeping their options open.

In the West I understand it could be better to drop the number, to bring in new people and not intimidate them.

But in Japan they already have millions of people on board. If they called it MH5 in Japan it would be a huge show of confidence. But they didn't.

I think sales will determine if this is a "mothership title" Tales style.

Oh boy so now we have to deal with Oregano's delusions until MHW launches and/or MH5 is announced.

Fun times.

World is the mainline MH.

It's a spin-off. Just as X is. They would otherwise have named if Monster Hunter 5. Logically the main team doesn't automatically make it a mainline installment.

With that out of the way I wonder when the next mainline installment will be announced. TGS?

It's already announced. It's called MH World. Logically, not having a number, doesn't automatically make it a spin off.

Maybe you are asking about the next numbered game instead? Surely after MH World launches.

A game doesn't have to be numbered to be mainline. I assume the main team being behind this is what leads to much of MH World being considered mainline.

Suffice it to say, I'm very curious to see what Capcom's sales expectations for World are. I guess they'll release a projection alongside their Q1 results in a month or so?

People are in denial about them dropping Nintendo/Switch.

You're really trying to ruffle feathers with this. There literally is not any melt downs going on.

Anyway, if it's the main MH team the title is mainline. It doesn't matter if they call it 5 or not. It begs the question though, what is the future of the franchise gonna look like on Switch. Will they leave out all the gameplay improvements they make in World? As a fan of the series I would rather they just pick a path and stick with it instead of completely segmenting the base across platforms.

Some of the comments certainly seem predictably knee jerk. Tbh, I think them keeping with the mainline team, meant the graphics aren't as spectacular, or perhaps the RE engine (?) is the reason.

I'm surprised the graphics aren't better too

Did they confirm this?

Its by the team that made all the mainline games.

They didn't name it MH5 so as to not alienate a new, western audience.

3 months right?

I have a feeling Capcom was internally torn about to what extent to brand and market this as a mainline MH.

I don't think its hard. Why would you call a very differently scoped MH game, especially one you wish to attract new fans to MH5?
